We know the Falcons were embarrassed by the Eagles in Week 1 by a score of 32-6, but how did the other three teams fare?

All four NFC South teams technically opened up the 2021 season at home, although the New Orleans Saints had to play their game in Jacksonville due to the damage caused by Hurricane Ida.

We know the Falcons were embarrassed by the Eagles in Week 1 by a score of 32-6, but how did the other three teams fare?

Jets 0 0 8 6 14
Panthers 0 16 0 3 19

The Panthers got off to a good start, even if their their Week 1 win over the Jets was closer than it should have been. Darnold, facing his former team, went 24 for 35 with 279 passing yards and one touchdown. When passing for over 270 yards, Darnold has posted a career record of 6-2.

Running back Christian McCaffrey also got the hot start he wanted in his return to action with 98 yards on the ground and 89 receiving yards. DJ Moore also had a solid outing, grabbing six catches for 80 yards on the afternoon.

Shaq Thompson led the defense with a dominant performance, racking up 10 tackles, one sack, one tackle for loss, three pass deflections and an interception.

1st Q 2nd Q 3rd Q 4th Q Final
Packers 0 3 0 0 3
Saints 3 14 7 14 38

In a game that was supposed to be played in New Orleans, the Saints used this as motivation to outclass the Packers in all facets of the game. Jameis Winston looks poised to win the A.P.’s Comeback Player of the Year award as he went 14 for 20 with 148 passing yards and five touchdowns.

Winston kept a lot of passes down below as he only threw beyond 10 yards on six occasions. However, half of these passes ended up as touchdowns, including a 49-yard bomb to Deonte Harris at the end of the game.

The Saints’ defense was solid all game. They held Aaron Rodgers to an uncharacteristic 36.8 rating. Rodgers averaged 119.2 a season ago.

Tampa Bay Bucs vs. Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys 7 9 10 3 29

Quarterback Tom Brady went 32 for 50 with 379 yards and four touchdowns. He also added two interceptions, neither of which were his fault. One came from a dropped screen pass to Leonard Fournette and the other came on a Hail Mary to end the first half.

On the receiving end, multiple players went off against the Dallas defense. Rob Gronkowski had eight catches for 90 yards, Chris Godwin had nine receptions for 105 yards, and Antonio Brown went for 121 yards on five receptions. All three scored, with Gronk scoring twice.

NFC South weekly news roundup: Week 1

If the Falcons wish to compete with the Bucs this season, they can start by handling their business against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.

The NFL season is already underway as the defending NFC South-champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers played host to the Cowboys in a thrilling 31-29 win on Thursday night. If the Falcons wish to compete with the Bucs this season, they can start by handling their business against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1.

Here is a weekly news roundup from the rest of the NFC South.

Falcons restructure Deion Jones’ deal, create $2.7M in cap space

On Thursday, the team converted over $4.1 million of linebacker Deion Jones’ 2021 base salary into a roster bonus

The Atlanta Falcons have created a little financial breathing room as the team nears its Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

On Thursday, the Falcons converted over $4.1 million of linebacker Deion Jones‘ 2021 base salary into a roster bonus, freeing up $2.78 million in cap space, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

So where does that leave Atlanta? According to Over The Cap’s projections, the Falcons had just over $330,000 in space available prior to restructuring Jones’ deal.

With the new money freed up, the Falcons should have just over $3 million in cap space if the team wishes to sign a veteran free agent before the season starts.

5 bold predictions for Falcons’ Week 1 matchup vs. Eagles

Regardless of what you expect from this year’s Atlanta Falcons team, a fresh start was clearly needed after last season’s 4-12 finish.

Regardless of what you expect from this year’s Atlanta Falcons team, a fresh start was clearly needed after last season’s 4-12 finish. Team owner Arthur Blank did just that during the offseason, bringing in Terry Fontenot and Artur Smith to help the Falcons return to the playoffs following a three-year drought.

On Sunday, Atlanta will host the Philadelphia Eagles from Mercedes-Benz Stadium to kick off the 2021 season. Here are five bold predictions for this weekend’s matchup.

Raheem Morris praises Falcons’ mindset after 43-6 win over Raiders

In what was arguably the team’s most impressive victory of the season, we saw Atlanta close out the Raiders by turning up the heat in the fourth quarter instead of checking out early.

After last weekend’s humiliating loss to the New Orleans Saints, very few people around the NFL would have been surprised if the Atlanta Falcons crumbled over the final six weeks of the season. Interim head coach Raheem Morris simply wasn’t going to let that happen under his watch, and the Falcons responded with the 43-6 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

In what was arguably the team’s most impressive victory of the season, we saw Atlanta close out the Raiders by turning up the heat in the fourth quarter instead of checking out early.

Morris is now 4-2 since taking over as head coach. Following the game, he addressed the media and credited the Falcons’ “ball mentality” as the key to the team creating five turnovers (4 forced fumbles, 1 interception) during Sunday’s win.

Watch Morris’ postgame press conference below, as shared by the team’s Twitter account.
