Kyrie Irving, Nic Claxton remain sidelined vs. Hawks

The Brooklyn Nets must continue to make do without Kyrie Irving. He is one of multiple Nets who won’t play against the Atlanta Hawks.

David Nwaba joins the long list of Nets who will not be available for Brooklyn’s game against the last-place team in the Eastern Conference, the 6-23 Atlanta Hawks. Nwaba suffered an Achilles injury on Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs. Multiple reports indicate he tore his right Achilles and will need to undergo season-ending surgery.

In addition to Nwaba, Caris LeVert (right thumb), Nic Claxton (left hamstring soreness) and Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) remain out.

Kenny Atkinson has provided updates on Irving’s workload of late, but the Nets have yet to provide a timetable on his estimated return, unlike LeVert (four to six weeks from the date of his surgery). The Nets have not provided an update on Claxton’s timetable either.

Saturday’s game will mark the 18th in a row which Irving has sat out for the Nets this season.

David Nwaba listed on Nets injury report vs. Spurs, probable to play

Nets wing David Nwaba is dealing with an ankle injury heading into Brooklyn’s matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.

David Nwaba was added to the Brooklyn Nets’ length injury report on Wednesday leading up to their matchup with the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday.

He’s currently dealing with a right ankle sprain. Though, Nwaba is still likely to play, having been listed as probable.

Nets rookie Nic Claxton is out again for the Nets. He’s still dealing with left hamstring soreness, which popped up when he was with the Long Island Nets. Of course, Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) is still out, as is Caris LeVert (right thumb surgery) — the latter of which is with the team, while the former stayed back in Brooklyn.

Lastly, Henry Ellenson is back with Long Island. He started the trip with Brooklyn in New Orleans. Being a two-way player, he is limited to 45 days at the NBA level.

Kyrie Irving’s on-court work has ‘ramped up,’ still out vs. Raptors

The Brooklyn Nets will, once again, be short-handed for Saturday’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) and Caris LeVert (right thumb surgery) remain unavailable for the Brooklyn Nets heading into their first game of a back-to-back against the Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers.

Additionally, Nic Claxton will not be available for Atkinson against the Raptors. The rookie is still sidelined due to left hamstring soreness.

Atkinson will have even less to work with following Iman Shumpert’s release. Wilson Chandler will not be available until Sunday against the 76ers, when his suspension ends.

Irving and LeVert have both progressed with their rehab. LeVert is getting shots up and Irving is back on the court. Though, neither is taking part in contact work yet.

However, Kenny Atkinson told reports at Friday’s practice Irving took another step in the right direction, per Mollie Walker of the New York Post.

He did on-court work today with no contact. Still not cleared for that. No timetable on when that’s going to happen. I will say the on-court, non-contact stuff has been ramped up,

Iman Shumpert doubtful against Hornets, Nic Claxton out

The Brooklyn Nets may be without one of their top defenders off the bench on Wednesday when they play the Charlotte Hornets.

Nic Claxton suffered a hamstring injury while he was with the Long Island Nets on Monday. He returned to Brooklyn on Tuesday, along with Rodions Kurucs, but will not be available for Brooklyn on Wednesday. The Nets rookie has been ruled out against the Charlotte Hornets due to left hamstring soreness.

The Nets could also be without wing Iman Shumpert, who signed with the team on November 13, did not play in Brooklyn’s game on November 14, but has appeared in every game since. He is doubtful due to left knee soreness.

Brooklyn will also be without Kyrie Irving (right shoulder impingement) and Caris Levert (right thumb surgery).

LeVert has progressed with his rehab and is finally getting shots up.

Irving is even further along than his partner in the backcourt. He took part in on-court work on Tuesday.

Nic Claxton, Rodions Kurucs recalled by Nets

Nic Claxton injured his hamstring on Monday while with the Long Island Nets. He can now receive the necessary treatment in Brooklyn.

The Nets sent both Nic Claxton and Rodions Kurucs to Long Island on Monday to play for Brooklyn’s G League team against Raptors 905. The Long Island Nets wound up losing 106-95 and are now last in the G League’s Eastern Conference with a 2-10 record.

While Rodions Kurucs had a solid showing (14 points on 6-for-7 shooting and five rebounds), things didn’t go as well for Nic Claxton.

Not because the rookie played poorly. He just wasn’t able to see the floor much because he suffered a hamstring injury.

On Monday, Brooklyn announced both Claxton and Kurucs had been recalled from their assignment with Long Island.

Long Island gets back to work on Wednesday at 11 a.m. as the Nets play host to the Westchester Knicks.

