UFC on ESPN 42 pre-event facts: Darren Elkins reaches historic milestone

The best facts and figures for Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 42, where several familiar veterans have a shot at history.

The UFC returns to Florida on Saturday for UFC on ESPN 42, which takes place at Amway Center in Orlando with a card that airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

A welterweight headliner will close out the card as longtime contender [autotag]Stephen Thompson[/autotag] (16-6-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC) will search for his first win in two years when he takes on [autotag]Kevin Holland[/autotag] (23-8 MMA, 9-5 UFC).

Niko Price returns after 14-month layoff, faces Phil Rowe at UFC Orlando

Healthy for the first time since 2018, Niko Price eyes another performance bonus against finisher Phil Rowe.

Fan-favorite [autotag]Niko Price[/autotag] is finally back and ready to go after a lengthy, injury-induced hiatus.

Price (15-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) is set to compete in front of a home-state crowd when he takes on [autotag]Phil Rowe[/autotag] at the UFC Fight Night event scheduled for Dec. 3. The event takes place at Amway Center in Orlando, Fla.

A person with knowledge of the matchup recently confirmed the booking Tuesday to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. News of the fight was first reported by UFE Media.

Price, 33, returns for the first time since knee surgery to repair injured ACL, MCL, and LCL ligaments. While the surgery occurred following his October 2021 loss, Price told MMA Junkie in July he battled the injuries dating back to 2018. Even still, Price won his most recent bout, however, with a unanimous decision over Alex Oliveira.

“I’ve been knocking people out and everything with half power,” Price said. “Now, I have full power, I have full everything. I’m excited to see what I can do. The power on the side that was hurt is so much more.”

Meanwhile, Rowe, 32, enters off back-to-back victories by TKO. Following a defeat in his UFC debut, Rowe finished Orion Cosce and Jason Witt, both in Round 2.

With the addition, the UFC Orlando lineup includes:

  • Stephen Thompson vs. Kevin Holland
  • Tai Tuivasa vs. Sergei Pavlovich
  • Derek Brunson vs. Jack Hermansson
  • Tracy Cortez vs. Amanda Ribas
  • Darren Elkins vs. Jonathan Pearce
  • Matheus Nicolau vs. Matt Schnell
  • Eryk Anders vs. Kyle Daukaus
  • Marc Diakiese vs. Michael Johnson
  • Clay Guida vs. Scott Holtzman
  • Emily Ducote vs. Angela Hill
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Rafael dos Anjos
  • Yazmin Jauregui vs. Istela Nunes
  • Niko Price vs. Phil Rowe

UFC’s Niko Price reveals for years he fought ‘missing a bunch of ligaments’ in his knee – but recent surgery fixed that

UFC welterweight Niko Price says he’s been fighting on a bad wheel for years, but has finally addressed the issue.

[autotag]Niko Price[/autotag] has shared the cage with some of the best welterweights the UFC has to offer, but for years he has been doing so with significant injuries.

The 12-fight UFC veteran has had his ups and downs in recent years, but despite coming off a win in his last outing, Price (15-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) decided it was time to address a lingering knee injury. It’s a significant one that probably would have immediately sidelined most fighters, but one that Price competed with since 2018.

So, why take time away to fix the issue now?

“The level of competition I’m facing now,” Price recently told MMA Junkie. “We’re going up, man. Everybody they throw at me, they’re savages. They’re technical, they’re physical, mental – they’re all beasts in every aspect. I just had to take a step back, let my body become full again, so I can become the real Niko. Not like a half-ass Niko walking around (saying), ‘I’m the best, I’m the best,’ but I didn’t even have a full body. Now I got a full body, I’m ready to come out there to throw some real things at you.”

What exactly was wrong with Price? In his words, he was “missing a bunch of ligaments” in his knee.

“Three of the four,” Price explained. “ACL, LCL, MCL. I didn’t have those.”

The damage dates back to his fight camp for his UFC Fight Night 133 bout against Randy Brown in 2018. Price said he blew his ACL out in preparation for that fight, but he would go on to compete anyway. Price stopped Brown with vicious hammerfists from his back in the second round, earning a Performance of the Night bonus for the highlight-reel moment.

Despite the victory, Price caused further damage to his knee. However, that didn’t stop him from competing. In fact, he would go on to fight eight more times with mixed results before undergoing surgery following a win over Alex Oliveira in October.

“I’ve been knocking people out and everything with half power,” Price said. “Now, I have full power, I have full everything. I’m excited to see what I can do. The power on the side that was hurt is so much more.”

In August, Price hopes he will be cleared for competition. If all is good then, he will look to make his return to the cage before the end of 2022, and won’t be too picky about who he steps into the cage to face.

“I want ’em all,” Price said. “Everybody, bro. Half the dudes that beat me are like top five now, and they only beat me because I had a bad night.”

UFC Fight Night 193 medical suspensions: Thiago Santos, Johnny Walker face 180-day terms

Headliners Thiago Santos and Johnny Walker are both looking at six months after UFC Fight Night 193.

Although [autotag]Thiago Santos[/autotag] and [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] didn’t deliver the barnburner fans expected, they are both looking at six months after UFC Fight Night 193.

Former title challenger Santos defeated Walker via unanimous decision in the main event on Saturday, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streamed on ESPN+.

After their five-round battle, Santos will need doctor clearance on his left ring finger, left foot, left knee, and an X-ray on his left ribs before he can resume competition. Meanwhile, Walker needs an X-ray on his left foot before getting cleared.

