NBA 2K25 overall ratings for OKC Thunder rookies revealed

NBA 2K25 overall ratings for OKC Thunder rookies revealed.

It’s August, which means less than a month remains from the annual release of the NBA 2K video game. NBA 2K25 — which releases on Sept. 6 — will provide gamers the first chance to play with the latest versions of rosters among the 30 NBA teams.

To tease and build excitement, NBA 2K has slowly released players’ overall ratings. They can change throughout the 2024-25 regular season. It recently revealed the ratings for the top rookies.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have three entrants from the 2024 NBA draft. Nikola Topic, Dillon Jones and Ajay Mitchell were all selected within the first 38 picks.

Topic has a 72 rating; Jones has a 69 rating; and Mitchell has a 68 rating.

These are pretty respectable beginner ratings for all three players. The Thunder don’t expect much from their rookie class this upcoming season.

Topic will be redshirted as he recovers from a torn ACL. Mitchell is limited with his two-way deal. Jones is the only one of the trio who could see minutes throughout the season but that’s a distant possibility barring health.

Thunder’s Nikola Topic flexes basketball knowledge in TikTok video

Thunder’s Nikola Topic flexes basketball knowledge in TikTok video.

Heading into the 2024 NBA draft process, Nikola Topic was tabbed as a high IQ player. This is shown in his playmaking and passing abilities. The 18-year-old has a high ceiling as a lead facilitator.

After he fell to the No. 12 spot due to a torn ACL, the Oklahoma City Thunder must practice patience with Topic as he will miss the 2024-25 season recovering from his knee injury.

But Topic’s basketball knowledge was flexed in the form of a TikTok. He was featured in a video where he was quizzed to name European NBA players.

The 18-year-old showed off his deep library of names as several players he mentioned were either bubble NBA players with short stints or played before his time.

It’s a fun video showing a little of Topic’s personality. It’s evident he’s a basketball savant and that obsessiveness paired with his work ethic gives him a shot to work out for the Thunder.

Thunder: Nikola Topić to miss 2024-25 season after undergoing surgery for torn left ACL

Thunder rookie Nikola Topić will miss the 2024-25 season after undergoing a procedure to address a torn left ACL.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Nikola Topić will miss the 2024-25 season after undergoing a procedure to address a torn left ACL, the team announced on Wednesday.

Topić suffered the non-contact injury with Crvena zvezda on May 13 against Partizan in Game 1 of the ABA League Finals. He was initially diagnosed with a partial tear in his kneeĀ in June at a predraft camp for international prospects in Treviso, Italy.

The 12th pick previously missed four months last season due to a ligament injury in the same knee. He was projected to be a top-five pick before his latest setback.

Oklahoma City guard Nikola Topić underwent a successful procedure to address a left ACL tear, the team announced today. The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan Jobe Institute in Los Angeles with Thunder medical personnel present.Ā Topić is expected to miss the 2024-25 season as part of his rehabilitation process.

Topić, who will turn 19 on Aug. 10, was named the ABA League Top Prospect after averaging 15.1 points, 5.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds on 50.5% shooting from the field last season. He joined Nikola Jokić, Goga Bitadze and Nikola Jović as previous players to win the award.

The 6-foot-6 guard began playing professionally in Serbia at 16 years old. He is highly touted for the size he brings to the next level and his ability on offense. He projects to eventually develop into a starting-caliber guard with the Thunder.

Topić expressed his gratitude to the team for drafting him following the injury. He will now have the resources to rehabilitate with the Thunder organization, which helped Chet Holmgren recover from a Lisfranc injury two years ago.

Thunder’s Nikola Topic undergoes surgery for torn ACL

Thunder’s Nikola Topic undergoes surgery for torn ACL.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Nikola Topic underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL. The procedure was conducted in Los Angeles. The 18-year-old is expected to miss the 2024-25 season.

