Where the Ravens’ salary cap stands at the start of free agency

With the legal tampering period starting today, here’s where the Baltimore Ravens’ salary cap stands. Could they go after big free agents?

The legal tampering period has officially begun, meaning teams and free agents can start negotiating. While deals for unrestricted free agents can’t be formally signed until free agency begins on March 17 at 4:00 p.m. ET, many of the league’s top free agents are likely to agree to terms ahead of time, effectively taking them off the market. With the first 48 hours being so important, how much cap space do the Baltimore Ravens have to spend?

According to the NFLPA’s public salary cap report, the Ravens have $20,942,890 available, prior to signing guard Kevin Zeitler early Monday morning. Baltimore has several key needs this offseason, including finding help at outside linebacker, repairing their interior offensive line, and grabbing more weapons for quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Now, it’s important to note that Baltimore will need to save set money aside to sign their draft picks and emergency funds for midseason acquisitions, so they won’t be able to use that full amount. However, the Ravens also have other players they could cut and others they can restructure to free up more cap space if they absolutely need to.

While you’ll hear about the average cost per year of the contracts signed in the coming days and months, teams can structure deals to fit within their cap constraints. What is most typical, and what we’re likely to see a lot this offseason due to the decrease in salary cap space, is having a contract’s cap hit be lower in certain years in exchange for more expensive years later. This offseason has also seen a lot of contracts with voidable years to help spread out signing bonuses, effectively lowering a player’s cap hit over the life of the contract but putting up a little bit of dead money after the contract would be voided.

Things are likely about to go crazy but the Ravens are in a pretty good spot. Don’t fret if Baltimore doesn’t join the frenzy to begin with, but look for better value deals after the first wave of free agency is over.

Franchise tag deadline pushed back to same day as legal tampering period

The franchise tag deadline has been moved back again and will snowfall on the same day as the legal tampering period.

After pushing the franchise tag deadline back two days to Thursday, March 12 last month, the NFL and NFL Players Association have decided to push the deadline back once again. Per ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the deadline will now fall on Monday, March 16 (11:59 AM EST), which is the same day that the legal tampering period begins.

This news comes after the NFLPA decided to push back the voting deadline towards accepting or declining the new proposed Collective Bargaining Agreement from the NFL and its owners on Monday. Instead of it being on Thursday as originally planned, the deadline will now fall on Saturday, March 14. There have been players to come out and publicly support the new labor deal, while others have voiced their displeasure for it, so the extended time will hopefully lead to some cohesion.

As pointed out by Pro Football Talk, this move makes sense with the players still deciding on how they will vote because a new CBA could change the rules for pending free-agents. A prime example is the situation unfolding with the Dallas Cowboys, who have two notable stars who want new deals in quarterback Dak Prescott and receiver Amari Cooper. Under the current CBA, teams have the ability to use both the franchise and transition tags in 2020 and that would be handy for Jerry Jones to keep both off the open market.

As many are aware, the Jags elected to use their franchise tag on defensive end Yannick Ngakoue, who came out to say he didn’t want a long-term deal with the Jags last week.

As mentioned above, the legal tampering period is scheduled to begin directly after the franchise tag deadline. The new league year and free-agency   will begin a few days later on Wednesday, March 18 at 4 p.m. ET.
