The Washington Nationals make roster moves with two former Vols.

Washington announced roster moves, including two former Vols, on Saturday.

“The Washington Nationals recalled infielder Trey Lipscomb from Triple-A Rochester and designated third baseman Nick Senzel for assignment on Saturday,” Washington President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo announced.

Lipscomb was selected by Washington in the third-round of the 2022 Major League Baseball draft (No. 84 overall). He won the 2022 Southeastern Conference Tournament and regular-season championship with the Vols.

Washington will host St. Louis on Saturday at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. First pitch between the Nationals and Cardinals is slated for 4:05 p.m. EDT on Saturday.

Three Vols start in White Sox-Nationals game

Three former Vols started in the Chicago White Sox-Washington Nationals game on Wednesday.

Chicago defeated Washington, 2-0, on Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Three former Vols started in the contest.

Former Vol Garrett Crochet started and pitched five innings for the White Sox. He recorded six strikeouts, while allowing three hits and three walks. Crochet totaled 89 pitches, including 56 strikes.

Former Vols Trey Lipscomb and Nick Senzel went for a combined 0-for-6 against Chicago. Lipscomb started at second base, while Senzel started at third base for the Nationals.

The White Sox won the three-game series against Washington, 2-1.

Former Vol Trey Lipscomb returned to the Nationals’ starting lineup at first base. He went 0-for-2, recording one walk and one run.

Former Vol Nick Senzel also started at third base for Washington against the Dodgers. He went 1-for-3 and hit a two-out home run in the second inning.

Washington recalled Lipscomb on Wednesday after placing outfielder Lane Thomas on the 10-day injured list due to a left knee sprain.

Washington will next play on Thursday against the Dodgers at Nationals Park. First pitch is slated for 4:05 p.m. EDT.

Washington optioned former Vol Trey Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Monday.

The move comes after former Vol Nick Senzel was activated from the 10-day injured listed by the Nationals.

Lipscomb made his Major League Baseball debut with Washington on March 30 after Senzel was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured right thumb.

Senzel made his 2024 debut with the Nationals on Monday at Los Angeles. He started at third base and went 1-for-3 and recorded one walk versus the Dodgers.

Senzel signed a one-year contract with the Nationals during the offseason.

The former Vol played for the Reds from 2019-23. He appeared in 377 games, recording a .239 batting average, 33 home runs, 125 RBIs, 104 walks and 32 stolen bases.

Senzel played for the Vols from 2014-16 and was an All-America standout and an All-Southeastern Conference performer. He was selected No. 2 overall by Cincinnati in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft.

The Nationals will open play for the 2024 season on March 28 at Cincinnati. Washington’s home-opener is slated for April 1, 2024 versus Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati defeated St. Louis, 19-2, Friday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.

Former Vol Nick Senzel entered the game as a pinch hitter and remained in the contest in right field. He was 1-for-2 and scored one run. The contest was Senzel’s first appearance for the Reds since Sept. 24.

Senzel was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He played at Tennessee from 2014-16 and was an All-America standout and an All-Southeastern Conference performer.

Senzel came to the Vols from Farragut High School in Farragut, Tennessee.

Cincinnati will next play Saturday at St. Louis. First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. EDT at Busch Stadium.
