Nintendo Direct 2024: 5 Winners and Losers (oh my gosh, Metroid Prime 4!)

Here are the biggest winners and losers from the latest Nintendo Direct, which featured an awesome look at Metroid Prime 4.

Summer is traditionally the dead part of the video game calendar.

It’s almost as if companies understand people are spending more time outside in warmer weather, so they don’t necessarily plan blockbuster releases to keep folks from soaking in some sunlight. Fortunately, for those of us waiting for the colder months, summer is also the time of year when game companies start diagramming their upcoming slates like Microsoft recently did for the Xbox.

It’s like going to the movies and enjoying every second of the 20 minutes of trailers but for video games!

On Tuesday, Nintendo showcased its latest Nintendo Direct, highlighting its plans for the rest of 2024 and the near future. And hoo boy, was it an absolute barnburner. I don’t care how cynical our world has become. If you love video games, Tuesday’s presentation definitely made you feel something.

Let’s take a look at the biggest winners and losers from the June 2024 Nintendo Direct. All featured images courtesy of Nintendo unless noted otherwise.

1. Winner: Anyone who has wanted to play as Zelda for years

In almost every entry of The Legend of Zelda franchise, you step into the boots of Link, the “link” between the player and the game world. You are almost always following the story beats of the “damsel in distress” trope to save Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil Ganondorf in some fashion. The games have remained fun and inventive even though they’ve left a lot of meat on the bone with other potential protagonists.

Nintendo is finally flipping this formula on its head.

Coming later this year is The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Without me saying anything else, I’m sure that sounds really cool and like a bog-standard mysterious Zelda game title. (What are the echoes? Whoa!)

The catch is that this top-down adventure puts you in Zelda’s shoes this time as she tries to rescue Link after he loses to Ganondorf in battle. Gasp! Perhaps more importantly, Zelda will not actually play like Link in swinging a sword or shooting arrows around. Instead, she’ll utilize a magical “Tri Rod,” an all-encompassing item that creates and copies different objects in the world.

The 2D-esque Zelda games have been somewhat due for a shake-up for a while. It certainly looks like Echoes of Wisdom will provide that creative opportunity. It’s coming later this fall in September.

2. Loser: People holding their breath for Hollow Knight: Silksong

Credit: Team Cherry

Admittedly, this isn’t only on Nintendo, as the next entry in the instant classic Metroidvania Hollow Knight series will be multiplatform. So, theoretically, any one of Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, or even developer Team Cherry has the keys to giving us a morsel of information that the highly-anticipated sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong is on the horizon.

Still, in a press event featuring several Nintendo heavyweights bringing their best, it would’ve been nice to finally get any inkling that Hornet’s solo adventure was still coming. I would’ve taken a smattering of screenshots, a 10-second teaser with no gameplay footage, anything!

I blame Team Cherry first and foremost, but c’mon, Nintendo, pull some strings here.

3. Winner: The most patient Metroid fans

It had been 17 years since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the last entry in Nintendo’s primary 3D series for its Metroid franchise. Seventeen very long years and two separate console generations since we had last seen Samus Aran’s colorful, dynamic first-person perspective on a strange alien planet.

Our long wait is mercifully over.

To cap this Nintendo Direct, the company revealed a comprehensive look at Metroid Prime 4: Beyond in a remarkable announcement trailer. While it’s still not coming until sometime in 2025 (grumble, grumble), at least we got this taste to stave us off until then.

4. Loser: Gamers who wanted a proper NEW entry to the 2D Donkey Kong franchise

Look, this is more of a personal gripe, as I consider myself one of the biggest fans of the Donkey Kong Country franchise. They are simultaneously some of the most challenging and vibrant games I’ve ever played. They perfectly capture that arcade feel with any one of the Kongs in your control.

So, with that being said, it’s been over a decade since the release of Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze …  a game that came out for the Wii U and was remastered for the Switch a few years ago. It has been over a decade since we last had some fresh new platforming worlds for DK and Co. to navigate.

Our reward? Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, another remaster of a great game, this time from the Wii, but it’s nothing new or inherently fresh. Don’t get me wrong. I’m probably gonna play the heck out of this game and squeeze out every last drop until I can’t feel my fingers come January 2025. But I’ve been waiting for DK to embark on a new 2D story for years!

And I can’t imagine I’m the only one.

