New Orleans Saints vs Atlanta Falcons Game Preview

Why New Orleans Saints Will Win

Where are the guys? Where’s the talent on Atlanta?

It’s an interesting mix of players full of youth and potential, but it might take a little bit.

There’s not going to be much of a Falcon running game to worry about when Marcus Mariota isn’t taking off, and the defense that allowed the fourth-most points in the NFL now gets a revamped Saint attack that added a – maybe – healthy Michael Thomas and Chris Olave to the receiving corps.

The defense has the secondary to clamp down on the mediocre Falcon receivers – at least until Drake London gets going – and again, there’s not enough of a running game to make up for it. However …

Week 1 CFN NFL Expert Picks

Why Atlanta Falcons Will Win

Don’t be stunned if Mariota is dangerous.

He’s got the experience and ability to at least keep the chains moving, and he’s going to have to pull a few rabbits out of the hat to keep things moving.

On the other side, the Falcons need to get the pass rush going right away. The Saint offensive front is questionable going into the season – it’s fine, but not amazing – and the running game might not be there if Jameis Winston isn’t finding ways to spread the short-range passing game around.

There’s one problem …

Week 1 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Atlanta isn’t really going to have much of a pass rush.

New Orleans might not be all that flashy, but it’ll be effective enough offensively to go along with a nasty defense that’s going to hammer down on anything Atlanta tries to do through the air.

The Falcons will have a few nice moments helped by three interceptions, but the offense won’t do enough to capitalize on the chances.

Why New Orleans Saints Will Win

The Saints were able to dominate the matchup a few weeks ago, allowing just three field goals in a 24-9 victory at home. Taysom Hill is doing just fine doing what he does at quarterback – he’s not going to be Aaron Rodgers, and that’s okay – and the defense continues to be dominant.

The Saints lead the NFL in both rushing scores and fewest rushing touchdowns allowed. It hasn’t given up more than 100 yards on the ground in the last six games and forced 13 takeaways in the last five.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Atlanta Falcons Will Win

The offense picked it back up fast after that clunker against the Saints.

As bad as the offense was two weeks ago, that’s how good it was in a dominant 43-6 win over the Raiders – and it was without Todd Gurley and Julio Jones.

The running game still isn’t likely to work, and there won’t be five takeaways, but the defense has seen Hill once – this might be like a baseball team seeing a pitcher the second time through the order – and Matt Ryan and the passing game need to be merely very good. The Saint defensive stats are skewed after playing Denver in last week’s disaster.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

QB Taysom Hill, New Orleans
So far, so good. He might not throw for enough yards to help you out, and he hasn’t thrown a touchdown pass so far, but in his two starts he has over 40 rising yards in each, and he ran for two touchdowns in both games. He’s the option now on the goal line – good for him, a killer for Alvin Kamara.

What’s Going To Happen

Atlanta will be better at home this time around. The New Orleans defense will still be an issue, and there still won’t be any running game, but the Falcons will make Hill throw – that will be a problem.

New Orleans will grind its way to a win, but it’ll be a tough fight.

New Orleans Saints (7-2) vs Atlanta Falcons (3-6) Game Preview

Why Atlanta Falcons Will Win

Taysom Hill is starting at quarterback for New Orleans.

You’ll take your chances.

The Atlanta defense hasn’t been bad on third downs. and the bad secondary that gives up the most yards in the NFL might get a break if Hill isn’t hitting his downfield throws.

Teams are able to throw on the New Orleans secondary just enough to keep pushing, and Matt Ryan should be able to press enough to push for at least 300 yards. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why New Orleans Saints Will Win

Taysom Hill is starting at quarterback for New Orleans.

Drew Brees would’ve eaten this Atlanta secondary alive, but Hill should be able to add the wild-card and wildcat element to the mix. The New Orleans offense is bigger when it’s running well, and it’s not just going to be Hill barreling away.

Combine Hill with Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, and the Saints are going to run and run and run some more. No one really barrels on the Falcons – they’ve had the fewest rushing attempts against them – but the Saints are about to change all of that.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

QB Taysom Hill, New Orleans
Okay, well … here we go. You wanted to see if the guy could really look and play like a potential franchise quarterback, and here it is. Hill finally gets his first NFL start at QB, but don’t expect him to just be another Tim Tebow type. He’ll get his chances to throw and run the offense like normal, but if he happens to run in a few touchdowns, fantasy owners who’ll take the shot on him will take it.

What’s Going To Happen

The defense and running game will cash the check that Sean Payton wrote by naming Hill the starter.

Atlanta’s offense won’t get the running game going, and Matt Ryan will be good enough to keep things moving, but New Orleans will dominate the time of possession battle – Hill will be just fine.
