Titans place Dzubnar, McNichols on COVID-19 list among 3 roster moves

The Titans now have three players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

On the same day the Tennessee Titans needed to trim their roster down to a maximum of 80 players, the team announced a trio of roster moves.

Among them was the placement of linebacker Nick Dzubnar and running back Jeremy McNichols on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. In addition, Tennessee also waived defensive back Kevin Peterson.

Dzubnar was added to the roster just last week after going unsigned and made his preseason debut on Saturday night versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent the 2020 campaign with the Titans.

The Titans now have three players on the COVID-19 list. Defensive lineman Anthony Rush was added to it on Monday, one day after head coach Mike Vrabel revealed he had tested positive for the virus on Sunday.

The Titans have one more preseason contest coming up against the Chicago Bears at Nissan Stadium on Saturday night. The following Tuesday will be the final roster cutdown day.

Titans agree to terms with LB Nick Dzubnar

The Titans reunited with a familiar face on Monday.

The Tennessee Titans reunited with a familiar face on Monday afternoon after agreeing to terms with linebacker and special teams ace, Nick Dzubnar.

Dzubnar was a free-agent signing of the Titans in 2020 and appeared in all 16 games for Tennessee, playing predominantly on special teams. He also chipped in with 13 snaps on defense throughout the season.

The 30-year-old Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo product tallied 13 special teams stops, leading the team. Prior to his stint with the Titans, Dzubnar spent five seasons with the Chargers.

The addition of Dzubnar comes in the wake of linebacker B.J. Bello suffering an injury during the preseason opener on Friday against the Atlanta Falcons, which resulted in him being placed on Injured Reserve.

Dzubnar will now battle for a spot on the 53-man roster, competing against fellow linebackers Jan Johnson and Justin March-Lillard.

Tennessee made seven other roster moves on Monday, including the additions of safeties Clayton Geathers and Bradley McDougald.

Watch: Colts’ Matthew Adams throws punch, gets ejected vs. Titans

The Colts are down a special teams player after Adams was ejected for throwing a punch.

The Indianapolis Colts will be down one of their special teams players after linebacker Matthew Adams threw a punch and was ejected during the second quarter of the Week 12 game versus the Tennessee Titans.

The infraction occurred when the Colts were punting to the Titans with just over one minute remaining in the first half and with Indianapolis trailing 28-14.

Adams got tangled up with Titans inside linebacker and special teams ace, Nick Dzubnar, who ended up being on the receiving end of the Colts linebacker’s blows, which led to his ejection.

In fact, it looked like Adams got in a one-two punch. Here’s a look at the play in question that got him tossed.

Interestingly enough, Adams just tweeted this on Saturday night:

The penalty helped push the Titans into Colts territory after a Kalif Raymond return, and five plays later Tennessee was able to punch it in for six. With the score, the Titans are now blowing out the Colts, 35-14 at the half.

Titans’ Nick Dzubnar brings ‘hair on fire’ approach to special teams

Titans fans are going to love Nick Dzubnar’s approach to special teams.

The Tennessee Titans inked inside linebacker Nick Dzubnar to a one-year contract earlier this offseason to assume the role of special teams ace, and he’s ready to bring the same approach that worked so well for him as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers.

So, what’s Dzubnar’s (pronounced duh-ZOOB-nar) approach exactly?

Well, it’s simple really: the 29-year-old likes to play with nonstop effort and at “100 miles an hour with my hair on fire,” according to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

“I feel like that’s why the Tennessee Titans brought me here,” he said. “I can’t tell you if there’s a certain trick, all I know is to go 100 miles an hour with my hair on fire — 100% effort, nonstop, nonstop, nonstop until I get to the ball carrier or whatever it is, whoever is returning. I think it’s more of a mindset and attitude that I had, growing up, playing sports.

“That’s helped me excel especially in special teams, because special teams to me is a dogfight every single one. Whether it’s punt, punt return, kickoff, kickoff return, it’s just a straight fight. If it’s a one-on-one battle, it’s you against the other guy. I don’t like to lose. I look forward to good competition with other good special teams guys, and like I said, it’s a battle. It’s a fight. I like to think that I can come out on top.”

Dzubnar does have somewhat big shoes to fill in his first year in Nashville.

The same role he’s taking over was once owned by inside linebacker Daren Bates, who proved to be a valuable player on special teams the past three seasons but remains a free agent and is likely done with the Titans.

While we can expect Dzubnar to make the cut and have a key role on special teams in 2020, it remains to be seen if he’ll be the fourth inside linebacker on defense behind Jayon Brown, Rashaan Evans and David Long, as he’s played a grand total of 65 defensive snaps during his five-year career.

