Attorney for Quinton Dunbar denies client paid off robbery victims

The attorney for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar is vehemently denying his client attempted to pay off the alleged robbery victims.

Many people would agree 2020 hasn’t been a great year, but for Seattle Seahawks defensive back, Quinton Dunbar, it has been disastrous.

Back in the middle of May, Dunbar – along with Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker – was issued a warrant for his arrest on four counts of armed robbery with a firearm. In Florida, where the crime allegedly took place, felonies committed with a firearm carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, with the potential for life.

While Dunbar was eventually released on bail and recently asked for permission by the State of Florida to attend Seattle’s training camp, things took a dramatic turn for the worse for the embattled cornerback.

On Friday evening, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reported both Dunbar and Baker allegedly tried to pay off the robbery victims.

According to Leonard’s reporting, the four victims have signed affidavits swearing they were paid $55,000 by Dunbar and Baker at the office of Dunbar’s attorney.

It is worth mentioning that on July 7 it was reported by The Athletic’s legal analyst Daniel Wallach that Quinton Dunbar hired a second attorney to his defense. While this story is still developing, Dunbar ramping up his legal team is certainly not going unnoticed in light of recent events.

Of course, in the American criminal justice system, a defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty, and it absolutely must be noted Dunbar’s first attorney is vehemently denying these recent accusations.

However, the NFL doesn’t always wait for the justice system to play itself out, as the league is often dictated by the court of public opinion.

The Seahawks may very well decide to get ahead of the situation by cutting their losses with Dunbar and moving onto different options at the cornerback position . . . perhaps one who isn’t mired in legal jeopardy.

Is former Bears RG Kyle Long considering a return to football?

Former Bears RG Kyle Long denied reports that he’s been contacted by the Jets about returning to football.

Former Chicago Bears right guard Kyle Long’s return to the NFL lasted about as long as a few games of Fortnite.

On Friday morning, a report surfaced from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that said the New York Jets’ front office had spoken with Long about coming out of retirement to join the AFC East squad. But after a short period of time, the 31-year old came out and refuted those reports.

According to Rick Taristano of WGN News, Long said there was no truth of having any conversations with the Jets.

Long announced he was “stepping away” from the game earlier this year after dealing with a litany of injuries over the last four seasons. He spent his entire career with the Bears, earning Pro-Bowl honors in his first three seasons before injuries took a toll on his body.

In 2019, Long played in four games before landing on injured reserve, ending his season prematurely for the third time in his career. After signing a lucrative deal prior to the 2016 season, Long’s contract was restructured, making 2019 his final season under contract as a Bear. Upon the announcement of his deal, Long tweeted “Bear for Life.”

Since Long hung up his cleats, he’s dabbled in local sports media and streaming video games regularly while losing a significant amount of weight. It is worth noting, however, that he has not yet filled out his retirement papers and while he claims the rumors of talks with the Jets are untrue, their general manager Joe Douglas has gone down this road before, convincing former Carolina Panthers center Ryan Kalil out of retirement last season, per Mehta.

Long has always avoided using the word “retirement” when discussing his decision to walk away from football. While it may still be a possibility at some point, he seems to be enjoying his “gas-station ready” physique?

A source told the New York Daily News that his illness is treatable and that he would be going home. However, another source told the newspaper that “his condition had deteriorated and he was battling pneumonia.”

TMZ is reporting that Spinks, 66, is “fighting for his life.”

Spinks’ wife posted on Facebook Monday, “It’s been a tough year for us. Leon has endured a lot of medical problems. I’m reaching out to ask you to kindly pray for my Beautiful Husband Leon.”

Spinks had abdominal surgery in 2014, according to the Daily News. He also has been in and out of a wheelchair for several years.

Spinks, a former U.S. Marine, won a gold medal as a light heavyweight in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Then, in only his eighth fight, he upset an aging Muhammad Ali by a split decision to win the heavyweight championship on Feb. 15, 1978 in Las Vegas.

Ali regained the title seven months later by a unanimous decision. Spinks had mixed results the remainder of his career, at both heavyweight and cruiserweight, never again winning a major title.

He last fought in 1995.