5. Winner: People who only break out their Switch when they have company

I love the Mario Party franchise. There’s nothing quite like this mini-game-based, virtual board game centered almost entirely around laughs and random luck in the Mushroom Kingdom. It’s chaotic and rowdy in the best possible ways.

But, like most folks, I really only play Mario Party if I have friends or family over who are willing to join in on the frantic fun. That happens maybe several times a year at most. (Side note: Have you ever played Mario Party solo? It’s not a rewarding experience!) Anyway, for us gamers who are occasionally social with their video games comes Super Mario Party: Jamboree, the latest full-fledged entry to Nintendo’s flagship party series.

It will feature five new boards, 110 minigames, and an online component that will let you play with up to 20 people (!). I’m not sure how the logistics of that will work, but I’m excited to find out and broaden my horizons by stealing stars from strangers I met 15 minutes ago.

Nintendo Direct June 2023 start time and where to watch

A June Nintendo Direct is happening after all, with Pikmin 4 and other upcoming Switch game info, and here’s where you can watch it

It turns out the June Nintendo Direct rumors were true, as Nintendo announced a presentation for June 21, 2023. The June Nintendo Direct is set to last for roughly 40 minutes and includes information about the upcoming Pikmin 4 and other Switch games set to launch later in 2023. Pikmin 4’s inclusion is expected, considering we’ve seen very little of the strategy game aside from a few brief blurbs. What else Nintendo might have in store is anyone’s guess, though some so-called leakers think there might be a Mario game in the works.

Here’s when the June Nintendo Direct starts and where you can watch it.

Where to watch Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct

The broadcast will focus on Switch games coming out within 2023’s first half.

It’s nearly time for another Nintendo Direct extravaganza, and this one will focus on games coming out for the Switch within the first half of 2023! Yes – that likely means we’ll see Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The February 2023 edition of Nintendo Direct begins on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, at 2 p.m. PDT // 5 p.m. EDT // 10 p.m. GMT. It’ll be live on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel, which you can watch here. According to Nintendo, the Direct will be around 40 minutes long, so there should be quite a number of trailers and surprises for anyone tuning in.

As for what you might see – we have no idea! In terms of first-party titles, some safe bets would be Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe. Third-party publishers might show off Octopath Traveler 2, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, and Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse

There’s also some chance of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp and Pikmin 4 – though those are admittedly wishful thinking. Nintendo loves packing these shows with surprises, though – so even the wildest predictions aren’t totally off the table.

Every game and release date announced during September 2022’s Nintendo Direct

Fire Emblem, Zelda, Fatal Frame, and loads more are coming to Nintendo Switch soon.

Another Nintendo Direct has come and gone. As is often the case, September 2022’s broadcast was overflowing with brilliant video game announcements — about 54 in total, even.

Sure, there’s no topping The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom‘s release date reveal or Goldeneye 007 finally coming back, but the smaller stuff deserves shout-outs too. It’s a lot to take in, especially if someone missed the showcase.

Luckily for you, we’ve put together a list of every game and release date announcement from the September 2022 Nintendo Direct below!

New Nintendo Direct is coming later this week

Here’s when and where to watch the latest Nintendo Direct showcase.

It’s almost time to collectively lose our minds at whatever Mario and company are cooking up next, as the September 2022 Nintendo Direct showcase has an air date.

The latest Nintendo Direct is happening on Sept. 13, 2022, at 7:00 P.M. PDT // 10:00 A.M. EDT // 2:00 P.M. GMT // 3:00 P.M. BST. There’ll be a broadcast on the company’s official YouTube channel here. It’ll be around 40 minutes, which is how long these shows usually run.

As for what sort of announcements there might be at this Nintendo Direct, the show will focus on Switch games launching this winter. Rumors have it that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports might be there. Please, for all that is holy — make it happen, Nintendo.

Teasers for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Bayonetta 3 are safe bets, while projects like Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp and Metroid Prime are a little less likely. Still possible, of course, but all we can do is guess for now. Maybe don’t hold out hope for Breath of the Wild 2, though.

Nintendo Direct is often fun for fans because the company tends to rapid-fire major reveals. Hopefully, Tuesday’s show is no different.

Biggest announcements from June 28’s Nintendo Partner Direct

All of the big announcements from June’s Nintendo Partner Direct that you need to know.

