One Kansas City Chiefs player has a new jersey number after 53-man roster cuts.
One of the quirks of the offseason roster is that two players, one on offense and one on defense, can share a common jersey number. The problem is that should both players wearing the same jersey number make the 53-man roster, one of those players will be forced to switch.
That was the case for two players who made the team’s most recent 53-man roster, QB Shane Buechele and S Bryan Cook, who both wore the No. 6. Buechele opted to change his number, leaving the rookie Cook with the No. 6 jersey.
Buechele previously wore No. 7 at the University of Texas and at SMU when he played college football. He also wore No. 7 when he played high school football at Arlington Lamar High School, but that number currently belongs to Chiefs K Harrison Butker.
So what number did Buechele go with? He went with No. 12 according to the Chiefs’ online media guide. The No. 12 jersey was most recently worn by WR Josh Gordon, who was released in the team’s final roster cuts. Before that, it belonged to WR Gehrig Dieter. As far as QBs are concerned, the best to wear the number in Kansas City was Rich Gannon.
