Rutgers basketball is among three schools Joey Hart is considering

Joey Hart has Rutgers basketball in the mix with a decision coming up.

One of the top uncommitted players in the class of 2023, Indiana guard Joey Hart has Rutgers basketball in the mix with a decision possibly coming soon.

In mid-May, Hart was granted his release from Central Florida, allowing now for the talented shooter a second chance at his recruitment. He scored over 1,900 points in his four seasons of high school basketball.

Hart is a three-star recruit and a 6-foot-5 shooting guard from Linton-Stockton High School (Linton, IN).

According to the Indianapolis Star, Rutgers is in the mix along with Indiana and Kentucky to land Hart. He is expected to visit Kentucky this weekend.

“I’m definitely interested in IU and I think they are interested in me as well,” Hart told the Indianapolis Star. “We’ll see where we’re at after (the Kentucky visit) … they said they would get back to me after my trip to Kentucky.”

Hart is a dynamic scorer, who has a good outside game but can dribble, drive and create his own shot. He gets to the rim very effectively and almost effortlessly.

He could also step into the Rutgers backcourt and challenge for minutes almost immediately. Cam Spencer left the program this offseason to enter the transfer portal, creating an opening for a scorer. Hart is a far more versatile scorer than Spencer, with the class of 2023 recruit able to create his own shot off the dribble as well as slash to the basket.

Potentially, Hart would fit in well alongside Derek Simpson, who showed down the stretch last year as a true freshman that he has the ability to run the Rutgers offense. Hart’s game could also blend well with UMass transfer Noah Fernandes, who has a good 3-point shot.

Watch: New Rutgers basketball guard Noah Fernandes has a history of being clutch

Rutgers basketball landed a guard who has ice water in his veins.

The addition of Noah Fernandes this week gives Rutgers basketball a point guard who can distribute and shoot from distance. He also is a player who can hit some pretty big shots.

And Rutgers is no stranger to big shots, with Ron Harper Jr. two years ago providing dramatic game-winners against Purdue and at Indiana. Then there was Cam Spencer, who himself hit multiple late-game shots this past year for Rutgers.

Two years ago, it was Fernandes who had his own game-winning shot against Rutgers, providing a vivid moment against his future teammates. But it wasn’t the only time over the past two seasons that Fernandes was clutch for UMass:

This is a legitimate, high-end pick-up for Rutgers as Fernandes does a lot of things Rutgers needs. Not only does he run the court well and play strong defense, but he has the ability to stretch opposing defenses with his outside shooting ability.

Last season, Fernandes averaged 13.4 points per game last season. He posted a career-high 48.0 field goal percentage last season.

Rutgers basketball lands transfer point guard Noah Fernandes

Rutgers basketball lands transfer Noah Fernandes from the portal.

The first big piece of incoming news for Rutgers basketball this offseason landed on Thursday with the commitment of Noah Fernandes. The point guard commits to Rutgers out of the transfer portal having spent the last three years at UMass.

There is a belief within the program that Fernandes can fit on the floor at the same time with Derek Simpson and Paul Mulcahy (were he to return), giving Rutgers three dynamic players with the ball in their hands. But Fernandes clearly steps into a role with Rutgers where he will see starting minutes, giving the Scarlet Knights a solid ball distributor who has the ability to score.

Last season, he scored 13.4 points per game while shooting 48.0 percent from the field.

For Rutgers, the fit is clear as Fernandes gives the Scarlet Knights a reliable point guard who can score. For a team that struggled shooting the ball last year, the addition of the 5-foot-11 guard should help matters on the offensive end of the court.

His field goal percentage (48.0 percent) as well as his 3-point shooting percentage (43.5 percent) were all career highs.

Transfer portal: Five things to know about talented point guard Noah Fernandes before Rutgers basketball visit

UMass point guard Noah Fernandes is set to visit Rutgers basketball this weekend.

Rutgers basketball will be hosting Noah Fernandes this week for an official visit as they recruit one of the top point guards in the transfer portal.

A complete point guard who can score, distribute and play defense, Fernandes showed last season for UMass that he has all the tools to step in and be a starter for the Big Ten program. Adding Fernandes would help complete the Scarlet Knights starting five, giving them some versatility to run different looks offensively.

An accomplished scorer, Fernandes averaged 13.4 points per game last season. He posted a career-high 48.0 field goal percentage last season.

Rutgers has made the postseason each of the last three years and has four straight winning seasons in the ultra-tight Big Ten. He is a big potential piece for Rutgers as they return a strong projected lineup next season.

The visit from Fernandes is a big piece of news for the Scarlet Knights as they look to retool this offseason.
