NFL Divisional Round: New Orleans Saints home favorites vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints are the betting favorites in their NFL Divisional Round home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12-5) visit the New Orleans Saints (13-4) Sunday in an NFC Divisional Round battle at 6:40 p.m. ET. Below, we take a look at the early Buccaneers-Saints betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The last game of the second playoff weekend offers a dream matchup of two of the best NFL quarterbacks to ever play. Forty-three-year-old Tom Brady and soon-to-be 42-year-old Drew Brees face off as the two NFC South rivals meet for a third time this season. The division champion Saints swept the season series, winning 34-23 as 4-point home favorites in Week 1 and a surprising 38-3 rout as 3-point road underdogs in Week 9.

Saturday, Brady led the Buccaneers to their first playoff victory since 2002, throwing for 381 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 31-23 Wild Card win at the Washington Football Team. The Bucs, who failed to cover as 10-point favorites, led 18-7 at the half, and fended off a Washington rally which cut the margin to 18-16 after three quarters. PK Ryan Succop’s third of four field goals and a 3-yard TD run by RB Leonard Fournette (93 rushing yards, 19 carries) increased the Bucs advantage to 28-16 with 9:11 to go, a lead WFT couldn’t overcome. Tampa Bay wideouts Antonio Brown and Chris Godwin each caught a Brady TD pass in the first half, while WR Mike Evans led the Bucs with 119 receiving yards on 6 catches.

The Saints’ Wild Card win came against the visiting Chicago Bears 21-9 Sunday. Brees (28 of 39 pass attempts) threw for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns, RB Alvin Kamara rushed for 99 yards with a 3-yard, fourth-quarter TD, and the defense held the Bears out of the end zone until the final play. Because the TD occurred as time expired, the Bears weren’t required to attempt an extra point, allowing the Saints to cover the spread as 11-point favorites and sending shockwaves through Las Vegas sportsbooks. The Saints defense held the Bears to 239 total yards, including just 48 rushing yards. WR Michael Thomas and RB Latavius Murray each caught a TD pass.

NFL Wild Card: New Orleans Saints double-digit home favorites vs. Chicago Bears

The New Orleans Saints are the betting favorites in their NFL Wild Card home game against the Chicago Bears.

During NFL Wild Card Weekend, the Chicago Bears (8-8) visit the New Orleans Saints (12-4) Sunday in an NFC Wild Card tilt at 4:40 p.m. ET. Below, we take a look at the early Bears-Saints betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Bears backdoored their way into the postseason. Despite losing at home to the Green Bay Packers 35-16 in Week 17, Chicago claimed the NFC’s No. 7 and final seed when the Arizona Cardinals (8-8) lost at the Los Angeles Rams. The Bears were 5-1 after Week 6 but lost each of their next six games. A three-game win streak against a trio of struggling teams – the Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars – found the Bears back in contention heading into the regular-season finale. Midseason offensive line changes resulted in giving QB Mitchell Trubisky (2,055 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions) enough protection, and it opened holes for the running game, which has produced six consecutive 100-yard games after failing to reach the century mark in the previous seven. RB David Montgomery ran for 598 of his 1,070 regular-season rushing yards in those six games, averaging 5.16 yards per carry.

Despite missing several key players, the Saints closed the regular season with a 33-7 rout at the Carolina Panthers as 6-point favorites. QB Drew Brees threw for 201 yards with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, while the defense finished with 5 picks. RB Alvin Kamara, RB Latavius Murray, S C.J. Gardner-Johnson and S Marcus Williams didn’t play due to COVID-19 protocols, and WR Michael Thomas is on the Reserve/Injured list due to an ankle injury. The good news is they could all be back for Sunday’s playoff game vs. the Bears. New Orleans won 26-23 at Chicago in Week 8, but needed overtime. Brees threw for 280 yards and 2 TDs in the victory, while QB Nick Foles (272 passing yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) started for the Bears.

New Orleans Saints road favorites at Carolina Panthers in Week 17

The New Orleans Saints are the betting favorites in their Week 17 road game at the Carolina Panthers.

The 2020 NFC South champion New Orleans Saints (11-4) visit the rival Carolina Panthers (5-10) Sunday of Week 17 for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. Here’s a look at the early Saints-Panthers betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Saints clinched their fourth consecutive NFC South title with a 52-33 Christmas Day victory over the visiting Minnesota Vikings, covering as 6.5-point favorites. RB Alvin Kamara tied an NFL record with 6 rushing touchdowns and finished with a career-best 155 rushing yards. QB Drew Brees threw for 311 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, while the offense finished with 583 total yards and never had to punt. The Saints still have a chance to claim the NFC’s No. 1 seed, but they need to finish in a three-way tie with the Green Bay Packers (12-3) and the Seattle Seahawks (11-4). New Orleans has to beat Carolina, Green Bay must lose at the Chicago Bears, and Seattle must win at the San Francisco 49ers for that to occur.

The Panthers snapped a 3-game skid with a 20-13 Week 16 road win at the Washington Football Team. The Panthers, who covered as 1-point favorites, jumped out to a 20-3 halftime lead and held on for the victory. WR Curtis Samuel set career highs with 106 receiving yards (5 catches) and 52 rushing yards (7 carries). His 45-yard run set up Carolina’s second TD for a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter. QB Teddy Bridgewater completed 19-of-28 passes for 197 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Panthers, who had already been eliminated from the playoff race.

New Orleans Saints Christmas Day home favorites vs. Minnesota Vikings in Week 16

The New Orleans Saints are the betting favorites in their Week 16 Christmas Day home game vs. the Minnesota Vikings.

