NET Rankings of Notre Dame’s remaining opponents

A win vs. some teams would be worth more than wins vs. others down the stretch.

Notre Dame has six games left before the ACC Tournament. Of those games, four of them really will give the Irish a chance to show it can hang with some of women’s basketball’s best teams. They need a strong showing in those games, too, because while they’re a lock for the NCAA Tournament, no bracketologist currently has them as a top-four seed. That would mean not being able to host the first two rounds as it did last year.

The Irish currently have an NET Ranking of 10th after losing to Louisville and then beating Florida State. And while their NET SOS of 47th is higher than it was a week ago, it’s still very low. As my World Series history podcast co-host Lucas Mitzel relayed to me, the average NET SOS among the top 16 NET Ranking team is 26th.

The Irish can improve their odds of being a tournament host depending on how well they finish the regular season especially. Here’s their remaining schedule and the NET Rankings for their opponents:

Texas A&M steadily rises in the NET rankings after defeating No. 6 Tennessee

After demolishing No. 6 Tennessee, Texas A&M has once again risen the in NET rankings.

Texas A&M (15-8, 6-4 SEC) outrighted earned what many consider to be its most significant win of the season after defeating No. 6 Tennessee inside a packed Reed Arena, obliterating the visitors 85-69 on Saturday night.

Behind the stellar play of star guard duo Wade Taylor IV (25 points, seven assists) and  Tyrece “Boots” Radford (27 points, five assists), the Aggies are now one of the hottest teams in the SEC, while also ending the Volunteers’ five-game conference win streak.

So, how much did Saturday’s victory mean for Texas A&M concerning the NCAA Tournament? According to the latest NET rankings, the Aggies have risen nine spots from 47 to 38 while sitting above .500 in Quad 1 wins at 5-4. Also, after defeating Florida last Saturday, if the Gators continue their winning streak in SEC play, this victory will go down as a Quad 1 win toward the end of the month.

For the Aggies to continue this level of play down the stretch, Wade Taylor, and especially Tyrece Radford, who is responsive for A&M’s 12-1 record when he scores at least 20 points in a game, will need to continue attacking the basket and making their open shots from deep.

However, the Dennis Rodman-like rebounding performances from senior forward Andersson Garcia have been nothing short of game-changing, reeling in 33 boards in his last two contests. Lastly, sophomore Solomon Washington, who has stepped up in the absence of forward Julius Marble, is coming off one of his best games of the season after recording 11 points and seven rebounds.

This will take a collective team effort, and it looks like this squad is up to the task.

Texas A&M will return on the road to take on Vanderbilt on February 13 at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPNU.

Tar Heels stay put in NET rankings after close call against Miami

After escaping Miami with a 75-72 win on Saturday, the UNC men’s basketball team didn’t see its NET ranking outlook change.

UNC’s close call against Miami (75-72) on Saturday is the type of game that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but also the type of game that good teams find a way to win.

If it weren’t for Cormac Ryan’s clutch deflection and Armando Bacot’s discipline with his fourth foul, the mood might shift from relieved to concerned in Chapel Hill.

UNC head coach Hubert Davis cooked up a starter-heavy recipe, with four of five Tar Heel starters scoring in double-figures. RJ Davis led the way with 25 points – he shot just 6-of-19 from the field, but made all eight free throws.

With all that being said, North Carolina didn’t move a spot in the latest NET rankings.

Beating Miami by more could’ve improved UNC’s number, but it wouldn’t have been any drastic change. The Hurricanes, who were ranked earlier in the year, have drastically fallen off,

It makes me wonder that if North Carolina had beaten Clemson and Georgia Tech, it’d be higher in the NET rankings. The Tar Heels beat Duke, who is ranked ninth in the latest AP Poll.

Florida jumps up in NET rankings after big home win over Auburn

The Gators got an expected boost in the NET ranking following the big Saturday win.

Florida basketball brought its A-game to the O’Connell Center on Saturday and left with a commanding 81-65 victory over the highly-ranked Auburn Tigers. It was one of the most complete performances of the season for the Gators, highlighted by a super effort from their trio of guards.

The Orange and Blue jumped seven spots to No. 31 overall in the NET rankings after the Quadrant 1 win, putting them between the No. 30 Oklahoma Sooners and No. 32 Virginia Cavaliers — the latter of whom beat Florida on a neutral court earlier this season.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are now 2-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-0 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 7-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 4-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 16-7 record overall and a 6-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

Next up for the Gators are the LSU Tigers, who come to Gainesville to take on Florida inside the O’Connell Center on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Louisville loss drops Notre Dame to No. 6 seed in CBS bracketology

For one bracketologist, the Louisville loss was too much.

The hope after Notre Dame’s loss to Louisville was that the bracketologists would be a little forgiving. After all, the Irish had just played a tough team that is undefeated at home this season. While most bracketologists indeed looked past the defeat, one did not.

ESPN and Her Hoops Stats both updated their bracketologies Friday and kept the Irish as a No. 5 seed as they had previously. But Connor Groel of CBS Sports was not so charitable. He dropped the Irish to a No. 6 seed, only citing their No. 10 NET Ranking and No. 48 NET SOS. Both numbers are changes from No. 8 and No. 56 respectively from the previous bracketology updates.

Basically, what Groel is saying is that since the Irish’s SOS improved and their NET Ranking, it was time to give the Irish a lower seed. That means the Irish might already are falling further away from a top-four seed that would give them home-court advantage in the first two rounds of an NCAA Tournament. Plus, the margin for error has decreased, so the Irish might need to get it together sooner than they had hoped.

