Tar Heels climb up Top 10 in NET after beating UVA

After Saturday’s long-awaited win at UVA, the UNC men’s basketball team helping its NCAA Tourney seeding case and spot in the NET rankings.

After searching for defensive answers over the past six games, the UNC men’s basketball finally found them on Saturday afternoon at UVA.

North Carolina built an ugly, 10-point halftime lead and held the host Cavaliers to just a 5-of-30 mark in the first half. UVA started shooting the ball a bit better in half two, but the Tar Heels were locked in en route to a 54-44 victory – their first in Charlottesville since Feb. 25, 2012.

Neither team shot the ball well, with both UNC (21-6, 13-3) and UVA (20-8, 11-6) making 16 shots apiece. North Carolina finished 32 percent from the field, while the Cavaliers shot a horrendous 27.6 percent. Despite the Tar Heels’ poor shooting mark, Cormac Ryan enjoyed yet another strong outing, making six 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 18 points.

With its major win, first-place UNC rose up to ninth in the latest NET rankings. North Carolina is sandwiched between Iowa State (eighth) and Creighton (10th), both of whom are expected to make deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels certainly helped their case for a higher seed with yesterday’s win, as they were projected to a third. If UNC can win out, capping its regular-season off with a sweep of Duke, there’s potential to rise further up the NET and maybe re-snatch a top seed in the Big Dance.

Florida loses spot in NET rankings despite win over Vanderbilt

The Gators earned an easy win on Saturday afternoon but it was not enough hold ground in the NET rankings.

Florida basketball got back on the winning track inside the O’Connell Center on Saturday afternoon with a 77-64 triumph over the visiting Vanderbilt Commodores. The Gators are now 19-8 and 9-5 in Southeastern Conference play.

Despite the home win, the Orange and Blue fell a spot to No. 31 overall in the NET rankings. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 30 TCU Horned Frogs and No. 32 Florida Atlantic Owls.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 4-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 2-1 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 7-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold an 18-8 record overall and an 8-5 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

The one Quad 2 loss represents the misstep at the Ole Miss Rebels on Jan. 10, who fell outside of the Quad 1 zone from No. 68 to No. 76.

The Gators remain in the O’Connell Center for their next game against the visiting Missouri Tigers, who come to town on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is slated for 6:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

CBS Sports moves Notre Dame back to No. 5 seed in latest bracketology

Five is the number of the day.

At least for the moment, the Notre Dame women’s basketball team has gotten back on track. After winning its past two games against Duke and Clemson, it has a NET Ranking of 10th and an SOS of 30th. That’s good enough for CBS Sports to move the Irish back to a fifth seed in its latest bracketology after listing them six for the past two weeks.

That means between ESPN, College Sports Madness and Her Hoop Stats, the Irish are a unanimous pick for a No, 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. So basically, not a lot has changed with the forecasters. That’s not good if the Irish are hoping to improve to a fourth side, and time is running out to make a case for that. They’ll need to be at least one of Virginia Tech and Louisville to have a chance.

We know the Irish can be better, but they just haven’t been able to take that extra step. Maybe that will change with the regular season winding down.

UNC one of seven ACC hoops teams in NET Top 60

Seven ACC hoops teams are in the Top 60 of the latest NET rankings. Can you guess where the Tar Heels sit?

Saturday is going to be a day full of highly-anticipated, marquee college basketball matchups that carry massive implications.

Several games to watch include a ranked Big 12 battle between Houston and Baylor, a significantly-improved Wake squad hosting eight-ranked Duke in a battle that could determine the ACC’s first-place team, Alabama and Kentucky battling between ranked SEC teams and – the one we hope you’re watching the closest – 10th-ranked North Carolina traveling to UVA, where it hasn’t won in over a decade.

We’ll talk more about the Tar Heels in a second, but let’s not discount the fact that – despite UNC and Duke being the only two ranked ACC teams, seven conference programs are Top-60 in the latest NET rankings.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C3rK46SNjez/

That’s right – North Carolina leads the way at 10th, despite its recent hot-and-cold stretch. Duke is rightfully close to the Tar Heels at 12th, Clemson stands at 26th, Wake Forest jumped 10 spots to 27th, UVA sits at 48th, Virginia Tech rose 10 spots to 52nd after its huge win over UVA, while Pitt rounded out the ACC’s share of Top-60 teams at 58th.

There’s still two weeks left in the regular season and the ACC Tournament, which could drastically change these team’s NCAA Tournament outlook, but all seven being in the Top-60 of NET means there’s likely to be several ACC teams in the Big Dance.

Florida’s position in NET rankings unchanged after Alabama loss

The Gators are still a top-30 team in the NET rankings after the OT road loss against Alabama.

It looked like Florida basketball was going to pull off the upset on the road against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Wednesday night. But after being knotted up at the end of 40 minutes of play, the Gators simply did not have enough to keep up with the high-flying Tide in the end.

