Behind Enemy Lines: 5 questions with Chiefs Wire

Chiefs Wire’s Charles Goldman gave us a preview of what to expect from the Kansas City Chiefs when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Los Angeles Chargers are set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the matchup, Chiefs Wire managing editor Charles Goldman spoke with us on Los Angeles’ opponent.

Here’s a look at five things to expect:

1. What can we expect for this year’s Chiefs offense?

Well, first off it’s going to be a little different than the 2019 version of their offense. The goal this year seems to be finding a more balanced approach on offense and not be so heavily reliant on explosive plays. Andy Reid thinks that Patrick Mahomes can be the best version of himself when he doesn’t have to be Superman each week. That’s not to say they don’t want him improvising and doing the things that make him a special talent, they just don’t want it to all fall on him. They added some pieces in LG Kelechi Osemele and RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire that give the run game the type of pizzazz that it hasn’t seen since early in the 2018 season before the Kareem Hunt situation. Also, Mahomes has said that he wants to do a better job taking what the defense gives him. That means recognizing when the shot play will be there, but also feeling comfortable checking it down to his army of playmakers.

2. The linebacker and defensive back group appeared to be exploited in the season opener. Do you expect that to be an issue again this Sunday?

I would say you’re spot on with the linebacker group, they’re easily the worst unit on this team. The three starters in Anthony Hitchens, Damien Wilson and Ben Niemann were the three lowest-graded defenders for the Chiefs in Week 1 according to PFF. The only good news out of that group is the 2018 third-round draft pick Dorian O’Daniel finally made an appearance and played well. As for the secondary, they were actually really impressive in Week 1. Rookie CB L’Jarius Sneed was the standout as he had a pair of passes defended and an interception. In garbage time the defense let up a couple of touchdowns. Tyrann Mathieu set the tone after the game, saying that he was, “pissed off.” Really, everyone echoed that sentiment this week in practice, so I’d expect a better performance through four quarters. Rashad Fenton will be starting opposite Sneed, you might remember him from the Mexico City game last year as he had a big interception in that game.

3. What area/position of the Chiefs could determine the outcome of this game?

I think it’s going to come down to the pass rush and containing Tyrod Taylor for Kansas City. They pressured Texans QB Deshaun Watson 24 times in Week 1, that’s 10 more pressures than the next closest team had in the first week of the season. If they can force the Chargers into some third-and-long situations it’ll be a long night for Taylor. Alternatively, they’ll need to keep a close eye on how they go about pressuring Taylor. We all know that he can gash defenses with his legs and he’s at his best when he can make plays outside of the pocket.

4. Who is an under-the-radar Chief that Chargers fans should know about?

Undrafted free agent defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who played for the D-II Missouri S&T Miners. Wharton played just 16 snaps in Week 1, but notched a pressure and two run stops on the day. He lined up directly over the center a few times, so given that Mike Pouncey is on injured reserve, I think he’s someone who could make a big impact this week.

5. Score prediction?

I went with 34-17 Chiefs in my prediction over at Chiefs Wire. I thought that Thursday Night Football between the Bengals and Browns this week was a big indictment of the Chargers offense and their Week 1 performance against Cincinnati. I think they’ll definitely get some chunk plays in the ground game, but dropping back to pass against Kansas City is going to be tough, even with a few backups in the secondary.

Ravens activate S jordan Richards from practice squad for Week 2 vs. Texans

For the second consecutive week, the Baltimore Ravens have brought up safety Jordan Richards from the practice squad for gameday.

Under the new collective bargaining agreement, NFL teams are able to bring up one player from their practice squad on gameday. The Baltimore Ravens took advantage of that new rule by elevating safety Jordan Richards for the second-consecutive week, according to the transactions list.

Richards was brought in last season as a special teams ace and that’s the same role he carried last week. Richards played on 71% of possible special teams snaps without registering a single snap on defense. However, with safety being a little thinner following the departure of Earl Thomas before the season, Richards can also fill in there if necessary, carrying a little extra versatility into a gameday.

Thew new rule has proven useful for Baltimore to be able to keep around a niche player without having to eat up valuable roster space. It will be interesting to see if the Ravens switch up their strategy when gunner Chris Moore returns from a broken finger in the next few weeks.

Non-Browns Sunday Week 2 watch guide

Good day for Browns fans to get caught up on what’s going on around the NFL

One of the side benefits of the Cleveland Browns playing on Thursday night is the ability to focus on some of the rest of the NFL on Sunday. It’s a good Sunday to get better acquainted with what’s going on with other team, including the Browns’ next opponent.