This was inevitable once Topic suffered a knee injury in May 2024. After being viewed as a top prospect, his injury was likely the reason he slid down to the No. 12 spot in the 2024 NBA draft.

Topic has an upside as a prospect with his feel and passing. He must work on his shooting though as that was seen as the biggest area of improvement during the predraft process.

Once healthy, Topic will have a chance to be a starter next season. He can also be a backup facilitator. The Thunder can afford the swing and have a successful history with redshirt rookies like Chet Holmgren.

Bleacher Reports grades OKC Thunder 2024 offseason with A

Bleacher Reports grades OKC Thunder 2024 offseason with A.

The calendar will soon flip to August, which means most of the big offseason moves have already been made by NBA teams. Following the draft and free agency, most rosters are set.

This allows Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey to hand out offseason grades for all 30 NBA teams.

As one can expect, the Oklahoma City Thunder had a high result. They had a productive offseason headlined by the additions of Isaiah Hartenstein and Alex Caruso. OKC received an A for its efforts.

“The Oklahoma City Thunder may well have had the best offseason in the NBA.

They’re already among the youngest teams in the league and are coming off a first-place finish in the West. This summer, they addressed their glaring weaknesses…

Adding Isaiah Hartenstein gives the Thunder the option to pivot when necessary, and it’s reasonable to believe Hartenstein and the more perimeter-oriented Chet Holmgren can even play together…

The other weakness was Josh Giddey’s struggles as an outside shooter, which made him an easy option to sag off of. Alex Caruso will punish opposing defenses that choose to pack the paint rather than close out to his open catches.”

Bailey even mentioned their draft haul. The Thunder swung with Nikola Topic, who fell in draft boards because of a torn ACL that will keep him out next season. OKC has the luxury of waiting out his recovery.

“Add to those additions the team-friendly contracts for Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins, as well the pick of Nikola Topić (perhaps this class’ best playmaker) in the draft, and this is an easy A even though Topić figures to miss this season while recovering from a torn ACL.”

The Thunder entered the offseason with over $30 million in cap space and used it wisely to improve their roster. Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams are on bargain deals for the next two seasons, so they took advantage of the added payroll to spend.

Nikola Topic excited to share backcourt with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Nikola Topic excited to share backcourt with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The Oklahoma City Thunder betted with ceiling and patience when they selected Nikola Topic with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft.

The 18-year-old was seen as one of the best prospects in his class before he partially tore his ACL. He will miss all of next season and confirmed he will soon undergo surgery to repair his knee.

Topic had a chance to talk with local media on Saturday. It was the first time he’s been in OKC as he will call it his home for the foreseeable future.

“It’s bad but there are a lot of good things in that. A lot of positivity in that things,” Topic said on being redshirted. “See what the NBA is about, how it’s like living here. To make progress on the physical side on my body.”

OKC is playing the long game with Topic. It envisions him as an elite playmaker who can score downhill with hints of an outside shot. Thunder general manager Sam Presti noted after the season he thinks they can win the playoffs with the pass, he’d help with that.

If everything goes right for Topic, there’s a real possibility he’s a backcourt starter with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It’s too early to forecast the 2025-26 season, but he’ll have a shot to start from the jump if he impresses next offseason.

The 18-year-old said a few Thunder teammates have reached out to him. He noted he’s excited to play with Gilgeous-Alexander — who’s blossomed into one of the best players in the league.

“He’s obviously one of the best for sure,” Topic said about Gilgeous-Alexander. “Great leader, great person on the court. It really means much to me to play with him.”

It didn’t work out with Josh Giddey, but the Thunder get a redo at that type of archetype in Topic. He’ll be OKC’s best pure passer and will be a pick-and-roll savant. He’s a tall guard that can be a size advantage against most matchups.

If Topic develops an outside shot, he’ll be a threat with Gilgeous-Alexander. That duo should gel a lot better and could give the Thunder their backcourt of the future.