UNC basketball moves down in latest NET rankings going into weekend

The UNC basketball program dropped in the NET rankings following another loss to Clemson on Tuesday night.

The North Carolina Tar Heels have lost two of three after not suffering a loss going back to mid-December. After losing to Georgia Tech on the road, UNC bounced back to get a big win over rival Duke.

But the celebration didn’t last too long as UNC suffered a bit of a hangover, falling to Clemson at home on Tuesday. It was a bit of a shocking loss, a week after being upset to a bad Georgia Tech team.

The two losses have now dropped UNC out of a No. 1 seed on the latest Bracketology projections. But it’s also dropped them in the latest NET rankings as well.

The Tar Heels have fallen to No. 10 in the NET rankings that are updated daily. With a No. 10 ranking, UNC has a 5-4 record in Quad 1 games and a 4-1 record in Quad 2 games this season. They are a combined 9-0 in Quad 3 and 4 games.

The win to Duke did move up UNC but it wasn’t very high. And the losses to the Yellow Jackets and Tigers did hurt them.

The good news for the Tar Heels is that they have another Quad 1 opportunity this Saturday on the road against the Hurricanes. Miami is No. 68 in the rankings.

Florida still in NET rankings top 40 in bye week update

The Gators are off this week but have been in and out of the NET rankings top 40 following the TAMU loss.

Florida basketball is getting a breather this week after a tough 67-66 loss at the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday. The Gators have been grinding away at the Southeastern Conference schedule, working their way back into the NCAA Tournament picture.

The Orange and Blue fell three spots to No. 39 overall in the NET rankings after the loss and by Tuesday had fallen to No. 41. However, in Wednesday’s update, Todd Golden’s gang moved back up to No. 39, putting them between the No. 38 Texas Longhorns and No. 40 Boise State Broncos.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators remain 1-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-0 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 7-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 4-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 15-7 record overall and a 5-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

The Gators will return home to host the Auburn Tigers inside the O’Connell Center on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

How NET Rankings could determine if Notre Dame gets top-four seed

What do the Irish need to do to host NCAA Tournament games?

It’s been another good season for Notre Dame, and the NCAA Tournament is a certainty barring a complete collapse down the stretch. The latest Bracketology rankings have them as a fifth seed. But only the top four seeds in each quadrant get to be host schools for the first two rounds. That means if the forecasters were charged with creating the bracket today, there would be no postseason action in South Bend.

This raises the question of what it will take to get the Irish that coveted fourth seed. Figuring this out requires more analysis than I’m equipped to do, so I turned to my friend and World Series history podcast co-host Lucas Mitzel for help.

Lucas likes to crunch college sports numbers, particularly as they pertain to the programs for North Central College, our alma mater as well as that of Nick Shepkowski, our site’s editor. I asked Lucas to do this in relation to the Irish’s chances of getting to host tournament games. He had a very quick turnaround from the moment I asked him, which is perfect timing given the gauntlet the Irish are about to face.

While these aren’t comprehensive figures for what the Irish need to get a fourth seed, this analysis does place a heavy emphasis on NET, the tournament selection criteria system that replaced RPI for the women a few years ago. So with that in mind, here is Lucas’ interpretation of where the Irish are at:

Tar Heels stand pat in latest NET rankings after huge win over Duke

A loss to Georgia Tech hurt, but a huge win over Duke helped the UNC men’s basketball program big-time. Where is UNC in the NET rankings?

It feels like Christmas morning in Chapel Hill right now.

Why, might you ask?

The UNC men’s basketball team is fresh off an important, 93-84 victory over arch-rival Duke (16-5, 7-3) on Saturday evening, a game in which UNC (18-4, 10-1) largely dominated throughout. The Blue Devils made it close late, cutting their deficit to single digits in the final two minutes, only for North Carolina star Armando Bacot to later cement the win with a thunderous dunk.

With their victory, the Tar Heels extended their ACC lead to two games. If Duke had won last night, it’d only be trailing UNC by half-a-game.

The NET rankings also updated after games yesterday, with North Carolina staying put at ninth.

Losing to Georgia Tech on Tuesday certainly hurt UNC’s spot in the NET rankings, but Saturday’s win against the Blue Devils likely kept UNC in the Top 10.

North Carolina has four winnable games coming up – Clemson (Tuesday, Feb. 6), Miami (Saturday, Feb. 10), Syracuse (Tuesday, Feb. 13) and Virginia Tech (Saturday, Feb. 17) – before heading to UVA on Saturday, Feb. 24 for a showdown between the ACC’s top two teams.

Losing any of their first four upcoming games would likely further hurt the Tar Heels in the NET rankings, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

If UNC plays like it did Saturday, I smell another winning streak incoming.

Florida falls but still in NET rankings top 40 after TAMU loss

The Gators are still among the top 40 in the NET but lost some ground after the loss.

Florida basketball’s late-game woes finally caught up with it again on Saturday afternoon in College Station, where the Texas A&M Aggies outlasted the Gators, 67-66. It was yet another game that the Gators had late lead that disappeared before the end of regulation.

As a result of the Quad 1 loss, the Orange and Blue fell three spots to No. 39 overall in the NET rankings, putting them between the No. 38 South Carolina Gamecocks and the No. 40 Washington State Cougars.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are now 1-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-0 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 7-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 4-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents.