Also potentially sidelined for 180 days is [autotag]Niko Price[/autotag], who needs an X-ray on his left knee after defeating Alex Oliveira; [autotag]Krzysztof Jotko[/autotag], who needs an X-ray on his left foot after edging out Misha Cirkunov; [autotag]Devonte Smith[/autotag], who needs his right orbital fracture cleared by a doctor after his knockout loss to Jamie Mullarkey, and [autotag]Johnny Eduardo[/autotag], who also needs his right orbital fracture cleared after his submission loss to Alejandro Perez.

UFC Fight Night 193: Alex Oliveira vs. Niko Price odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 193 odds and lines between Alex Oliveira vs. Niko Price, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a welterweight bout on the main card, Alex Oliveira meets Miko Price at UFC Fight Night 193 – also known as UFC Vegas 38 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 193: Oliveira vs. Price odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 4 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

The 33-year-old Brazilian Oliveira will be looking to avoid the mat, as his last two fights against Shavkat Rakhmonov and Randy Brown have been losses via submission. Both of those losses came in the first round, and he is just 2-5 across his last seven bouts.

Price is 0-2 with one no-contest across his last three outings. His last victory was a KO/TKO victory against James Vick in the first round Oct. 12, 2019. While each of his last two bouts have gone the distance the previous nine resulted in stoppages.

UFC Fight Night 193 Oliveira vs. Price: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Oliveira (22-10-1) | Price (14-5-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Price (-200) is just a little too expensive for my liking, costing you two times your potential return.

Oliveira is no pushover and could take this one all the way if he can avoid going to the mat. “Cowboy” has three losses via submission across his last seven fights, so he will not want to get into a ground and pound type fight.

AVOID, and get more specific instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

Playing OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (-155) is a good bet. These two experienced fighters aren’t going to get caught early with a kill shot. They’ll take time to feel each other out.

I don’t believe it will go the distance, however, so NO: WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? (-220) is the play.

As mentioned, get specific and play a two-round block. PRICE TO WIN IN ROUND 2 (+440) and PRICE TO WIN IN ROUND 3 (+900) are solid plays. Yes, you’ll lose one of them if he wins in Round 2 or 3, but you would still be well ahead.

Alex ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira vs. Niko Price set for UFC Fight Night 192

A pair of welterweights with a penchant for exciting fights will clash in October.

A pair of welterweights with a penchant for exciting fights will clash in October.

[autotag]Alex Oliveira[/autotag] and [autotag]Niko Price[/autotag] have agreed to meet at UFC Fight Night 192, MMA Junkie today learned from two people with knowledge of the booking who asked to remain anonymous because the promotion has yet to make a formal announcement.

UFC Fight Night 192 is scheduled for Oct. 2 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams live on ESPN+.

“Cowboy” Oliveira (22-10-1 MMA, 11-8-1 UFC) finds himself in need of a win after suffering back-to-back losses to Randy Brown and Shavkat Rakhmonov. Prior to the setbacks, Oliveira had enjoyed a two-fight winning streak that included victories over Peter Sobotta and Max Griffin.

Meanwhile, Price (14-5 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC) also hopes to return to the win column following two consecutive losses – at least officially. In July, Price dropped a unanimous decision to Michel Pereira, while he also suffered a third-round TKO loss to Vicente Luque in May 2020. In between, Price fought to a majority draw with Donald Cerrone, though that result was later overturned to a no contest when “The Hybrid” tested positive for THC metabolites.

With the addition to the card, UFC Fight Night 192 includes:

  • Thiago Santos vs. Johnny Walker
  • Bethe Correia vs. Karol Rosa
  • Jared Gordon vs. Joe Solecki
  • Grant Dawson vs. Diego Ferreira
  • Fernando Padilla vs. Sean Soriano
  • Gaetano Pirrello vs. Douglas Silva de Andrade
  • Kyle Daukaus vs. Kevin Holland
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Jamahal Hill
  • Jamie Mullarkey vs. Devonte Smith
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Aspen Ladd
  • Johnny Eduardo vs. Alejandro Perez
  • Alexander Hernandez vs. Leonardo Santos
  • Misha Cirkunov vs. Krzysztof Jotko
  • Alex Oliveira vs. Niko Price

The promotion on Thursday announced the booking, which was first reported by AgFight.

Pereira (25-11 MMA, 3-2 UFC) looks to increase his winning streak to three in his first fight of 2021. Following a two-fight skid, the 27-year-old Brazilian most recently defeated Zelim Imadaev and Khaos Williams in back-to-back outings.

UFC’s Niko Price suspended, fined $8,500 for traces of marijuana in system

Niko Price’s draw against Donald Cerrone also was overturned to a no contest.

UFC welterweight [autotag]Niko Price[/autotag] is the most recent fighter disciplined by the Nevada Athletic Commission for traces of marijuana (carboxy-THC) being found in his system.

On Wednesday, Price was handed a six-month suspension and fined $8,500, prosecution fees of $145.36, and had the result of his UFC Fight Night 178 fight against Donald Cerrone overturned from a draw to a no contest.

Since the suspension results from his Sept. 19 bout, the duration will be implemented retroactively. Price will be eligible to compete on March 19, 2021. The disciplinary action marks the second time Price has been suspended for marijuana.

[lawrence-related id=553910,553792]

After he knocked out Alex Morono at UFC Fight Night 104 in February 2017, Price tested positive for carboxy-THC. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which oversaw the event, suspended Price 90 days and fined him $1,000. Additionally, his win was overturned to a no contest.