Nikola Topic confirms surgery on torn ACL; compares situation to Chet Holmgren

Nikola Topic confirms surgery on torn ACL; compares situation to Chet Holmgren.

The Oklahoma City Thunder introduced their 2024-25 rookies Nikola Topic, Dillon Jones and Ajay Mitchell. The trio had a chance to be in OKC for the first time being drafted by the organization.

The biggest name among the three players is Topic. The 18-year-old was seen as a potential top lottery pick before he partially tore his ACL in May.

This plummeted his draft stock. It afforded OKC the chance to select him at the No. 12 spot. Topic will be out all next season as he recovers from the knee injury. He also confirmed he will undergo surgery to repair his torn ALC.

This isn’t new territory for the Thunder. Chet Holmgren missed his first year recovering from a Lisfranc injury. He made up for lost time last season and was a dominant force for OKC as a rim protector.

While Topic hasn’t had the chance to meet Holmgren yet, the Thunder believe they have the blueprint to help the 6-foot-6 guard undergo his lengthy recovery process.

“I’m really grateful that they have experience with Chet who didn’t play his first year, so we assume that will be the case with me,” Topic said. “I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity, and I’ll try my best to do my best and to be the best version of myself.”

It’s a risky gamble that the Thunder can take. If Topic fully recovers and develops into an outside shooter, he can be a high-end playmaker starter.

It’ll be at least a year before the Thunder learn if Topic was worth the No. 12 selection. The potential was too enticing to pass up on. OKC now must stay patient with the 18-year-old.

Sam Presti dismisses theory that Nikola Topic is Josh Giddey’s replacement

Sam Presti dismisses theory that Nikola Topic is Josh Giddey’s replacement.

The Oklahoma City Thunder took a swing for the fences with the addition of Nikola Topic, who they drafted with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft.

It’ll be a while before it’s known if it was a homer or a foul ball.

The 18-year-old was regarded as one of the best playmakers of the class. He’s a passing savant who dominated overseas, which helped him be a highly-touted prospect.

A partially torn ACL in May plummeted his draft stock. He will be a redshirt and miss all next season as he recovers. Even when he was healthy, a lack of an outside shot and a skinny frame made him a risky selection.

The international prospect has passing chops but must work on his jumper to hit his ceiling as an abnormally large facilitator guard at 6-foot-6. Does that sound familiar to Thunder fans? If it does, it’s within good reason.

Josh Giddey had a similar archetype when he joined OKC in 2021. He only lasted three seasons with the Thunder before he was shipped to the Chicago Bulls last week.

The 21-year-old never developed a proper outside shot, which was a problem this past season. He had his worst career season as opposing defenses dared him to shoot.

The Thunder now get a redo with Topic, who’s projected to be a better driver and finisher around the rim than Giddey was. Despite the similarities, Sam Presti said it’s an unfair comparison.

“I wouldn’t compare him specifically to Josh or any other player in that way,” Presti said. “But like I said earlier, guys that are big for their position, that process the game well, those guys are play pretty much all over the floor, in different combinations.

“So we value those skill sets probably more than trying to, like, replicate a specific role or anything like that.”

Presti discussed how players like Topic, who can move the ball at an elite rate, are valued commodities. The Thunder’s 5-out offense is a perfect scheme for players who can find small passing pockets to their teammates.

“I do think those guys — I don’t think you can have enough people that can make decisions on the court,” Presti said. “And when you combine that with size, it definitely increases the effectiveness or the probabilities of those decisions being good.”

The best-case scenario with Topic is certainly appealing. In an ideal scenario, he joins Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a backcourt partner and can help set his teammates up with quality looks. The shot will likely make or break this pick.

But for now, Topic must turn his focus on his knee rehab. He must fully recover before he can daydream about his fit with the Thunder. It’ll be a while before the fruits of his labor are enjoyed, but OKC affords him the patience to rehab in the background of a title contender.

