CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Reds center fielder Nick Senzel went 0-for-3 and scored a run for the Reds in their spring training victory over the Tigers Tuesday at Great American Ball Park.

Senzel was an all-state player at Knox County’s Farragut High School, where he played for legendary head coach Matt Buckner.

He also played at the University of Tennessee under coach Dave Serrano.

For the Volunteers, he was a member of Louisville Slugger’s Freshman All-America Team despite playing as a walk-on.

After an illustrious career with the Diamond Vols, Senzel was taken in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft by the Reds with the No. 2 overall pick.

He made his big league debut with Cincinnati on May 3, 2019, and hit .256 during his rookie season, clubbing 12 home runs and driving in 42 runs.

CINCINNATI — A former University of Tennessee baseball player is doing his part to help those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nick Senzel, an outfielder for the Cincinnati Reds, recently donated $10,000 to one of the city’s non-profit organizations that cares for children of essential workers.

Senzel, a high school standout in one of Tennessee’s powerhouse programs, Farragut High School, gave the donation to The Children’s Home of Cincinnati earlier this week.

The home cares for children as it provides behavioral health and education for the city’s children with developmental disabilities. It cares for the city year-round.

It recently implemented a program which serves children of essential workers that are unable to stay home while schools and daycare centers are shut down due to the pandemic.

The new program had 12 children receiving care as of Wednesday, April 22.

Senzel was an All-Southeastern Conference standout during his days with the Volunteers and was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.

He hit .258 and clubbed 12 home runs for the Reds during his rookie campaign in 2019.

KNOXVILLE — With the 2020 Major League Baseball season indefinitely placed on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a pair of players have returned home to Knoxville and are attempting to stay in shape by working out together while they continue to wait to play again.

Nick Senzel of the Cincinnati Reds and Lane Thomas of the St. Louis Cardinals have returned to East Tennessee and are working together.

Senzel, a Farragut High School graduate, played three seasons for the University of Tennessee before the Reds drafted the outfielder with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft.

For Cincinnati, Senzel has a .256 lifetime batting average. He hit 12 home runs and drove in 42 runs during his 2019 rookie season.

Thomas, a Bearden High School product, committed to play for the Vols as a sophomore in 2012, but he opted to go pro after graduating from high school. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Thomas made his Major League debut with St. Louis. The center fielder appeared in his first big league game last April.

He hit .316 last year for the Cardinals, clubbing four home runs and driving in 12 runs.
