Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady is a co-founder of Autograph, an NFT platform highlighting Brady and other stars of the sports world. Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden is getting in the Autograph business with a new NFT drop called “Untouchable,” which is part of the James Harden: The Way of the Beard Collection. The drop occurred just hours before Harden and the Sixers took on the Raptors in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on Saturday. Brady took to Twitter to welcome Harden to the Autograph team.

The National Basketball Association …

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is digging deeper into Web 3, tipping off plans for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in a series of April 7 trademark filings made public Monday. The filing, submitted by the NBA for “The Association,” covers a laundry list of virtual items including “game tickets, game programs, trading cards, collectibles, memorabilia, jerseys” and even “memes relating to the field of basketball authenticated by non-fungible tokens.”

Each of the 1,336 Spurs NFTs is a digital re-creation of one of five hand-drawn play cards from Popovich combined with one of the five court designs that the Spurs have had during his reign. NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital identifiers that can be used to show ownership of digitized assets such as a photo, video or audio file. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank.

Mark Cuban on NBA Top Shot: ‘It’s great for our business’

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, an NFT and crypto advocate, shared via email his thoughts on NBA Top Shot and the company’s outlook. “I’m thrilled from an NBA perspective. It’s great for our business,” he said. “I think their challenge is serving multiple masters, their collectors, their speculators, the yin and yang of supporting developers of apps on their Flow blockchain and speculators in their token. “They have taken on a huge and difficult challenge. The reality is that Top Shot is their proof of concept for their blockchain, but they will need much more to sustain Flow. Which is why I think they have raised so much money. Running a blockchain is a very difficult business.”

“In February, Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot …

“In February, Dapper Labs’ NBA Top Shot generated $226 million in trades, accounting for 46 percent of the record NFT trading volume,” DappRadar wrote in its annual industry report published in December. “Although the next wave of Ethereum NFT collectibles caused the robust metrics, it is essential to highlight that Flow’s collection was a critical NFT catalyst for the rest of the year and a sign of things to come.” Overall, NFT projects across all categories did $21-$23 billion, per industry tracking reports, up from about $100 million in 2020 sales and trades.

That NBA Top Shot sales plummeted since the initial explosion isn’t a surprise. In fact, one company executive said that because NBA Top Shot was a beta test phase product, there were no real financial expectations. And because the NFT/crypto industry remains in its infancy, there still are no firm sales goals. “There is no plan. We still consider it a beta,” said Caty Tedman, Dapper Labs’ head of partnerships, in a phone interview last week. “We didn’t know what this industry would look like. … No one has a blueprint for this, so we’re trying to create a blueprint for ourselves.”

GameStop is reportedly getting into cryptocurrency and NFTs

The game retailer plans to launch an NFT marketplace.

GameStop, the video game and electronics retailer, is developing a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

A report from The Wall Street Journal  states that GameStop hired 20 new employees for its crypto division to build a digital marketplace for people to buy, sell, and trade NFTs along with other in-game items. Additionally, the company is reportedly partnering with two other cryptocurrency companies, which will help GameStop invest in video games with crypto technology.

NFTs are a hot-button topic in the video game industry. Ubisoft’s internal crypto platform resulted in one of the  most-disliked YouTube videos  ever. At the same time, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl  developer GSC Game World outright  canceled all NFT integration  mere days after announcing the feature. Valve Software  won’t even allow NFT games  on Steam.

Despite the frequent backlash to NFT announcements in video games from players, Reuters  reported that GameStop’s shares rose 27 percent. Evidence that the company is pleasing investors with this move. However, its stock is still down 59 percent from its January 2021 peak (Thanks, Kotaku).

GameStop’s NFT marketplace will not launch publicly until this fall, so time will tell if this business venture works out for them. There’s a good chance that  like Square Enix, many people that play video games won’t be all that interested.

Ubisoft’s NFT announcement video has nearly 10,000 dislikes on YouTube

Fans are furious about Ubisoft Quartz.

Ubisoft announced its  unique flavor of NFTs  Tuesday, which is going over terribly with fans! As in, thousands upon thousands of dislikes on YouTube.

Not that the negative reception should surprise anyone keeping up with the video game industry lately. In October, developer  Behaviour Interactive got mangled by Dead By Daylight  fans  for a similar practice. I like to imagine Ubisoft watched that whole mess and went: “yeah, we can top that no sweat,” and by golly, it sure looks like they have! Everyone loved punching down on Ghost Recon: Breakdown  to begin with, so at least the company is consistent.

By this point, Ubisoft is undoubtedly happy that YouTube removed the “dislike” button on videos. Otherwise, its quaint NFT announcement video would be showering in dislikes!

Thankfully, a nifty chrome extension called  Return YouTube Dislike  does precisely what its name implies! Let’s look at that announcement video again, then, shall we?

Goodness gracious, folks sure aren’t pleased with Ubisoft Quartz at all. It’ll likely shoot past 10,000 dislikes by the time you’re reading this too, surely.

The fun doesn’t stop there either, not one bit. Social media is overflowing with people furious over Ubisoft Quartz. Truly, it’s astounding how easy it is to set ablaze any sliver of goodwill with one little announcement. Some of the best reactions are below for your viewing pleasure.
