The NFL has seen some new and downright ugly uniform designs come to fruition this offseason.
Beginning with the Buccaneers in early April, numerous teams around the league have unveiled new uniforms for the upcoming season. Tampa Bay’s new jerseys are not too bad, but they are essentially identical to what the team used to wear in the mid-2000s. The Colts changed their logo, wordmark and adjusted their jersey number design to more of a 1950-1960s style for some reason. The Browns also made minimal changes that the average fan likely would not notice. The Chargers and Patriots did a decent enough job with their new jerseys, tweaking designs to fit fan and player desires.
Then there’s the Falcons and Rams.
Both Atlanta and Los Angeles rolled out new uniforms that were met with harsh criticism. The Falcons’ release in April caught a lot of heat due in large part to the pointless “ATL” placement on the front of the jerseys. The Rams’ release on Wednesday simply missed the mark, drawing the ire of nearly the entire fanbase thanks to a change in helmet logo and a colorway that failed to represent the history of the franchise as intended.

When you look at some of the new uniform designs that have been released in the last month or so, it makes you realize that the Jets’ re-design last year was not that bad.
New York’s jersey re-design was met with plenty of anticipation but faced a bit of backlash upon release. The stealth black design was met with the most criticism, as the Jets had never had an all-black alternate jersey before. People were not sold on the Gotham Green jerseys either, as New York wore green jerseys with white pants at home for years.
After a while, people adjusted and took a liking to the new uniforms. If anything, the critics of Gang Green’s new jersey can take solace in the fact that they are not as bad as what some teams will be rocking in 2020.
The Jets have not gotten many things right lately on the field, but at least they’re beating some teams in the uniform department.
