Oklahoma basketball lands North Texas transfer guard Umoja ‘Mo’ Gibson

The transfer portals takes and the transfer portal gives.

Not even a week after starting guard Jamal Bieniemy shockingly hit the transfer portal, Oklahoma has filled his void.

North Texas guard Umoja “Mo” Gibson hit the transfer portal on April 3. The Sooners clearly moved quick, gaining his commitment on Monday morning.

“The talk I had with Coach (Lon) Kruger, he told me I fit the system perfectly and that I could come in and contribute right away, I had long talks and consideration with all that he said and it all made sense. I just went with the move and chose Oklahoma,” Gibson told Rivals.com. “The up-tempo system that plays fast and multiple people bring up the ball. He talked about my abilities to shoot it and get down hill but also to get others involved.”

The Waco, Texas, native spent three seasons in Denton, Texas. Gibson suffered a season-ending injury in 2017-18 before starting in 23 games as a redshirt freshman and made appearances in all 33 games. His bio from the 2018-19 season was littered with big numbers:

  • Played the second-most minutes (956)
  • Named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team
  • Made a UNT and Conference USA Freshman record 99 three-pointers
  • His 99 three-pointers were the second-most in a single-season in program history
  • Led the Mean Green in scoring with 12.6 points per game (415)
  • Had the team’s best free throw percentage at 80 percent (56-70)
  • Was second on the team in assists (63) and steals (46)

Gibson didn’t stop in his final season for North Texas. He shot a blistering 39.4 percent from three on seven attempts a game. Gibson started in all 31 games, scoring 14.5 points per game, making a team-high in 3-pointers (86) while playing a team high in minutes.

Oklahoma’s newest guard slides into a deep backcourt with De’Vion Harmon, Austin Reaves, Alondes Williams and Jalen Hill. With his shooting ability, Lon Kruger should have an easy time finding a role for Gibson whether it’s starting or in a sixth-man role.

The Sooners 2019-20 season was cut short before an NCAA Tournament appearance, but they are loading right back up for another run to the Big Dance in 2020-21.

After an exhilarating game against LSU in which the Aggies mounted a 19 point comeback, they now face the North Texas Mean Green.  Playing their final game in the tropical paradise of Jamaica, Utah State will look to keep their record perfect.

Alphonso Anderson has been a pleasant surprise for Utah State this season.  After a monstrous game against LSU, Anderson will seek to help his squad secure another victory.  The junior transfer from North Idaho College has been averaging 14 points and nearly 7 rebounds a game. Keep an eye out for another big game from Anderson.

Senior guard Diogo Brito has played an important role for Utah State this season.  He surprised the Aggie faithful with a nice dunk in the early minutes of the contest against LSU.  Brito has been consistently good throughout his time as an Aggie.  His consistent play, both on offense and defense, has been key to the 6-0 start this season.  We’ll see if he can continue the contribute off the bench.

Sam Merrill and Justin Bean played well against LSU.  Merrill netted 24 points and 8 assists while Bean added 14 points and 12 rebounds.  It was Bean’s play that ignited the ferocious rally in the second half of the previous game, and it was Merrill’s three-pointer that secured the victory.  Look for these two Aggies to continue their excellent play in their match against North Texas.

The Mean Green of North Texas have had a mediocre season up to this point.  Their overall record shows 2-4.  They are led by sophomore guard Umoja Gibson.  Gibson is averaging nearly 13 points a game.  The highlight of the Mean Green’s season came in a 3-point loss against #25 VCU.  Apart from this near win over a quality team, the Mean Green have been rather lackluster.

North Texas will need to summon their inner Mean Green fighting machine if they want to keep it close. If Utah State plays half the game they are capable of, this should be an easy victory.
