Tar Heels slip one spot in Sunday’s NET rankings

The UNC men’s basketball team squeaked by Florida State on Saturday afternoon, but fell a spot in an important ranking.

Saturday was exactly the type of basketball scare UNC needed.

The Tar Heels trailed by five at halftime against Florida State, in large part due to 13 turnovers and the Seminoles shooting well from deep.

Thanks to Cormac Ryan, an extremely aggressive Elliot Cadeau and clutch shooting from RJ Davis late, North Carolina came back to win its 10th straight game and remained undefeated in ACC play.

When teams win, they usually move up in the rankings. The AP Poll comes out sometime tomorrow – there’s a good chance UNC will go up a spot or two.

In the latest NET rankings, however, North Carolina fell from sixth to seventh.

The college basketball ranking experts could’ve look at the fact UNC struggled against an unranked team for most of Saturday, slipping it a few spots down.

This movement won’t impact the Tar Heels much at all, as NET rankings are moreso used to help teams on the bubble. UNC has four Quad 1, 2 and 3 wins apiece, plus five Quad 4 wins, which helped it gain its current spot.

A convincing win at Georgia Tech – on Tuesday – could help North Carolina improve its Wednesday NET numbers. For UNC, its final NET spot could be the difference between a top or second seed in the NCAA Tournament.

As a result of the Quadrant 3 win, the Orange and Blue rose three spots to No. 39 overall in the NET rankings, putting them between the No. 38 Mississippi State Bulldogs and the No. 40 Xavier Musketeers.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240

Tar Heels climb one spot in latest NET rankings

What can’t the UNC men’s basketball team do? The Tar Heels are undefeated in ACC play, winners of their last nine and a legit title threat.

Monday night’s UNC-Wake Forest men’s basketball game was supposed to be a battle between two of the ACC’s best teams.

What resulted, however, was the ACC’ BEST team dominating another.

The Tar Heels trailed by one at halftime, then exploded offensively in the second half for an 85-64 victory, extending their winning streak to nine games and keeping themselves atop the conference.

It was the RJ Davis show inside the Dean Dome, with UNC’s (16-3, 8-0) senior shooting guard erupting for a career high 36 points. Davis drained 14 of his 23 field goal attempts and made 4-of-5 free throws.

With North Carolina’s dominating win, it climbed to sixth in the latest NET rankings.

NET rankings are utilized to determine a team’s strength of schedule (and victory), with wins over higher-ranked teams boosting NCAA Tournament chances ever further.

UNC is undefeated at home (9-0) and on the road (4-0), plus an even .500 in neutral-site games (3-3). The Tar Heels have four quad one wins, plus 12 combined Quad 2, 3 and 4 victories.

Saturday presents another opportunity for a Quad 1 victory, with North Carolina traveling down to Tallahassee, Fla for a matchup with second-place Florida State. The Seminoles (11-7, 5-2) have won five of six ACC games since losing to UNC in Chapel Hill.

The Gators slipped a bit in the NET rankings after their Quad 1 loss.

The Gators were outmatched from horn to horn and simply could not break the spell of the Vols’ intimidating defense.

As a result of the resounding Quadrant 1 loss, the Orange and Blue fell six spots to No. 55 overall in the NET rankings, putting them between the No. 54 Boise State Broncos and No. 56 Virginia Tech Hokies.

LSU men’s basketball rises in NET despite Auburn loss

LSU’s failed comeback effort on Saturday may have proven to be significant in terms of the metrics.

It looked like the Tigers were heading for an ugly loss at Auburn on Saturday.

Though LSU’s men’s basketball team didn’t ultimately win the game, a 21-2 run when it was trailing by 28 points made the final score much more respectable in the 93-78 loss as the Tigers moved to 2-1 in SEC play.

While the team doesn’t want to take moral victories, that comeback effort may have been significant. Despite the loss, LSU actually moved up in the NET Rankings after the game.

It remains in the top 100 and sat at No. 95 on Sunday, though it did drop one spot to No. 96 on Monday. Still, that’s a net gain of three spots after the team entered Saturday’s game ranked No. 99.

LSU will be back in action on Wednesday as it has a huge opportunity at home against a 15-1 Ole Miss team.

North Carolina stays pat in Top 10 of latest NET rankings

When you play quality opponents, you’ll be ranked higher. When you BEAT those opponents, you’ll be ranked higher. Where’s UNC in the NET?

It’s nothing but NET for the UNC men’s basketball team on this gorgeous Monday.

Carolina is riding high off a 6-game winning streak, with its most recent victory a 36-point drubbing of Syracuse over the weekend.

The Tar Heels are getting scoring contributions from everyone – not just RJ Davis and Armando Bacot. UNC’s offense continues to wow with its efficient, fast-paced tempo, but it’s the suddenly-efficient defense winning games.

Because of who Carolina’s beaten and the overall strength of its schedule, Carolina is high up in the NET rankings.

The Tar Heels remained put at seventh in the latest rankings, a spot ahead of Auburn and one place behind Tennessee.

Based on early-season results, the ACC appears to be pretty top-heavy this year. Wake Forest is surprising virtually everyone besides Deactown, playing to a 12-4 (4-1) record, while NC State has the same mark. Duke is playing its best basketball, too, while Florida State’s miserable 2022-2023 season appears to have been a fluke.

Regardless of how strong or weak the conference is, all UNC can control is winning games. Higher NET rankings certainly help a team’s NCAA Tournament chances, particularly those on the bubble, but Carolina will likely not have to worry about being on the outside this year.

Gators rise in NET rankings after home win over Arkansas

Florida basketball got a boost in the NET rankings thanks to the win over the Hogs.

Todd Golden talked about keeping focus after a blowout loss at the Ole Miss Rebels last Wednesday and it appears that his team took it to heart.

The Gators earned their first Southeastern Conference win in three tries over the visiting Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday inside the O’Connell Center, 90-68, to improve to 11-5 overall. It was a much-needed win for Florida, even if it was only of the Quadrant 3 variety.

As a result of the resounding win, the Gators rose 11 spots to No. 48 overall in the NET rankings, putting them between the No. 47 Ohio State Buckeyes and No. 49 Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

Florida now is 0-4 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 3-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 5-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.

Next up, the Gators return to the road to take on the Tennessee Volunteers inside Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