As a result of the road loss, the Orange and Blue remained at No. 29 overall in the NET rankings. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 28 Texas Tech Red Raiders and No. 30 Utah State Utes.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 2-8 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 4-0 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 7-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 5-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold an 18-8 record overall and an 8-5 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

The Gators return home on Saturday, Feb. 24, to host the Vanderbilt Commodores inside the O’Connell Center. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

How Notre Dame still can earn a top-four seed in NCAA Tournament

It’s doable.

Notre Dame is running out of chances to strengthen its NCAA Tournament resume. Every bracketology currently has the Irish as a No. 5 or No. 6 seed, which is bad if they want to host the first two rounds. Recent losses to Louisville and NC State haven’t helped, and their most recent wins have done little more than keep their needle where it is.

The Irish currently have an NET Ranking of 10th and a NET SOS of 25th. Their next two opponents are lowly ones in Clemson and Boston College, so while it’s important that they win those games, they won’t help their resume. All eyes will be on their last two regular-season games against ACC-leading Virginia Tech and Louisville, which have respective NET Rankings of 14th and 23rd.

So what does this mean for the Irish’s ever-decreasing chances to gain a No. 4 seed or better for March Madness? As I have a couple of times already, here’s what my friend Lucas Mitzel had to say while also giving out some additional NET Rankings:

UNC Basketball jumps two spots in latest NET rankings

The NET rankings, crucial in determining a team’s NCAA Tournament seeding, were kind to the UNC men’s basketball team after Saturday’s win.

After a mid-week letdown against Syracuse, Saturday was just the type of game UNC’s men’s basketball team needed.

The Tar Heels played a complete, well-rounded game in a 96-81 victory over Virginia Tech, maintaining their slim, half-a-game lead over Duke in the ACC. North Carolina didn’t have one – but two – players scoring 20 points. Armando Bacot continued his smoking tear, recording yet another double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while RJ Davis dropped a casual 20-piece.

UNC head coach Hubert Davis actually played his bench more, as Seth Trimble (21 minutes) and Jalen Washington (10) each saw the court for a decent time. Jae’Lyn Withers enjoyed an impressive outing, scoring four points in just nine minutes, while Paxson Wojcik played three minutes.

With all that being said, the Tar Heels rose two spots in the latest NET rankings.

Recent bracketology projections now have UNC as a 3-seed in the NCAA Tournament, so this rise is certainly helpful. There are four teams for each of the 1-16 seeds, so nine in the NET would put North Carolina as the Big Dance’s top 3-seed.

If the Tar Heels can heat up again and win out, there’s a solid chance they could move into the two or 1-seed range.

As a result of the road win, the Orange and Blue rose to No. 29 overall in the NET rankings. Todd Golden’s team sits between the No. 28 Clemson Tigers and No. 30 Utah State Utes, and it is officially a Quadrant 1 team.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

Tar Heels drop just one spot in which rankings after Syracuse loss?

Losses to unranked teams hurt in the rankings. Surprisingly, UNC’s Tuesday loss to Syracuse didn’t drop it that many spots in the NET.

Losing to an unranked team, no matter how good it might be, is typically followed by a fall down the rankings.

One of those such losses came on Tuesday night in The Empire State, when 7th-ranked UNC (who is surely to drop out of Top 10 next Monday) fell to unranked Syracuse. This was North Carolina’s third loss in its last five games, turning a once-NCAA Tournament favorite into just another team.

The next AP Poll won’t come out until Monday, but it’s not too early to start guessing how many spots teams will rise and fall. The Tar Heels now have six losses – not bad, but definitely not how many a top seed would have.

In the latest NET rankings, which are largely used to help determine a team’s NCAA Tournament seeding, UNC dropped just one spot to 11th.

North Carolina is largely helped out by its tough non-conference schedule, which includes games against ranked teams in Tennessee and Kentucky. Playing Duke once already helps, while the Tar Heels also dealt Oklahoma its first loss in December.

Plain and simple – UNC needs to beat Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon. A win likely won’t boost North Carolina’s rankings, as the Hokies are 60th in the NET, but it’ll reassure Tar Heel Nation.

Florida stands pat in NET rankings following LSU victory

The Gators come in at No. 33 in the NET rankings after a the LSU win, which is the same as yesterday but down two spots from after the Auburn win.

The Florida Gators almost gave up the game on Tuesday night, allowing the LSU Tigers to recover from a 20-point deficit to tie the game late, only to fall short on the final shot inside the O’Connell Center. Still, a win is a win.

The Orange and Blue remained at No. 33 overall in the NET rankings immediately after the victory but fell two spots from our last update. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 32 Oklahoma Sooners and No. 34 Mississippi State Bulldogs, the latter of whom Florida beat at home earlier this season.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are now 2-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-0 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-0 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 4-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 17-7 record overall and a 7-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play.

Golden and the Gators next travel to Athens for a rematch with the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tipoff is slated for an early 1 p.m. start and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