Brooklyn gets back to work a few hours after Long Island and welcome the Charlotte Hornets to Barclays Center for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Nic Claxton suffers hamstring injury while with Long Island Nets

Nic Claxton’s assignment with the Long Island Nets was cut short due to an injury.

On Monday, the Brooklyn Nets assigned Nicolas Claxton to the G League for the first time. The rookie had not played in a game since Thanksgiving Eve, and there was no reason to expect any change with Jarrett Allen eating up most of the minutes at center and DeAndre Jordan providing quality minutes off the bench.

Claxton was able to play right away with Long Island, who had a game against Raptors 905 on Monday.

Unfortunately for the 2019 Nets draft pick, he was only able to log six minutes of play. The rookie big man suffered a hamstring injury and did not return for Long Island.

Claxton scored four points on 2-for-5 shooting (0-for-1 from three). He also had one rebound and one assist.

And some of Claxton’s Brooklyn teammates showed up for Monday’s game, since they had the day off:

Nic Claxton assigned to Long Island with Rodions Kurucs

Nic Claxton hasn’t seen game action since before Thanksgiving. He’ll finally get the chance to play on Monday in the G League.

At the start of the season, it looked like Nic Claxton was going to spend a good portion of the 2019-20 season with Brooklyn’s G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets. But DeAndre Jordan’s ankle injury on November 4 presented the rookie with the chance to contribute at the NBA level, putting off any possible assignment to the G League.

Claxton took full advantage of the opportunity at first, but his role has diminished as Jarrett Allen has continued to dominate down low, Jordan has found his groove and others are taking care of business at the four. As a result, Claxton hasn’t played since the Nets lost in Boston to the Celtics on Thanksgiving Eve.

While there’s some value in learning from his teammates in Brooklyn, the rookie needs reps. This is why Brooklyn assigned Claxton to Long Island on Monday, ahead of their game against Raptors 905.

Rodions Kurucs has been assigned to Long Island, as well.

Nets Report Card: First quarter of 2019-20 season

The Brooklyn Nets are through the first quarter of their 2019-20 schedule. Nets Wire assesses how the players have performed so far.

Following their loss to the Miami Heat on Sunday, the Brooklyn Nets are now 20 games into their 82-game season. While fans have gotten a taste of the next era of basketball in Brooklyn, there’s still plenty of room for this team to grow.

Some players have shown promise. Others have left something to be desired throughout the Nets’ 10-10 start to the 2019-20 season.

Here are Nets Wire’s grades for the individuals who have contributed to Brooklyn so far this year (with the exceptions of two-way players Henry Ellenson and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, who have only logged garbage time minutes.) (This, of course, excludes Kevin Durant and Wilson Chandler.)

Nic Claxton added to Nets injury report, probable against Heat

Brooklyn Nets rookie Nick Claxton is dealing with some hamstring soreness ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Miami Heat.

Nic Claxton did not appear in the second game of the home-and-home series against the Boston Celtics — which the Nets won — and could be a scratch for Sunday’s game with the Miami Heat. The Brooklyn Nets rookie has been listed as probable by the team due to left hamstring soreness.

With DeAndre Jordan healthy again after he missed Brooklyn’s games in Cleveland and Boston due to left ankle soreness and Jarrett Allen rolling, Kenny Atkinson may feel less inclined to call Claxton’s number due to the general nagging nature of hamstring injuries, even if his is minor.

Kyrie Irving (out, right shoulder impingement) did not participate in practice on Saturday because the Nets essentially held a walkthrough, according to Alex Schiffer of The Athletic.

Rodions Kurucs won’t be available for the Nets on Sunday either, though not because of injury. He will be on assignment with the Long Island Nets in the G League.

DeAndre Jordan questionable to face Celtics on Wednesday

Nets rookie Nic Claxton may have to fill in for DeAndre Jordan again in Boston.

The Brooklyn Nets made do without DeAndre Jordan on Monday and may have to again on Wednesday. The backup big man has been ruled questionable against the Boston Celtics due to left ankle soreness, which also kept him out of Monday’s matchup.

Jordan first injured the ankle back on November 4 and missed the ensuing game. It was the only game he’d missed prior to Monday’s matchup with the Cavaliers.

The Nets did just fine without Jordan in Cleveland, largely thanks to Jarrett Allen. Brooklyn’s starting center went off for 22 points and 21 rebounds against the Cavs. It was his seventh double-double of the season (a team-high) and his second 20-20 game of his career.

Nic Claxton was Brooklyn’s lone big man off the bench on Monday. He played 13 minutes, grabbed two rebounds, scored two points, had three assists and blocked three shots. The Nets rookie’s role on Monday was primarily to give Allen a break as needed, so the big man could keep up his consistent, strong play throughout the night.