The Minnesota Vikings (6-8) visit the New Orleans Saints (10-4) Christmas Day for a 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff in Week 16. Here’s a look at the early Vikings-Saints betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Vikings’ playoff hopes took a big hit with a 33-27 home loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 15. Minnesota, which was a 2.5-point favorite, allowed 397 total yards, including a career-high 146 rushing yards and two touchdowns to Bears RB David Montgomery. Vikings RB Dalvin Cook finished with 132 rushing yards and one TD. Minnesota’s chance of making the postseason fell to 3% with the loss, according to Vikings Wire. The Arizona Cardinals (8-6) are currently in the final NFC playoff spot, while the Bears are 7-7. To earn the final berth, Minnesota needs to win out (at Saints and at Detroit Lions), Arizona has to lose its final two games (home vs. San Francisco 49ers and at Los Angeles Rams) and Chicago has to lose one game (either at Jacksonville Jaguars or at home vs. Green Bay Packers).

Depending on what sportsbook is referenced, the Saints either pushed (+3) or failed to cover (+2.5) in a 32-29 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 15. The good news was that QB Drew Brees returned after missing four games with fractured ribs and a punctured lung. After a slow start – 6 incompletions and 1 interception – he finished 15 of 34 for 234 passing yards and 3 TDs with the one pick. New Orleans, which already clinched a playoff berth and needs just one win to claim the NFC South title, led 15-14 early in the third quarter, but Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes threw the final of his 4 touchdowns to give the Chiefs a 29-15 lead with 13:44 to go. A Brees-to-RB Alvin Kamara 14-yard TD made it 29-22 at the 9:43 mark. After the Chiefs kicked a field go with 4:18 remaining, Brees connected with WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey for a 17-yard TD with 2:06 left. The Saints had 2 timeouts left, but the Chiefs were able to run out the clock for the win.

The New Orleans Saints (10-2) visit the Philadelphia Eagles (3-8-1) Sunday of Week 14 for a 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. Here’s a look at the early Saints-Eagles betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The Saints, who became the first team to clinch a playoff berth, ran their win streak to 9 with a 21-16 victory (as 2.5-point favorites) at the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13. QB Taysom Hill, making his third consecutive start in place of injured Drew Brees, completed 27 of 37 pass attempts for 232 yards and the first 2 touchdown passes of his career. He added 83 rushing yards on 14 carries, while RB Alvin Kamara rushed for a game-high 88 yards with a TD on 15 carries. Ahead 21-16 with 1:49 to go, the New Orleans defense came up big when Atlanta faced 2nd-and-2 at the Saints’ 13-yard line. It stopped the Falcons for no gain on second down, a 7-yard loss on third down and an incomplete pass into the end zone on fourth down. Earlier in the final quarter, the Saints defense did allow its first touchdown in 14 quarters.

The Eagles lost at the Green Bay Packers 30-16 Sunday as 8.5-point underdogs. Trailing 20-3 midway in the third quarter, the Eagles pulled QB Carson Wentz (6 of 15, 79 passing yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs) for rookie Jalen Hurts. On Philly’s second possession after the switch, the second-round pick out of Alabama steered a 73-yard, nine-play drive, capped by a 32-yard TD pass to WR Greg Ward on fourth-and-18 with 7:52 to go. When WR/PR Jalen Reagor returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown, the Eagles trailed 23-16 with 6:30 remaining. The two teams traded punts before Packers RB Aaron Jones put the game away with a 77-yard TD scamper at the 2:36 mark. Hurts, who threw an interception with 49 seconds left, finished 5 of 12 for 109 passing yards with 1 TD and 1 pick, while rushing for 29 yards on 5 carries. “Who starts at QB?” will likely be the big news in the City of Brotherly Love this week. Also, worth watching will be the injury status of CB Darius Slay, who exited with a knee injury in the second half.

New Orleans Saints big favorites at home vs. San Francisco 49ers in Week 10

The New Orleans Saints are the betting favorites in their Week 10 home game with the San Francisco 49ers.

The San Francisco 49ers (4-5) visit the New Orleans Saints (6-2) in Week 10. Kickoff is Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET. Here’s a look at the early betting odds and lines at BetMGM Sportsbook.

The undermanned 49ers lost 34-17 at home to the Green Bay Packers in the Week 9 Thursday Night Football game as 6-point underdogs. With numerous injuries and WR Kendrick Bourne‘s positive COVID-19 test, which also sidelined three other 49ers for high-risk contacts, San Francisco was no match for Green Bay.

Among the injured who sat were QB Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle), All-Pro TE George Kittle (foot), RB Raheem Mostert (ankle), WRs Deebo Samuel (hamstring) and Brandon Aiyuk (COVID contact), DE Nick Bosa (knee) and CB Richard Sherman (calf).

QB Nick Mullens started in place of Garoppolo, throwing for 291 yards with a touchdown and one pick. Bourne has since tested negative and there’s hope several of the players out due to contact tracing will be back for Week 10.

The Saints went into Tampa, Fla., and manhandled the Buccaneers 38-3 in the Week 9 Sunday Night Football game as 3.5-point underdogs. QB Drew Brees threw for 222 yards and 4 touchdowns as New Orleans won a fifth consecutive game, took over first place in the NFC South and completed a season sweep of rival Tampa Bay.

Brees’ first 3 TDs, RB Alvin Kamara‘s 1-yard TD run and a Wil Lutz FG helped the Saints build a 31-0 lead by halftime. The Saints defense held the Bucs to just 8 rushing yards (on 5 carries) and didn’t allow them to score until there was 5:52 to go. It was also the first Under game the Saints played in 2020 – they entered with a 7-0 Over/Under record.
