UNC baseball coach Scott Forbes suspended

The NCAA has suspended UNC baseball manager Scott Forbes for two games after he was ejected on Saturday.

The UNC baseball program has an uphill battle to climb in the Chapel Hill Regional if they want their season to continue.

After losing to VCU on Saturday night, the Tar Heels will now face Georgia in an elimination game on Sunday. The winner plays VCU again on Sunday night hoping to force a deciding game on Monday. Basically, UNC has to win three games in a row to advance.

But they will have to get their first two wins without manager [autotag]Scott Forbes[/autotag].

The manager was ejected after two controversial calls went against UNC’s way in the second and third innings. The latest got him ejected and now the NCAA is handing down a suspension.

Per UNC officials, Forbes has been suspended for two games by the NCAA following Saturday’s game.

In the second inning, UNC loaded the bases with one out before Johnny Castagnozzi grounded into a double play. Tomas Frick was called out for interference at second base after hitting his head on the infielder’s knee. That erased a run for UNC which would have tied the game.

Then in the third inning, Danny Serretti’s pop-up wasn’t caught by infielder Marcus O’Malley who slid on the infield. Both UNC runners froze and were thrown out at second and third base. Forbes was then ejected as he believed an infield fly should have been called. Instead, it was a double play that took a scoring chance off the board and ended the inning again.

The Diamond Heels and Bulldogs are set for first pitch at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.

Scott Forbes sounds the siren for Carolina Hurricanes

UNC Baseball manager Scott Forbes sounded the siren for the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

UNC baseball manager Scott Forbes had at least a day to soak everything all in and relax following the Diamond Heels win over NC State to capture the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. And before his team gets set for the Chapel Hill regional later this week, Forbes had some fun at the Carolina Hurricanes game.

Forbes was the honoree to sound the siren ahead of Game 7 between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night. Before each home game, the Hurricanes bring in guests to sound the siren and get things started as it’s become a tradition for the franchise.

Check out Forbes giving all his effort in this one:

Forbes isn’t the only UNC coach or player to sound the siren this year as Hubert Davis, and  Brady Manek have done it as well earlier this year.

While the Hurricanes lost Game 7 and saw their season end, it was a great experience for Forbes especially doing it in NC State’s home basketball arena.

The times, TV info and more have been released for the upcoming Chapel Hill Regional which begins on Friday.

After capturing the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, the Diamond Heels are now set to host a regional as the NCAA Tournament begins this week.

Vance Honeycutt named ACC Tournament MVP

UNC freshman outfielder Vance Honeycutt earned ACC Tournament MVP honors after Sunday’s win over NC State.

UNC baseball freshman [autotag]Vance Honeycutt[/autotag] is having a season to remember in Chapel Hill.

After a two home run game in Sunday’s Atlantic Coast Conference title game win over NC State, Honeycutt became the first player in program history to reach 20+ home runs and 20+ steals in a single season. And shortly after, he was rewarded for his play in the tournament.

Honeycutt was named the ACC Tournament MVP following the Tar Heels title run over the past four games, the league announced shortly after Sunday’s game.

The freshman outfielder went 6-15 with four home runs, 10 RBI, five runs, and four walks over the four games and was the best player on the field in all four of those UNC wins.

Honeycutt is having a fantastic season for the Tar Heels, opting to play in Chapel Hill after being selected in the 20th round of the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft by the San Francisco Giants.  He’s hit 21 home runs on the year.

He was also named First-Team All-ACC for the tournament.

Diamond Heels take down Wolfpack for ACC Championship

The Diamond Heels jumped all over NC State early on to claim the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference baseball title.

The UNC Baseball program just might have the hottest team in America right now and it’s coming at the right time.

On Sunday, North Carolina fell behind 1-0 to NC State in the top of the first inning in the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game. But after that, it was all Tar Heels as they beat NC State 9-5 to win the title.

Freshman [autotag]Vance Honeycutt[/autotag] continued his hot streak with two home runs on Sunday driving in five RBI’s in the win including a two-run shot in the first and then a three-run shot in the second. He became the first player in UNC history to have 20+ home runs and 20+ steals in a single season.

After falling behind 1-0, UNC jumped on NC State to grab a 5-1 lead and never looked back. The Tar Heels added some insurance runs later on and eventually held off a late Wolfpack rally.

The win was huge for the Diamond Heels as they have now won 15 of their last 17 games and will be hosting a regional next week.

