Bengals reveal coaching hires — and one comes with a twist

A new role for the Bengals coaching staff.

The Cincinnati Bengals made it official with two defensive coaching hires on Monday.

One of those, new defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, was already known to be on his way to town alongside new coordinator Al Golden. Mike Hodges as linebackers coach is the other announced addition.

It’s Montogmery, though, who arrives with more titles than anticipated in a rather unique twist for the Bengals.

Per the team’s announcement, Montgomery will also serve as the defensive run game coordinator. That’s a title that isn’t common for the Bengals coaching staff and might present a shift in how responsibilities get doled out among assistants.

Montogmery certainly carries familiarity with the task. He held the same role in Green Bay for a few years and before extensive coaching experience in various defensive front positions, played defensive tackle at Iowa and had a brief stint in the pros.

If nothing else, the slight changeup is notable as the Bengals hope to fix serious issues against the run while also properly developing high-end prospects like Myles Murphy in the trenches.

Cincinnati Bengals announce Al Golden as next defensive coordinator

The Bengals make it official with Al Golden.

The Cincinnati Bengals made it official with new defensive coordinator Al Golden on Thursday.

“Al is a very highly regarded coach, and we are excited to welcome him back to the Bengals as defensive coordinator,” head coach Zac Taylor said in the announcement. “He understands football at every level and has had great success as a coordinator, position coach and head coach. Al has a great football mind and will bring a smart, physical, aggressive approach to our defense.”

Golden was the predictable end result of a brief search for Lou Anarumo’s replacement by Zac Taylor. His past work as a linebackers coach in Cincinnati for the 2020 and 2021 seasons made him an obvious favorite, with Notre Dame’s trip to the national title game the only thing holding up the process.

After droves of issues developing younger players over the last few seasons, the Bengals hope Golden is the answer while the team sits in win-now mode.

Bengals’ approach to hiring Al Golden draws mixed reviews

Is this a good hire, but also “same old Bengals” territory, too?

The Cincinnati Bengals plan to hire a new defensive coordinator with Al Golden this week, yet the process has come under fire.

While Zac Taylor and the Bengals’ familiarity with Golden and vice versa is a good thing and might be the right fit right now, it’s hard to blame those onlookers who feel that the process itself was an issue.

Taylor and the Bengals, after all, like to stick with coaches they know and smaller coaching trees, as opposed to looking outside the organization. Golden had already coached in Cincinnati under Taylor, and the fact he’s still neighbors with Taylor is a talking point making the rounds.

It doesn’t help the perception of the hiring that the Bengals appeared to have one of the hottest coaching openings in some time on a likely Super Bowl contender, should the defense improve. Taylor and Co. responded by, at least publicly, interviewing just a few candidates, none of whom seemed to have an actual legitimate shot at the job, should Golden want it.

Hence, the long list of reactions, which, when summarized, amount to it could work out great, but the process was “same old Bengals.”

Cincinnati Bengals tab former Patriots coach as DL coach in 2025

The Bengals will have a new DL coach in 2025.

The Cincinnati Bengals will have a new defensive line coach arriving alongside new defensive coordinator Al Golden.

According to The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr., Jerry Montgomery is the pick to lead that positional group under Golden.

Montgomery last served as the defensive line coach with the New England Patriots and will enter his 20th season overall as a coach. He spent nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers before last year’s stint in Foxborough.

In addition to a new offensive line coach, the Bengals have now completely remade the groups in charge of the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Montgomery will find himself tasked with attempting to get development out of former first-rounder Myles Murphy, plus sophomores Kris Jenkins Jr. and McKinnley Jackson — and whoever else the Bengals might add between free agency and the draft.

Bengals’ search for defensive coordinator takes important next step

Zac Taylor and the Bengals get closer to finding their newest hire.

Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals haven’t done much to hide their intentions when it comes to the team’s next defensive corodsintoer.

The transparent, narrow search to fill the position has always obviously centered on Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden. Those plans took another step on Monday night.

In a super-obvious postgame report after the national title game, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Golden has “emerged” as the top candidate (in the same way the sun “emerges” each morning, anyway).

Golden has repeatedly shot down questions about taking the job with Taylor and the Bengals, but only while attempting to keep focus on Notre Dame. Early in the process, the Bengals interviewed other names, but they felt like a formality.

With Golden now free to wrap things up with the Fighting Irish, the timetable, as explained by The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr.:

Golden left a very positive impression on the Bengals during his recent run with the team, which included coaching up linebackers such as Germaine Pratt.

Considering developing talent has been an issue on that side of the ball in recent years, getting him back is an attempt to right that side of the ship.

Barring a shocker, this is just a matter of time.

MMA spin, names like Lesnar and Velasquez make Bengals OL coach interesting hire

Some interesting facts about the new Bengals OL coach.

Upon arrival with the Cincinnati Bengals, new offensive line coach Scott Peters doesn’t have a jaw-dropping resume as a former player, nor a multi-page resume like some of the other coaching hires around the league.

But he does have one of the most unique backgrounds possible for the job.

After his playing days, Peters went to the world of MMA and founded the Tip of the Spear Academy.

The rest is notable, to say the least, via Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com:

Peters, 46, a former NFL guard and center and one-time trainer of UFC champions Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez, never played in the AFC North during stints with five teams. But he arrives with plenty of Bengals ties.

Former Bengals offensive line coach Jim McNally, is one of many to praise the move:

Footage of this in action isn’t hard to find either, it seems:

Bengals fans are a long way from finding out if this unique approach works. But there’s something interesting in thinking about, say, a 6’8″, 340-pound Amarmius Mims suddenly getting much better at striking on the field, right?

Bengals praised for OL coach pick ahead of key offseason

Some major reactions to the big Bengals coaching news.

The Cincinnati Bengals brought on new offensive line coach Scott Peters to replace Frank Pollack ahead of a critical 2025 offseason.

Peters, who has connections to Bill Callahan (who has connections to Zac Taylor) has established himself as a rising mind in the NFL.

The reactions to Cincinnati’s hire tell the whole story.

Peters will oversee the development of first-round tackle Amarius Mims, plus likely be the main person responsible for helping to find and develop two new starting guards in front of Joe Burrow this offseason.

Most reactions suggest that Taylor and Co. made a good choice for such a daunting task.

Cincinnati Bengals announce multiple coaching hires

The Bengals add to the coaching staff.

The Cincinnati Bengals have addressed the offensive line coaching positions with two hires.

Monday, the Bengals announced the hire of Scott Peters as offensive line coach, with Michael McCarthy coming along as assistant line coach.

Peters was the top assistant in Cleveland recently under Bill Callahan and served as line coach in New England last year.

“It’s my favorite division in all the NFL with the competitive nature and the rivalries,” said Peters. “I’m excited to be here in Cincinnati and doing it again from a different perspective.”

Peters replaces Frank Pollack and will be tasked with revamping the running game, improving weak spots like the interior and developing first-rounder Amarius Mims.

Zac Taylor’s Bengals make more changes to coaching staff

The Bengals continue to make changes.

The Cincinnati Bengals, under head coach Zac Taylor, will make more changes than initially thought to the coaching staff this offseason.

Right after the season ended, the Bengals fired defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and a handful of other coaches.

Now, WLWT’s Charlie Clifford reported that senior defense assistant Mark Duffner and defensive quality control coach Louie Cioffi are also on the way out.

The news leaves just a handful of defensive coaches on staff right now, which could change further depending on what the team’s next coordinator wants to do.

While the Bengals have set up several interviews with top defensive coordinator candidates, the biggest name they’re in contact with could indeed want to bring on an entire new staff of his own.