First up, a look around the AFC North…

Denver at Pittsburgh – The Steelers look to go 2-0 against the winless Broncos. Denver couldn’t capitalize on several Titans mistakes in its Week 1 loss and now faces a Steelers team that rolled on Monday night. The Broncos don’t have Von Miller and they don’t have much of an offensive line. Those two make the Steelers 6.5-point favorites at BetMGM. The visitors could be lucky to stay within double that figure.

Baltimore at Houston – The Ravens hope to build off their dominating win over the Browns in Week 1, while the Texans are aiming to recover from getting waxed by the Chiefs in the season opener. If nothing else, the Lamar Jackson vs. Deshaun Watson matchup should be a fun one to watch.

Washington at Arizona – The Football Team will be in Cleveland in Week 3, but first they have a difficult road game against the 1-0 Cardinals. This game has a late-afternoon kickoff, so if you want to do some advance scouting it’s a good opportunity. It’s also a good chance to check out No. 2 overall pick Chase Young, who was a monster in Washington’s Week 1 win over the Eagles.

Atlanta at Dallas – The Browns visit the Cowboys in Week 4, so another chance for a little look ahead at an upcoming Browns foe. Both these teams lost in Week 1 in relatively disappointing fashion. If you watch, pay attention to the Dallas passing attack. Their banged-up OL isn’t what it used to be, but this is the best receiving corps Dak Prescott has ever had.

Carolina at Tampa Bay – Tom Brady in a Buccaneers uniform? Yep, and he should have a big day against the Panthers defense that got lit up by the Raiders in Week 1. Brady didn’t play well in Tampa Bay’s loss to New Orleans last week either, but the young Panthers defense isn’t the same caliber as the Saints.

Texans promote RB C.J. Prosise to active roster against the Ravens

The Houston Texans have promoted running back C.J. Prosise from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Week 2 versus the Baltimore Ravens.

The Houston Texans are going to lean on veteran experience in the offensive backfield as they take on the Baltimore Ravens.

The club announced Saturday that running back C.J. Prosise has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster for the Texans’ tilt with the Ravens at 3:25 p.m. Sunday in the NRG Stadium opener.

On Monday, coach Bill O’Brien said running back Duke Johnson, who sustained an ankle injury in the Week 1 loss at the Kansas City Chiefs, was a “long-shot” to play against Baltimore. Throughout the week, Johnson stacked three consecutive days of practice, but was limited each day.

The Texans have running back Buddy Howell on the active roster, but his primary role is special teams. The club could rely on undrafted rookie running back Scottie Phillips or fullback Cullen Gillaspia behind starting running back David Johnson. However, Prosise gives them the veteran presence necessary to fill in for Duke Johnson, should he not be able to go against the Ravens.

Ravens CB Marcus Peters vs. Texans WR Will Fuller V is the key matchup of Week 2

Baltimore Ravens CB Marcus Peters will be matched up against Houston Texans deep threat WR Will Fuller V in Week 2.

When the Baltimore Ravens take on the Houston Texans this Sunday, a highly anticipated matchup will go down. It’s not between quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Lamar Jackson like you might be thinking, however.

Ravens cornerback Marcus Peters will be looking to lock down Texans’ big-play threat wide receiver Will Fuller V. Baltimore’s shutdown corner has a tall task defending a receiver who is in much need of a standout 2020 campaign and more than capable of delivering on it when healthy.

Eyes are on the 26-year-old Fuller after the shocking trade which sent DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona early this past offseason. This move put an abrupt end to what was supposed to be a dynamic deep threat duo of Hopkins and Fuller. With Hopkins now out of the picture, Houston is counting on Fuller to live up to being the 21st pick Houston used to select him back in 2016.

In order for Fuller to live up to his hype, he first needs to stay healthy. He hasn’t played a full season yet, missing five games last season and 22 over his four-year career. “If I can play 16 games, the sky is the limit,” said Fuller, per “Around the NFL” writer Kevin Patra. Despite being the obvious No. 2 receiver on the depth chart, the Texans averaged 5.6 more points-per-game when he has been on the field. Fuller enters this game healthy, having appeared on the injury report Friday for a non-injury reason.

Fuller was impressive in the Thursday night opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, catching 8-of-10 targets for 112 yards. He’s clearly the favorite target of Watson as he received double the targets of any other player on the offense — Brandin Cooks had the second-highest targets with only five. Fuller is sure to have a similar workload in this Week 2 matchup, especially if Houston has to play catch-up with Baltimore.

