Notre Dame staffer to coach linebackers in SEC

Reunited and it feels so good…

Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame are still in search for a defensive coordinator but now have another coaching departure to potentially replace.

Defensive analyst Nick Lezynski, a former Notre Dame player, is leaving that role to join former Fighting Irish defensive coordinator Clark Lea, who is the head coach at Vanderbilt.  Lezynski worked under Lea with the Irish and will coach the linebackers for the Commodores.

Lezynski had been on Notre Dame’s staff since 2018 and will be replacing John Egorugwu who left Vanderbilt to join the New York Giants coaching staff.

Notre Dame one of four finalists for safety recruit Sherrod Covil

Will Notre Dame beat out three ACC schools for Covil’s services?

Notre Dame has made the final cut for safety recruit Sherrod Covil’s college choices. Also among his final choices are ACC schools Miami, North Carolina and Clemson. He will announce his decision Thursday on Rivals. Ahead of this big day, Covil spoke with Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney, who asked for Covil’s thoughts about each of the programs eagerly awaiting his announcement:

The fact that Covil considers Notre Dame one of his top-two choices gives the Irish reason for optimism. He particularly gives credit to senior defensive analyst Nick Lezynski for being aggressive in his pursuit of him. It shows how it truly takes an entire coaching staff to bring talent in.

Exports for both Rivals and 247Sports believe it’s a certainty that Covil will choose Clemson. If that’s the case, he put on a nice poker face for his interview. Then again, no recruit really is going to say where they want to go until they make their official announcement. And so, we wait.

Notre Dame Walk-On TE Xavier Lezynski Looking to Make Impact

An NJ.com story about Notre Dame walk-on tight end Xavier Lezynski wastes no time with the “Rudy” reference.

An NJ.com story about Notre Dame walk-on tight end Xavier Lezynski wastes no time with the “Rudy” reference. To be fair, it also acknowledges that there’s little in common with Lezynski and Rudy Ruettiger. For one, Lezynski is 7 inches taller and nearly 70 pounds heavier than Ruettiger was when he made his famous appearance. However, he’s also played as many snaps as Ruettiger did:  two, both against Bowling Green in 2019.

The story goes on to talk about Lezynski’s family, which resides in Newtown, Pennsylvania. His parents met at Notre Dame, and all four of their kids graduated from there. One of them, Nick, is on Brian Kelly’s staff as a defensive senior analyst. If there ever was a family defined by one school, this is it.

There’s no telling how much of the field Lezynski will see this year given his small size in comparison to Notre Dame’s other tight ends. Hopefully, it will be more than two plays against a team that comes to South Bend to take its lumps and go home. But no matter what happens, just to wear the gold and blue during Saturdays in the fall is honorable enough for him.
