Devils at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Devils 2

Moneyline

The PENGUINS (-125) have handled their business against the Devils (+105) in recent seasons, going 7-2 in the previous 9 meetings. The favorite is also 7-2 in the last 9 in this series, too.

In addition, New Jersey has managed to win just once in the previous 9 games overall, while going 0-4 in the last 4 games inside the Metropolitan Division.

Puck line/Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+175) are worth a roll of the dice, but go lightly.

Pittsburgh is 0-1-2 in the last 3 games overall, but 4 of the team’s last 7 wins have been by 2 or more goals, while, again, New Jersey +1.5 (-240) has dropped 8 of the last 9 games overall, and it is ice cold.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-115) is the lean. The Under is 6-1 in the last 7 games overall for the Devils, while going 7-2 in New Jersey’s last 9 games on the road. The Under is 8-2-1 in the last 11 games when playing on a day of rest, too.

For the Pens, the Under is 5-2-3 in the last 10 games overall, while cashing at a 6-1-1 clip in the last 8 games inside the Metropolitan Division.

New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New Jersey Devils (17-28-5) travel to meet the Pittsburgh Penguins (31-13-8) Thursday at PPG Paints Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Devils vs. Penguins odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Devils have fallen back onto hard times with two straight losses. On the bright side, Jersey will get D Dougie Hamilton (jaw) back Thursday after being out since Jan. 2. They have been off since Feb. 15 so they’ll be well-rested for this one.

Pittsburgh is coming off of losses to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes. The latter hurt in particular as they’re now four points back from the division-leading ‘Canes in the Metropolitan Division.

Devils at Penguins odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 8:51 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +250 (bet $100 to win $250) | Penguins -320 (bet $320 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Devils +1.5 (+100) | Penguins -1.5 (-125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: -105 | U: -120)

Devils at Penguins projected goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood (9-9-3, 3.29 GAA, .894 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (25-10-6, 2.29 GAA, .922 SV%, 3 SO)

Blackwood is expected to make his return after being sidelined since Jan. 19 with a heel injury. He was 1-3-0 with a 3.31 GAA and an .893 SV% against Pittsburgh last season.

Jarry was great against the Devils Feb. 13 as he stopped 28 of 30 shots in a 4-2 victory. He has given up 4 goals in two straight games, albeit against better offenses than the Devils.

Devils at Penguins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Devils 1

Money line

The Penguins (-320) are far too expensive to break bread with here. PASS and look to the spread.

Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (-125) is pretty unforgiving on the payout, but it’s the preferred side.

Three of Pittsburgh’s last four wins have been by at least 2 goals.  Depending on how frisky you’re feeling the ALTERNATE SPREAD PENGUINS -2.5 (+135) will offer a decent payout if you want to test it against a goalie that hasn’t played in over a month.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-120) is the better side here. The last game between these sides ended at 4-2, and Pittsburgh hasn’t been banging down the doors on offense. The Penguins have averaged just 2.8 goals per game over their last 10 games as they have had peaks and valleys. If you throw out the two outlier games where the Devils scored seven goals each, they averaged just 1.8 goals in eight games.

Devils at Penguins projected goalies

Jonathan Bernier (2-0-0, 2.48 GAA, .911 SV%) vs. Tristan Jarry (3-1-1, 1.78 GAA, .933 SV%)

Bernier has picked up wins over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks and expansion Seattle Kraken last time out. He allowed just two goals on 29 shots against Seattle Tuesday.

Jarry allowed three goals on 29 shots last time out Tuesday against the defending champ Tampa Bay Lightning. Before that, he had allowed two or fewer goals in each of his first four starts, going 3-0-1.

Devils at Penguins odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 4, Devils 1

Money line

The PENGUINS (-155) were blanked last time out against the Flames, but they still have managed 3.4 goals per game to rank ninth in the NHL. You can expect Pittsburgh to bounce back in a big way, and it will likely lean upon its No. 1 penalty kill.

Against the spread

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+160) are worth a small-unit play, but it might take a late empty-net goal to get your wager across the finish line. Pittsburgh has won five straight against New Jersey, and four of the past five in the Steel City. Look for the Pens to maintain their dominance and get it done once again, doubling up the Devs.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (+110) is the slight lean here at plus money. The Under is 3-1-1 in the past five meetings in Pittsburgh, while going 4-1 in the past five for the Pens as a home favorite.

New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The New Jersey Devils (14-25-6) play the middle game of a three-game set at the Pittsburgh Penguins (29-14-3) Thursday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at PPG Paints Arena. Below, we analyze the Devils-Penguins odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Devils were tripped up 7-6 in a crazy game Tuesday. New Jersey fell behind 4-0 after one period, and 6-0 after two. That’s when the magic started as the Devils scored six third-period goals to just one for the Pens. New Jersey never tied it up, but its last goal made it 7-6 with 41 seconds to go.

The good news for the Penguins is that they won behind a seven-goal night. But after the ugly third period, it likely felt like a loss. They do have three straight wins against the Devils since April 11, and they’re averaging six goals per game in that span.

Devils at Penguins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 4:55 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Devils +240 (bet $100 to win $240) | Penguins -300 (bet $300 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Devils +1.5 (-105) | Penguins -1.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Devils at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Mackenzie Blackwood (9-15-3, 3.10 GAA, .900 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (19-8-3, 2.85 GAA, .906 SV%)

Blackwood hasn’t won in eight consecutive starts, allowing four or more goals in six of those outings dating back to a 1-0 shutout at the Boston Bruins March 28. He wasn’t in there for Tuesday’s 7-6 game, as G Scott Wedgewood started and was replaced by G Aaron Dell.

Jarry hung on for the victory Tuesday, allowing six goals on 30 shots, and he has won four of the past five overall. It wasn’t pretty, but he now has wins in consecutive starts in the head-to-head series after a pair of losses in March to New Jersey.

Devils at Penguins: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Penguins 4, Devils 3

Money line (ML)

There are two ways this can go. The Penguins (-300) can come out angry, embarrassed and thrash the Devils (+240), or they will lose outright. Either way, shy away from the money line and look to the spread instead.

PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The DEVILS +1.5 (-105) are a decent play here, as they fought back for the cover Tuesday. Condolences to those who laid the goal and a half with the Pens and were celebrating when it was 6-0. Ouch.

Playing New Jersey comes with some risk. The Devils have dropped seven in a row, and only one of the losses (Tuesday) was a one-goal difference. So, go lightly.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (-115) is the best play on the board. Both teams hit the six-goal mark last time out, and total bettors were guaranteed of at least a push after just 20 minutes. That’s a rarity, and you should expect the goals and pace to be at a less feverish pace in this one. But seven total goals are easily attainable.