Fans aren’t super happy that June’s Nintendo Direct ended up being one dedicated to Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and another Partner Direct for third party games. Despite that, we already know that Nintendo has a pretty expansive line-up ready for 2022, and with these games the second half of the year is look much more appealing.

The June 28 Partner Direct has announced ports and timed exclusives launching this year, and we have all the information you need below.

Everything in today’s Nintendo Direct Mini – June 2022

We’ve rounded up what industry insiders have been saying will be shown at today’s Nintendo Direct Mini.

Nintendo recently announced a Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase is coming at 6 a.m. P.T, June 28. Here we’ve rounded up what industry insiders have been saying will be shown today.

Firstly, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb revealed that Metroid Prime is being re-released for the Nintendo Switch. This version will likely be a remaster according to Grubb and has been in the works for a while. When discussing what could be revealed in the showcase Grubb said, “I’ve been told that their plans are to release that game this holiday, I think almost certainly to line up with the 20th anniversary in November. So that’s happening, and they need to tell us when that release date is.”

Ubisoft spoiled things for itself when the website showed an Oct. 20, 2022, release date for Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope. Little else was openly revealed on the website, though from game art some have speculated that Bowser will be a playable character. The timing of the announcement and the subsequent removal of the release date has led people to suspect we will see more in today’s showcase.

Gematsu also spotted that the listing included a season pass which will give access to upcoming DLC, and a listing for a “Galactic Prestige Pack” which will unlock battle skins immediately. These could be tied into the fact that Ubisoft is selling both a standard and gold version of the game.

The final insider leak is that a switch port of Nier:Automata is expected to make an appearance in the showcase. Nacho Requena, editor for Spanish video game journal Manual, has been revealing information about the Direct on Twitter. He correctly predicted last week that there would be a Nintendo Direct scheduled for June 28.

He has now made further predictions. The most credible is the port mentioned above as others have also speculated its release. The Switch has proven it’s capable of running technically impressive games such as Witcher 3 in the past. Requena has also suggested there will be a Persona-based announcement at the direct. Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royale were all recently announced for Xbox, Steam, and PS5.

Nintendo announces latest Direct for June 2022

Nintendo just announced it will hold another Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo recently announced that it will hold another Nintendo Direct showcase scheduled for June 28.

In a tweet, Nintendo of America confirmed it will hold a Nintendo Direct before the end of the month. This latest Direct, which Nintendo is calling a Direct Mini, will focus on upcoming third-party games for the Nintendo Switch. The publisher has also revealed the Direct will be a “Partner Showcase” so the games shown will come from partner studios.

While the Direct will only be 25 minutes long there are a number of big titles coming to Nintendo Switch which fans will be hoping to see. As a partner showcase, upcoming games from Nintendo’s biggest franchises such as Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Splatoon 3, and the sequel to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild will not be receiving updates.

[mm-video type=video id=01fvcjnp6fsbvxksdqgj playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvcjnp6fsbvxksdqgj/01fvcjnp6fsbvxksdqgj-63f0de0fb272e8e5052147565eaa6662.jpg]

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is set to release July 29 and so it is possible that Nintendo will give us more information before fans get their hands on it. However, as Nintendo held a specific Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct only last week (June 22), it will likely get no more than a passing comment.

More probable is that Switch owners will get an update on the current progress concerning Bayonetta 3. Nintendo recently confirmed that the third in Platinum Games’ umbral witch trilogy is still on track for a 2022 release. However, we haven’t seen new footage since September last year. This will definitely be the game which people are most hoping to see.

Another of the major third-party releases which is reportedly coming this year is Ubisoft’s Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope. This will be the second Mario + Rabbids crossover game, and was announced in June of last year. However, we have heard few updates on progress since.

The third game which is likely to be shown is Sonic Frontiers. The collection of 2D Sonic games, Sonic Origins, recently released on Nintendo Switch bringing the blue blur to the forefront of everyone’s minds. While new gameplay was shown recently, Sonic Frontiers is still set for release this year and could see updates such as an official date.

The Direct is set to air at 6 a.m. PT.

Where are the Miis in Nintendo Switch Sports?

Nintendo Switch Sports’ debut trailer was missing one key thing: where are the Miis?