Sam Presti comments on Nikola Topic’s health status, sees benefits in redshirt season

Sam Presti comments on Nikola Topic’s health status, sees benefits in redshirt season.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have nailed most of their lottery picks in recent years, so it shouldn’t be a shocker to see them take a heat check with the No. 12 pick of the 2024 NBA draft.

The Thunder’s addition of Nikola Topic is a risky move that won’t see the benefits of it for a while. He recently partially tore his ACL and that will knock him out for next season.

Even before the injury, Topic was seen as a high-risk, high-reward prospect. He’s a fantastic playmaker who is a crafty driver but a lack of shot and strength could be detrimental.

The upside for Topic is he’s only 18 years old, which means he has plenty of room to grow both with his frame and skills. It’ll need to be a project start from scratch, but he has the potential to be a decent outside shooter.

Even though ACL tears aren’t a career-altering injury as they were a decade ago, there’s always a degree of uncertainty involved. But it sounds like the Thunder are fully prepared to help Topic’s recovery.

“The league put in some rules this year where everybody has access to the new — to all of the new players that are in the draft,” Sam Presti said. “We’ve seen all of the imaging. Everything that we’ve seen is — I don’t want to say suitable, but we’re comfortable with, I want to say.”

This isn’t new territory for them as Chet Holmgren also had a redshirt year when he suffered a Lisfranc injury in the 2022 offseason. It gave him a chance to slowplay his NBA experience. Safe to say he’s made a full recovery.

“Myself and Donnie Strack, our director of medical, who’s been here for 17 years now, traveled out to visit Nikola,” Presti said. “He examined him in person, was able to spend some time with him.”

Topic will get the same unique chance Holmgren did of learning the ins and outs of the NBA at a slower pace than the usual rookie — who is doing it between games. The Thunder believes that can be beneficial.

“Our experience with Chet and the time that we used with him during his first year was certainly a factor into the way we thought about this opportunity,” Presti said. “And I think we learned some things in that instance.”

Whether or not Topic was the right selection will be a question unanswered for several years. The Thunder preaches patience and that will be tested with Topic as he focuses on his recovery and sharpens his craft.

Nikola Topic reacts to being selected by Thunder, has message for fans

Nikola Topic reacts to being selected by Thunder, has message for fans.

The Oklahoma City Thunder made the surprising decision to select Nikola Topic with the No. 12 selection of the 2024 NBA draft. While the potential is tantalizing with the 18-year-old, there’s certainly a degree of risk involved.

The 6-foot-6 guard will have a redshirt season as he recovers from a partially torn ACL he suffered in May. This means one less season to prove himself on his rookie deal.

Even before the injury, Topic was seen as a risky addition. He’s an elite playmaker who can score downhill, but his lack of an outside shot and small frame meant he’ll be a work in progress.

Topic also has a limited sample size of being a productive player. Sure, he was dominant when he played overseas, but that’s on a sample size of less than 20 games.

Nevertheless, Topic was excited to join the Thunder. He had a chance to hug his new teammate Jalen Williams — who was at the draft to support his brother Cody being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the No. 10 selection.

The 18-year-old discussed being on the Thunder and said he’s excited to meet his teammates and staff.

“Every organization that I’ve been to, I met some really nice people. That is with Oklahoma, also,” Topic said. “Very, very nice coach. GMs, everybody, I’m just excited to meet them in person and talk to them.”

The Thunder had the rare opportunity to afford patience with Topic’s recovery. They’re fresh off a first-seed finish with their young core.

Considering how deep their roster is and the amount of cap space they have, OKC didn’t necessarily need its lottery pick to be an immediate contributor. Now, it must practice patience as Topic will wait over a year before he gets a chance to suit up for the Thunder.

If everything breaks right, the Thunder took advantage of his draft stock’s plummet and could’ve added an elite playmaker with serious size. He can be a high-end starter in the long-term future.

“I’ll give 150 percent of myself for every ball, every possession, every (time on) defense,” Topic said.
