Mac Jones named New England Patriots QB, Cam Newton released

Breaking down how the New England Patriots’ decision to name Mac Jones their Week 1 starter affected NFL futures odds, including Offensive Rookie of the Year and Super Bowl 56.

The New England Patriots released veteran QB Cam Newton Tuesday, Aug. 31, and turned the reins of the offense over to rookie QB Mac Jones. The No. 15 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Alabama, Jones will now be tasked with turning around a Patriots team that went just 7-9 last season. Below, we look at changes in the Super Bowl 56 and Offensive Rookie of the Year odds; visit SportsbookWire.com for NFL picks and predictions.

Jones was the fifth quarterback taken in the draft as the Patriots look for a long-term replacement for QB Tom Brady. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist last year after passing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns against 4 interceptions with a 77.4% completion rate.

Newton is replaced after just one year in New England. The former MVP started 15 games last season and went 242-for-368 for 2,657 yards and 8 TD against 10 INT, while adding 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground. QBs Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham remain to back up Jones in his rookie season.
