Commanders’ Shaka Toney suspended at least 1 year for gambling violation

Shaka Toney was one of Washington’s seventh-round picks in 2021.

The NFL announced suspensions for several NFL players Friday for gambling violations. Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney was among those suspended.

Toney, 25, is entering his third season out of Penn State. He was one of three players suspended indefinitely — at least one year — for betting on games during the 2022 NFL season.

Toney can apply for reinstatement after the 2023 season.

A seventh-round pick in 2021, Toney has played in 26 career games for Washington, recording 16 total tackles and 1.5 sacks. Toney was a reserve defensive end but contributed on special teams.

Toney’s suspension likely doesn’t change anything regarding Washington’s draft plans. He wasn’t guaranteed to make the 2023 roster, and with multiple defensive ends slated for free agency after next season, the Commanders are expected to target at least one pass rusher in next week’s 2023 NFL draft.

Deshaun Watson: ‘I’m moving on with my career’, maintains his innocence

Browns QB Deshaun Watson: ‘I’m moving on with my career’, maintains his innocence of the sexual misconduct charges

Deshaun Watson faced the media in Cleveland shortly after the revelation of a settlement between the NFL and NFLPA that results in an 11-game suspension for the Browns quarterback.

Watson began with an opening statement,

“I’m very grateful to the NFL and the NFLPA for this disciplinary to be to a close, to an ending, and to have some clarity. I’m looking forward to just moving forward with my career and being able to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

Watson fielded several questions from reporters on scene, and he reiterated his innocence of the sexual misconduct charges leveled against him. When asked if he wished to apologize to the women who accused him of sexual assault, he did not

“I’ve always been able to stand on my innocence, and always said I never assaulted or disrespected anyone,” Watson declared from Browns headquarters in Berea. “But at the same point, I have to continue to push forward with my life & career.”

When asked why he agreed to a settlement despite his insistence of innocence, Watson responded,

“I’m moving on with my career and my life. I’m going to continue to stand on my innocence. Just because the settlement and things like that happened, it doesn’t mean that a person is guilty.”

Watson did offer a written statement as well, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Breaking down the full details of the Deshaun Watson settlement with the NFL

Breaking down the full details of the Deshaun Watson settlement with the NFL

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson will be suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 season. A settlement agreed upon between the NFL and the NFLPA on Thursday sets the final punishment for the Browns quarterback.

The settlement ends months of speculation and back-and-forth between the league, Watson, the NFLPA and various mediators. It’s an increase from the original suspension recommendation by Judge Sue L. Robinson of six games, a finding the NFL announced it would appeal.

This settlement ends any appeal or further action on the Watson ordeal up to this point.

Here are some of the key details to know about the settlement and how it impacts the Browns, Watson, and the multiple women who accused him of sexual misconduct while the quarterback was a member of the Houston Texans.

Deshaun Watson, NFL reach settlement at an 11-game suspension

Watson will be suspended for the first 11 games and fined $5 million according to several reports

After months of speculation, hearings and appeals, we finally have a final decision in the Deshaun Watson suspension saga. On Thursday, the NFL and Watson’s representation agreed to a settlement that establishes the Browns quarterback will be suspended for 11 games. Initial reports of the details have been corroborated, per Pro Football Talk.

The agreement ends any further sanctions from the NFL, which opted to file an appeal on judge Sue L. Robinson’s initial recommendation of a 6-game suspension for Watson. All the punishment stems from sexual misconduct allegations filed by over 25 female massage therapists against Watson while the quarterback was a member of the Houston Texans. Robinson’s ruling came over a month ago, and the appellate hearing was slated to be adjudictated by former New Jersey attorney general Peter Harvey.

Watson will also be fined $5 million dollars, per numerous reports.

NFL releases statement on the Deshaun Watson suspension

NFL releases statement on the 6-game Deshaun Watson suspension leaving the door open for the league to appeal the decision

It did not take long for the NFL to offer up an official response to Monday morning’s ruling on the Deshaun Watson suspension. The league left open the possibility of appealing Judge Sue L. Robinson’s decision to levy a 6-game suspension for the Browns quarterback.

In their statement, the NFL thanked Robinson for finding that revealed “multiple violations” of thr league’s personal conduct policy.

As for any potential appeal, the NFL left the door open,

“The league is reviewing Judge Robinson’s imposition of a six-game suspension and will make a determination on next steps.”

Watson and the NFLPA have already announced they will not appeal Robinson’s decision.

From the league’s press release:

Deshaun Watson suspension: Everything we know

Deshaun Watson suspension: Everything we know

Here are a few key things to know about Watson’s suspension, the impact on the Browns, financials and more.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has been suspended for the first six games of the 2022 NFL season. The long-awaited decision from arbiter Sue L. Robinson officially came down on Monday after months of speculation and debate.

There are myriad wrinkles and ripples to the suspension. Here are a few key things to know about Watson’s suspension, the impact on the Browns, financials and more.

Deshaun Watson to meet with NFL officials this week

The meeting between Watson and the NFL could mean an end to the league’s investigation

The long saga involving Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson and his potential suspension for multiple allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct could be coming to a close.

According to Josina Anderson, Watson is set to meet with the NFL in Texas later this week. The meeting presumably centers around the 22 civil lawsuits filed by women in the Houston area who allege that Watson engaged in unwanted sexual situations with them while he was the quarterback for the Houston Texans. Watson has consistently denied all the allegations, and two separate grand juries in Texas refused to indict him on any charges.

Watson still faces the lawsuits in civil court. As for the NFL, it has run a concurrent investigation to determine whether Watson violated any league policies and if he’s subject to possible disciplinary action. That could include a suspension of undetermined length.

The Texans traded Watson to the Browns earlier this offseason after dealing with the situation in 2021 by keeping the Pro Bowl QB inactive for every game and separated from the team. The NFL generally concludes its investigations by meeting with the player and going over their findings, so this could bring the drama to an end quite soon.

Watson is also slated to host his new teammates in the Bahamas this week.

NFL reinstates Lions DE Jashon Cornell from his suspension

The Lions have until Thursday to decide what to do with Cornell

Jashon Cornell is back and eligible to be with the Detroit Lions this week. The second-year defensive end is no longer under suspension by the NFL.

Cornell was lifted off the suspended list by the league on Monday, a day after the Lions lost to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. He was serving a three-game suspension for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

The league granted the Lions a special exemption until Thursday before activating Cornell. That move will require another move to the 53-man active roster. Detroit does not have to use that full time allowance, however.

Cornell missed his entire rookie season in 2020 after tearing his Achilles early in training camp. The 2020 seventh-round pick from Ohio State showed some ability to pressure the passer in both training camp and preseason this summer.

Ex-Lions WR Jonathan Adams suspended 6 games by the NFL

Adams washed out of Detroit quickly despite having a solid rookie minicamp as an undrafted WR from Arkansas State

Jonathan Adams didn’t last long with the Detroit Lions this offseason. The undrafted wideout was released by the team before training camp despite a fairly impressive showing during the Lions’ rookie minicamp. And now any hope of Adams firing up his NFL chances have taken another hit.

Adams has been suspended by the NFL for the first six games of the 2021 NFL season. The NFL revealed the suspension on Friday’ transaction list.

Adams is currently a free agent and has not signed with anyone since his hasty departure from Detroit. Once expected to compete for a legit chance to make the Lions at their thin WR spot, things have gone in the other direction for the former Arkansas State standout.