For Baltimore, a major key to their defense is the ability of Marcus Peters to matchup against an opponent’s No. 1 wideout. The Ravens acquired Peters in from the Los Angeles Rams at the trade deadline last year. Only having to give up linebacker Kenny Young and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, adding a top-five corner was an easy decision for Baltimore. Peters got to work quickly repaying the Ravens, earning First-Team All-Pro honors.

Peters’ teammates have loved what he has brought since arriving last season. Fellow cornerback Marlon Humphrey raved about what he’s learned from Peters.

“He sees it a lot different than the average corner,” Humphrey said in August. “He’s able to see things as it kind of comes. He’s really good at film study and different things. Me trying to turn on that, being more of a student of the game, leaning on him to add something to my game I think is the biggest thing. That’s what I think has led him to be so successful; mainly just the film study and being able to see things way before they happen.”

Humphrey’s praise was more than just kind words, however. Peters accounted for three interceptions in his limited time with Baltimore last season, including two returned for touchdowns. One came against Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson while the other was against Cincinnati Bengals’ Ryan Finley. Both plays required Peters to read the quarterback’s eyes in order to jump the out routes, giving him a clear path along the sidelines for the score.

Peters has continued his impressive play into this season. Despite Baltimore releasing safety Earl Thomas, Peters and the Ravens’ defense didn’t skip a beat in Week 1. They demolished quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns 38-6. Peters and the secondary made life miserable for Cleveland’s top wideout, Odell Beckham Jr, holding him to just three catches for 22 yards.

The Ravens shift gears now to a Texans team which is in danger of falling to 0-2 on the season. Knowing both of these teams seek to put points on the board with explosive plays, you can bet Peters will have to be at the top of his game for the Ravens to pull out the victory.

The matchup between Peters and Fuller is set to be an interesting subplot to this Week 2 game. The Texans can’t afford to start the season 0-2, and Fuller is looking to put himself in position for his first 1,000-yard season. If Peters and the secondary can shut down Fuller the way they did to Beckham in Week 1, the Ravens could be in for another blowout victory and smooth sailing to a 2-0 start.

Monster games from Myles Garrett, Nick Chubb top the Browns’ PFF scores from Week 2

Garrett scored in elite range from his dominance against the Bengals

Thursday night’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals saw great performances from several players on the Cleveland Browns. None were greater than Myles Garrett.

The defensive end had a monster game against the Bengals’ offensive line. As a result, Garrett earned the top Browns game grade from Pro Football Focus.

Garrett graded out with a 90.1 overall grade from PFF. Nearly all of it came from his relentless success as a pass rusher. PFF charted Garrett with nine total hurries on Bengals QB Joe Burrow, including his strip-sack near the Bengals goal line that set up a touchdown.

The rest of the top five Browns in PFF’s defensive grading:

  • DE Adrian Clayborn – 76.5
  • CB Terrance Mitchell – 76.2
  • CB Denzel Ward – 76.0
  • DT Jordan Elliott – 73.3

On offense, running back Nick Chubb led the way with his 82.5 grade. PFF charted Chubb with five avoided tackles and an average of 4.5 yards after contact on his 24 rush attempts.

The rest of the top five is rounded out by those who helped pave the way for Chubb’s 124-yard outing and kept Baker Mayfield from getting touched even once all night.

  • LG Joel Bitonio – 78.8 including an 86.6 pass-blocking score
  • WR KhaDarel Hodge – 78.5
  • FB Andy Janovich – 78.3
  • RG Wyatt Teller – 76.2

The Texans were horrendous in pass blocking in Week 1

The Houston Texans were almost dead last in the NFL in pass block win rate in Week 1. They will have to improve against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Houston Texans pass blocking was hardly top notch. In fact, it may not have been worthy enough to even record a notch.

Quarterback Deshaun Watson took four sacks as the Texans lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 34-20 in Week 1 at Arrowhead Stadium.

According to Seth Walder from ESPN, the Texans were the penultimate team when it came to worst pass block win rate, winning 37.9% of the time. Only the New York Giants were worse at 33.3%.

The results are enough to believe the offensive line needs a little more work together, even if they are the first line to return all five starters for the first time since 2011.

Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil isn’t going to blame the Texans’ pass blocking issues in Week 1 on the lack of preseason games.

“Not having a preseason game, I really don’t think it mattered as much because we had training camp, but that’s just my opinion,” Tunsil said. “We’ve just got to come out there and execute the game plan. I don’t know. I don’t think the preseason really affected us as much. We’ve just got to come out there with a better attitude.”

Houston will need to fix their offensive line issues in a hurry. The Baltimore Ravens visit NRG Stadium in Week 2 blitzed 23 times last week, the second-most in the league.