In my teenage years, I often played Tennis. In those tense 40-40 moments, where the word “deuce” was tossed around like an egg salad, it could feel confusing, disorientating, and overbearing. But a quick glance up at the crowd would show me the faces I was fighting for. Jesus was there. Bob Marley, Elvis, Shigeru Miyamoto, Peter Griffin from Family Guy – they were the ones who pushed me forward. I looked at my opponent again. Hitler stared back at me. I knew what I must do; I quickly took advantage and struck my opponent down with a fierce serve.

Wii Sports kept me coming back to its various games time and time again, even when there wasn’t anyone else to play with. Fighting against Mike Tyson in Boxing after embarrassing Harry Potter on the green was exhilarating. Bafflingly, it’s entirely absent from the upcoming Wii Sports sequel, Nintendo Switch Sports

[mm-video type=video id=01fvhyjfkrbd5d6vxwk7 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvhyjfkrbd5d6vxwk7/01fvhyjfkrbd5d6vxwk7-c63fd9313da39a201d492d5420baa1a6.jpg]

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker – but it does appear to be a complete misunderstanding of what made games like Wii Sports modern classics. Mii characters have become iconic thanks to games like Wii Sports, and now star in their own games like Tomodachi Life and Miitopia – hell, they’ve even been introduced to the Super Smash Bros. series. Love them or hate them, they have become a staple of Nintendo’s history and are entirely fused with the legacy of the Wii, one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Their exclusion here is disappointing.

Not all is lost, of course. There are player avatars in Nintendo Switch Sports, but these… I’m trying to be nice… abominations do not deserve any praise. They look more like Xbox Live Avatars than anything else, and those were, in the most polite way possible, charmless imitations of the Miis in the first place. My Xbox Live Avatar looks ridiculous and rides a weird unicorn. You know why? Because I don’t care about it. The stylized and simplistic Mii characters can roughly imitate any human face, while the more detailed avatars lack the necessary nuance. With added detail, Miis become haunting mimicries of humanity that lack a soul.

But this is Nintendo, after all. The little avatars we see in Nintendo Switch Sports are certainly not photorealistic, but they evoke that same XBL Avatar energy. These go beyond simplistic caricatures, and that universal charm has given way to something with all the personality of Mark Zuckerberg’s face. Horrific simulacrums resembling something vaguely human.

If we were to throw Nintendo Switch Sports characters, XBL Avatars, and Facebook’s weird metaverse creations into a hat, mix it around, and show them to people at random, the average person probably wouldn’t know that the styles are – I assume – supposed to be somehow distinct. But it all blends into a mess.

It makes sense if you look at it from Nintendo’s perspective. Wii Sports was a casual phenomenon, and Nintendo Switch Sports is aimed at those people who have been pulled back into the Nintendo ecosystem with games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Big Brain Academy, and Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training. These players are happy with a more approachable, familiar, and less “weird” presentation. At some point along the way, Miis definitely became weird. We can admit that.

Nintendo 3DS’ built-in StreetPass Quest developed the Miis at the start, slowly fleshing them out with personalities. Then the short-lived mobile game Miitomo came along and had Miis interacting with one another, wearing absurd clothing and saying absurd – and at times inappropriate — things. Before we knew it, Miis had their own distinct style – they were goofy. Thanks to the singing of Tomodachi Life and the inanity of Miitopia‘s battle system, Miis became defined, silly characters in and of themselves.

If the Miis, in their current state, were in Nintendo Switch Sports, it’d likely be a far sillier game than this looks to be. But I also fear it might be too serious. If Jesus isn’t cheering me on as I take down Hitler, I’m not sure I’ll be able to make those same fond memories.

The 10 best announcements from February 2022’s Nintendo Direct

Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, and Portal were among the big reveals.

Nothing sends Nintendo fans into joyous frenzies like a Direct, and Wednesday’s showcase was no exception.

There’s no doubt that heavy-hitters like Chrono CrossRadical Dreamers Edition  and Switch Sports  were crowd-pleasers, but February’s Nintendo Direct was overflowing with ridiculously hype announcements — so take your pick. The entire presentation is still available online  here. Jump to the 29:04 mark should the video playback not do so automatically.

Who has time to watch a 45-minute presentation of their own volition, though? Lucky for you, I’ve cobbled together a list of the most exciting announcements from Nintendo’s recent shindig and the accompanying trailers. Let’s dive in.