Max Carlson got the win to improve to 3-2 on the year, working five innings allowing six hits and three runs. It was his second win of the ACC Tournament.

Honeycutt was also named MVP of the tournament following the game.

Vance Honeycutt makes history early in ACC Championship Game

UNC freshman Vance Honeycutt made history for the Diamond Heels in the ACC Championship Game.

The UNC baseball program is red hot right now, winning 14 of their last 16 games to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game on Sunday. During the game, freshman [autotag]Vance Honeycutt[/autotag] made some history early on.

Honeycutt hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give UNC a 2-1 lead and then followed it up with a three-run shot in the bottom of the second to extend the lead to 8-1. In the process, Honeycutt reached the 20+ home run and 20+ steals milestone, becoming the first freshman in NCAA history to do so in the BBCOR since 2011.

MLB.com and UNC writer Pat James pointed out the stat on Sunday:

Honeycutt has been fantastic in his first season with the Diamond Heels after being selected in the 20th round of the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants a year ago. And UNC is happy that he decided to head to Chapel Hill instead of the pros.

The Tar Heels are in line to host a regional this week in the postseason.

Eighth inning helps propel Diamond Heels past Notre Dame

The Diamond Heels run continues as they take down Notre Dame to advance to the Atlantic Coastal Conference Championship.

The No. 8 UNC baseball program used a three-run eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie and eventually beat No. 8 Notre Dame 7-2 on Saturday, punching their tickets to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game on Sunday.

The Tar Heels bats cooled off a bit early after back-to-back blow out performances in the first two games of the tournament. UNC did match the Irish fight with solid fielding as both teams struggled to find their swing with a sluggish start.

UNC got on the board first in the top of the second inning with Mikey Madej reaching home plate off a fielder choice. Notre Dame tied it up in the third with Jack Branning blasting a 419-foot home run to left field.

In the fifth inning, Notre Dame’s Carter Putz hit a homer of his own to give Notre Dame the 2-1 lead. But UNC responded quickly.

In the sixth inning, the Tar Heels got an RBI double from [autotag]Hunter Stokely[/autotag] that brought Madej home to even up the score. After a shutout inning in the seventh for both teams, UNC used the eighth inning to punch their ticket.

The Tar Heels got three runs in the eighth, all with two outs, to grab the lead 5-2. Mac Horvath had the go-ahead RBI with a single and then Danny Serretti hit a two-run double toadd to the lead.

They then pitched a scoreless bottom half before adding two more insurance runs in the ninth when [autotag]Johnny Castagnozzi[/autotag] got a two-RBI single to drop, giving the UNC a 7-2 lead.

UNC will take on the winner of No.10 NC State vs. No.11 Pitt in the ACC Championship game. The Diamond Heels beat NC State in a series earlier this month 2-1 and swept the series against Pitt in early March.

Diamond Heels take down Clemson in ACC Tournament

The Diamond Heels take care of business early beating the Clemson Tigers 9-2 to advance in the Atlantic Coastal Conference.

The No. 8 UNC baseball program opened up their Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament with a win over No. 12 Clemson in Pool A.

UNC got on the board early after a quick three and out in the top of the first inning with Angel Zarate scoring off a Danny Serretti single. Clemson got on the board in the second inning to tie things up after a Bryar Hawkins RBI but thankfully for the Diamond Heels, that would be the only run given up after leaving two on base.

Zarate scored again in the bottom of the second after Mac Horvath sent Clemson to the warning tracks for a double RBI. After holding Clemson to zero in the top of the third, Mikey Madej blasted the ball over the wall for a home run, giving UNC their only runs in the third inning and giving them a 4-1 lead.

The fourth inning was a walk party for the UNC baseball team as back-to-back walks gave the Tar Heels another score, pushing their lead to 5-1.

Vance Honeycutt kept the inning going with a two-RBI off a single to push the Diamond Heels lead to 7-1. In the fifth inning, Zarate had his third hit of the game, this time for his 32nd RBI of the season to give UNC the 8-1 lead.

The Tar Heels tacked on one more run in the eighth inning, while Clemson score one in the ninth, giving UNC the 9-2 victory.

The Diamond Heels’ impressive victory gives them a 11-2 record in May, setting them up for a showdown against top-seeded Virginia Tech. The two teams are set to meet Friday at 7 p.m with the winner likely advancing in the tournament.
