Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Toronto Maple Leafs sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Toronto Maple Leafs battle Sunday in Game 1 of the best-of-five Qualifying Series round at 8 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, one of two hub locations for the NHL restart. We analyze the Blue Jackets-Maple Leafs’ NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Blue Jackets vs. Maple Leafs: Projected starting goalies

Joonas Korpisalo/Elvis Merzlikins vs. Frederik Andersen

Korpisalo posted a 19-12-5 record, 2.60 goals against average and .911 save percentage across 35 starts and two relief appearances en route to his first All-Star nod. He was rolling along as the replacement to Sergei Bobrovsky, who left via free agency for the Florida Panthers. However, Korpisalo was injured in late December, missing nearly two months due to a knee injury. Merzlikins quickly became a star, posting a 13-9-8 record, 2.35 GAA and .923 SV% across 31 starts and two relief stints. Coach John Tortorella hasn’t tipped his hand on the starting netminder, but either way, the Jackets will have a pretty good one in the blue ice.

The Leafs have no such quandaries in their crease, as Andersen posted a 29-13-7 record, 2.85 GAA and .909 SV% with three shutouts in 52 starts. This team will go only as far as Andersen can take it in the postseason, and to date, that hasn’t been far. He is winless in three playoff series as a member of the Leafs. Andersen went 1-0-1 with a 2.46 GAA and .925 SV%, stopping 62 of 67 shots, in two regular-season meetings against the Jackets this season.

Prediction

Maple Leafs 4, Blue Jackets 2

Moneyline (ML)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-162) are heavy favorites on their home ice, although with no fans in the bubble, the advantage of being home is somewhat mitigated. Still, don’t think for one moment that playing in their own barn, dressing in their own room and being around their own amenities in their own town won’t play some sort of a factor … at least early on in these playoffs. The Jackets (+135) stunned the No. 1 seed Tampa Bay Lightning last season, sweeping them for Columbus’ first franchise playoff series win. Success will not be duplicated here, especially in Game 1.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Maple Leafs to win returns a profit of $6.17, while a $10 wager on the Blue Jackets results in a profit of $13.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The MAPLE LEAFS (-1.5, +155) are worth a small-unit wager on the puck line, although confidence is not terribly high. It might take an empty-net goal to win the puck-line bet, as Columbus is a solid defensive club with two strong, young netminders capable of getting hot. However, the Leafs boast two No. 1 caliber scoring lines, and it will be too much for the Jackets to handle.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U 6 – with -110 odds on both sides – is likely to result in a PUSH. I am expecting a 3-2 game late, with an empty-net goal as the final tally. This won’t be a defensive battle, but it won’t be a high-scoring game either. It will be just right, and exactly on the total. AVOID.

Montreal Canadiens vs. Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet Saturday in Game 1 of their best-of-five NHL Playoffs Qualifier Series round at 8 p.m. ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, one of two hub locations for the NHL restart. We analyze the Canadiens-Penguins’ NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Canadiens vs. Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Tristan Jarry/Matt Murray

Price posted a 27-25-6 record, 2.79 goals against average and .909 save percentage across his 58 starts before the pause button was pressed on the NHL regular season. Price was struggling a little bit before the break, though, losing four of his previous five starts, and winning just twice in regulation over his past 14 outings. Perhaps the rest will end up being a godsend for the veteran backstop. He allowed three goals on 27 shots in his most recent showing against the Pens on Feb. 14, but he is 1-1-1 with a 2.32 GAA and .929 SV% in three head-to-head meetings this season.

While Price is the unquestioned starter for the Habs, the goaltender picture in the Steel City is a bit muddled. To make matters even more complicated, a Game 1 starter hasn’t been announced, and both tendies made an appearance in the final preseason game. Jarry earned an All-Star bid, going 20-12-1 with a 2.43 GAA and .921 SV% across 31 starts and two relief appearances, but he dropped his last four starts before COVID struck. Murray’s overall body of work doesn’t look as impressive, although he was 20-11-5. He posted a 2.87 GAA and .899 SV% in his 38 starts but had won three of four before the break.

Canadiens vs. Penguins: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Saturday at 7:25 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Penguins 4, Canadiens 3

Moneyline (ML)

The PENGUINS (-167) have picked up wins in eight of their past 11 meetings against the Canadiens (+140), so Pittsburgh is probably the last team Montreal wanted to see in the bubble. Keep in mind, however, that the underdog has connected in five of the past six meetings. Don’t let that dissuade you from picking Pittsburgh, however, as it just has more firepower on offense.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on the Penguins (-167) to win returns a profit of $5.99, while a $10 wager on the Canadiens (+140) results in a profit of $14.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The PENGUINS (-1.5, +165) is a tempting play, and you might as well make a small-unit wager on the puck line if you’re feeling Pittsburgh in Game 1. Over the past 10 meetings in this series, Pittsburgh has won seven times. Of those seven wins, the Pens covered the puck line on six occasions.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-110) is a good play, as Price, Jarry and Murray have each had their moments this season. However, they’ve also had their streaks of poor play, and we could see the offenses roll it up early in this series. While the Under has cashed in four in a row, we have had a total of 65 goals across the previous 10 meetings, or 6.5 total goals per game.

