Random thoughts on the Steelers first depth chart

Here are a few things that stood out about the Steelers first depth chart.

Earlier in the week, the Pittsburgh Steelers released their first depth chart of the season. We’ve already broken down the offense as well as the defense but let’s talk about a few random things that really stood out.

We aren’t shocked that Russell Wilson is still listed as first team despite his injury or how well Justin Fields has practiced. We do think the competition between them is real thanks to Wilson’s injury but understand no matter how well Fields plays, he’s got an uphill climb

It was great seeing an undrafted rookie as the starter. Cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr. has taken full advantage of Cameron Sutton’s suspension and an injury to Grayland Anderson to seize the starting nickel cornerback spot.

Speaking of rookies, Bishop if the only one of the Steelers’ who made the cut. That’s not to say guys like offensive tackle Troy Fautanu and Zach Frazier won’t eventually be there but as of now, it’s all about working to win those spots.

Another spot we expect to change is at outside linebacker. Right now Jeremiah Moon is the backup to T.J. Watt while veteran Markus Golden is the third team behind Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig. The Steelers just re-signed Golden but he will end up being a primary rotational player at edge.

Still having a fullback depth chart is so retro of the Steelers. The team even has two players listed. Connor Heyward should be a bigger part of the offense and some of that could come in the backfield. But a fullback? Would the Steelers consider using a roster spot on a guy like Jack Colletto?