Normally we wouldn’t put much thought into the bottom of the depth chart at inside linebacker, but the Titans needed every single one on the roster in 2019 after Brown dealt with injuries. Thankfully, the Titans had sensational depth at the position, with Long and veteran Wesley Woodyard serving as backups.

With Woodyard still on the open market and highly unlikely to return, Dzubnar may have to fill his shoes, also.

Contract details for Tennessee Titans’ signing of Nick Dzubnar

Nick Dzubnar’s deal with the Titans is for one year.

The Tennessee Titans added to their linebacker corps., and more specifically their special teams unit, with the signing of former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker, Nick Dzubnar.

On Monday, we got the specific details of the contract Dzubnar signed to play in Nashville in 2020.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Dzubnar’s deal is for one year and it will pay him $1.047 million.

Dzubnar spent five seasons with the Chargers, playing mostly on special teams. In fact, he has just 65 career snaps on defense.

While we know where the 28-year-old will fit in on the Titans, we’re not exactly sure who he’ll be replacing.

One would have to assume that he will take over the role of either Daren Bates or Wesley Woodyard, both of whom are linebackers and played a significant role on special teams last season.

Both Bates and Woodyard have been key contributors to the Titans over the years in their own ways, so Dzubnar will have some big shoes to fill.

Watch: New Titans LB Nick Dzubnar introduces himself to fans

New Titans special teams ace Nick Dzubnar is excited to be in Nashville.

The Tennessee Titans made the signing of linebacker and special teams ace Nick Dzubnar official on Thursday.

Shortly after that was done, Dzubnar recorded a video that was posted to social media by the Titans’ official Twitter account, introducing himself to fans.

Check it out.

Dzubnar has spent his entire five-year career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, playing mostly on special teams. In 2019, he played a career-high 332 special teams snaps and totaled eight combined tackles

The 28-year-old has played 65 snaps on defense during his career, but didn’t play on any last season. The most snaps he’s ever played on defense was 45 in 2016, but he’s taken part in just four snaps combined the past three years.

Dzubnar could very well serve in the role that either Daren Bates or Wesley Woodyard played on special teams, which would mean at least one of them won’t be back. If that’s the case, he’ll have big shoes to fill.

Tennessee Titans to add Nick Dzubnar: 4 things to know

Here’s a little more background on linebacker Nick Dzubnar.

The Tennessee Titans reportedly signed linebacker and special teams player Nick Dzubnar to a one-year deal on Monday night.

The most common response to this signing is, “who?”

Well, we’re here to give you a bit more background on the newest Titan. Here are four things to know.

1. How to say his name

Because the spelling of his name will undoubtedly cause some kind of confusion, according to Pro Football Reference, it’s pronounced “duh-ZOOB-nar.”

The 6-foot-1, 240-pound linebacker went undrafted out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and was born in Anaheim, California.

Report: Titans to sign LB Nick Dzubnar to 1-year deal

The Titans are signing LB Nick Dzubnar.

The Tennessee Titans are adding a linebacker in free agency who is really considered a “special teams ace.”

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Titans are going to sign Nick Dzubnar to a one-year deal.

This move could mean the end of linebacker Daren Bates in Nashville, as Dzubnar plays the same position and is also a special teams contributor. Nothing has been confirmed on that front, though.

Dzubnar has spent all five of his NFL seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. He went undrafted out of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

In 2019, the 28-year-old didn’t play a single snap on defense, so he was exclusively a special teams player. He recorded eight tackles (three solo) in 16 games.

And, because spelling of his name will undoubtedly cause some confusion on how to say it, according to Pro Football Reference, it’s pronounced “duh-ZOOB-nar.”

The Los Angeles Chargers had their final practice on Friday before traveling to the east coast to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here is a look at the final injury report with designations ahead of the Week 14 bout:

Both teams appear to be relatively healthy heading into this weekend’s matchup.

For the Chargers, linebacker Nick Dzubnar is the only one who is questionable with a concussion that he sustained in the loss to the Denver Broncos. Wide receiver Mike Williams was a full go after being limited with a knee injury on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Chargers still have five games remaining in the regular season. However, sitting at 4-7, their playoff chances are nearly diminished, which means that in a little over a month the front office will have some decisions to make.

With a few notable players on the roster that are set to become unrestricted free agents, general manager Tom Telesco and company will have to start thinking about who is worthy of returning for another stint with L.A. when they move into their new stadium with the Rams in 2020.

With that, here’s an updated look at the 16 players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the beginning of the 2020 league year.
