2 Steelers cornerbacks make NFL Top 100 All-Time Team

The Steelers have had two of the greatest cornerbacks of all time on their team.

The NFL Network continued putting out their list of the 100 best players of all time on Friday. They have put out the list by positional unit and the latest groups were the defensive backs. The Pittsburgh Steelers landed two cornerbacks on the list with Mel Blount and Rod Woodson.

Blount spent 14 seasons with the Steelers and was the anchor in the secondary during the great Steelers teams of the 1970s. Blount’s physicality has never been matched by a cornerback and his style forced the league to make rule changes to help protect wide receivers. Blount went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1989.

Woodson was a completely different style of player as opposed to Blount but was truly elite in his own right. Woodson dominated multiple facets of the game including as a cornerback, safety and return man. Woodson spent 10 of his 17 seasons with the Steelers and went into the Hall of Fame in 2009.

Several Steelers including DT Joe Greene on NFL 100 All-Time team

The Steelers are well-represented on the NFL 100 All-Time team.

The NFL Network is putting out its All-Time team in honor their 100th season in 2019. So far, the NFL Network has announced the running backs, linebackers and defensive lineman. The Steelers were shut out among the running backs but are scoring well on the defensive side of the football.

Defensive tackle Joe Greene joins linebacker Jack Ham and Jack Lambert as some of the greatest at their respective positions of all time. They also named former Steelers head coach Chuck Noll as of the coaches of the team.

Greene was drafted No. 4 overall by the Steelers in 1969. His addition was the catalyst for what turned into one of the greatest sports dynasties of all time. Greene spent all 13 of his NFL seasons with the Steelers. Greene, along with Ham, Lambert and Noll won four Super Bowls in the 1970s with Pittsburgh.

The NFL Network will continue to announce position groups and we expect to see more Steelers from those great 70s teams to make the list.

Ray Lewis named to the NFL 100 All-Time Team

Ray Lewis is the first of 12 linebackers to be named to the NFL All-Time Team.

As part of the ongoing celebration surrounding the 100th season of the NFL, an All-Time Team is in the process of being named. This team of 100 players will contain the very best of the best to have played the game in the last century. On Monday night the identity of the first linebacker to make the team was revealed and it was one of the greatest Ravens of all, Ray Lewis.

Lewis spent his entire 17-year career with Baltimore after he became their second-ever draft pick in 1996. He won two Super Bowls, the first following the 2000 season and the second in his last game in the NFL after the 2012 campaign. He took home the Super Bowl MVP in 2000.

Lewis is arguably the best linebacker to ever play the game, even before this list came out. He won Defensive Player of the Year award twice during his career and led the league in tackles three times. Since the NFL began counting combined tackles as a stat, no player has amassed more than Lewis. His 2,055 are 24 more than the next closest player on the list.

In addition to his tackles, Lewis finished his regular-season career with 99 tackles for loss, 41.5 sacks, 96 passes defended (a stat only recorded since 1999) and 31 interceptions. Oh and don’t forget 19 forced fumbles.

Lewis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His being named to the All-Time Team is just another honor for one of the greatest players to wear the Ravens uniform.