Winnipeg Jets vs. Calgary Flames odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Winnipeg Jets vs. Calgary Flames sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets lock horns Saturday in Game 1 of their best-of-five NHL qualification round series at 10:30 p.m. ET at Rogers Place in Edmonton, AB, one of two hub locations for the NHL restart. We analyze the Jets-Flames sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Jets vs. Flames: Projected starting goalies

Connor Hellebuyck vs. David Rittich

Hellebuyck might be one of the more unheralded backstops in the NHL. The Michigander posted a 31-21-5 record with a 2.57 goals against average and .922 save percentage over 56 starts and two relief appearances. In his only showing against the Flames this season, Hellebuyck picked up a 2-1 overtime win, turning aside 29 of the 30 shots he faced.

The Czech-born Rittich posted a 24-17-6 record, 2.97 GAA and .907 SV% across his 48 starts this season while turning in two shutouts. He was on the short end of that 2-1 OT game in Winnipeg back on Oct. 26, but he looked sharp with 43 saves on 45 shots.

Jets vs. Flames: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Saturday at 8 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Flames 3, Jets 2

Moneyline (ML)

The FLAMES (-134) are expected to win here, as the favorite has connected in 10 of the previous 14 meetings in this head-to-head series. It will likely feel weird to the Flames, if they can win, as the game takes place on the ice of their heated provincial rivals, the Edmonton Oilers. One interesting thing to note here, the Jets (+110) have won the past two meetings. Neither side has won three in a row in this series since Calgary rattled off three straight wins from Dec. 23, 2015 to Nov. 12, 2016.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Flames (-134) to win returns a profit of $7.50, while a $10 wager on the Jets (+110) would result in a profit of $11.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Flames -1 (+120) look awfully good at this price. Keep in mind, however, that four of the past six in this series have been one-goal games, so looking for a winner by two or more goals is a tall order.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 6 (-110) is worth a look. This won’t be a defensive battle like the Heritage Classic, when these teams combined for just three goals, but it will be a lower-scoring affair with two good goalies between the pipes. Plus, the Under has cashed in five of the past six in this series, and seven of the previous nine.

New York Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s New York Rangers vs. Carolina Hurricanes sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Rangers and the Carolina Hurricanes battle Saturday in Game 1 of the best-of-five Qualifying Series round at noon ET at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, one of two hub locations for the NHL restart. We analyze the Rangers-Hurricanes NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes: Projected starting goalies

Igor Shesterkin vs. Petr Mrazek

Shesterkin made the start in Wednesday’s exhibition matchup against the New York Islanders. While bench boss David Quinn hasn’t officially named a starting backstop for Game 1, Shesterkin’s start on Wednesday is a strong indication that he will be in between the pipes against Carolina. He posted a stellar 10-2-0 record, 2.52 goals against average and .932 save percentage across 12 starts before the pause button was pressed on the season. That includes a 27-save performance in a 5-2 win in Raleigh back on Feb. 21.

As far as Mrazek is concerned, he is looking for another strong postseason run after his successful initial campaign with the Hurricanes a year ago. Like Shesterkin, Mrazek also started his team’s preseason affair against Washington. While he posted a 21-16-2 mark with a 2.69 GAA and .905 SV% across 40 appearances (38 starts), he was a dismal 0-3-0 with a 3.44 GAA and .872 SV% in three starts against the Blueshirts this season.

Rangers vs. Hurricanes: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated Friday at 2:20 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline (ML)

The RANGERS (+110) are a value as underdogs considering the fact they went 4-0 vs. the Hurricanes (-129) in the regular season. In fact, the Rangers have won 41 of the previous 55 meetings between these Metropolitan Division rivals, as the Original Six club just has some sort of power over the ‘Canes that cannot be properly explained.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rangers to win returns a profit of $11, while a $10 wager on the Hurricanes results in a profit of $7.75.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Rangers (+1.5, -250) are just too expensive on the puck line. Since they’re expected to win as short dogs, you don’t need the insurance anyway. The Hurricanes (-1.5, +200) are a great play on the puck line if you’re feeling they can break out of their funk against New York. A better bet, though a long shot, might be taking Adam Fox (+5000) as either the first goal scorer, or last goal scorer in the match. The Rangers beat Mrazek for nine goals this season, and Fox has two of them, the only multiple goal scorer for New York against the Carolina tendy this season.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 6 (-121) is the play. Defenses likely are going to dominate out of the gate while the offensive players work through some rubbery legs. Goaltenders should have the advantage early on before the players start to get their groove back. Look for plenty of lower-scoring games early on in the qualifiers.
