Podcast: Why were the Patriots quiet amid a chaotic trade deadline?

Was doing nothing the right move for the Patriots? Ryan O’Leary and Jordy McElroy weigh in on this week’s Patriots Wire Podcast.

It was sugar and rainbows for the New England Patriots in Week 8, following their 22-17 road win over the New York Jets. Not only did they beat a tough division rival, but they managed to do so with no quarterback controversy.

However, for some, the rumbles of thunder and jolts of lightning crept back into the picture after seeing coach Bill Belichick do absolutely nothing at the trade deadline.

The likelihood of the Patriots being buyers was always going to be low, but they weren’t even sellers, despite reportedly receiving calls on the availability of Isaiah Wynn, Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne and Damien Harris.

In this week’s episode of the Patriots Wire Podcast, Ryan O’Leary and I recap the win over the Jets, the upcoming game against the Colts and coach Bill Belichick standing pat at the trade deadline.

Potential destinations and trade packages for Nelson Agholor

Here are some potential trade packages for Nelson Agholor as the November 1 trade deadline looms.

The NFL trade deadline is quickly approaching, and one of the top names from the Patriots being thrown around is Nelson Agholor, who is on the final year of his contract and is owed around $9 million this season.

When the Patriots traded for DeVante Parker, many thought it would spell the end for Agholor, who had a rough initial season statistically. Then the team selected young rookie Tyquan Thornton in the 2022 NFL draft and Agholor played his way onto the roster after a strong camp. The Patriots quickly had good depth at a position they have struggled to find talent at over the years.

Now that Thornton is healthy and the Patriots are in need of reps for the young rookie, Agholor could be a piece to move, and reports are already circulating that teams have been calling.

Here are some potential destinations and trade packages for the veteran receiver.

Potential wide receiver targets for Chargers following Mike Williams’ injury

Highlighting how the Los Angeles Chargers could address the wide receiver position during the bye week.

With Mike Williams set to miss multiple weeks with a sprained ankle, the Chargers have now sustained injuries to four of their top five receivers.

Keenan Allen returned for the first time since Week 1 against the Seahawks after a hamstring injury, Joshua Palmer missed the Seattle game with a concussion and has suffered multiple lower-body injuries, Jalen Guyton tore his ACL, and now Williams has an ankle injury.

While Allen and Palmer should be back for the Falcons game after the bye week, Los Angeles should still consider adding another gameday-ready piece to this room. I specify “gameday ready” because Odell Beckham Jr. is not on this list after recent reports that he will not be back from his ACL rehab until December.

Will Fuller (free agent)

Let’s start with the free agent pool, where the 28-year-old Fuller is still hanging out despite preseason reports that he was likely to sign sometime in August. Fuller was allowed to walk by Miami after last season, in which he missed Week 1 due to a PED suspension and broke his thumb in his second game. Injuries have been the story of Fuller’s career since joining the league in 2016, but it’s hard to argue with the prospect of 4.3 speed in an offense that currently has no defined deep threat (and hasn’t since Guyton went down). If Los Angeles wants to get splashy and feels they need to give someone new to the system extra time to get acclimated, this would be the time to pick up the phone.

John Ross (free agent)

Ross is another burner whose free agent market was rumored to be active enough that he would catch on by Week 1, only to remain available for the entire season to date. Ross did work out with the Cardinals last week but left the facility unsigned. Much like Fuller, the story of Ross’ career has been marred with injuries, namely recurrent shoulder and knee injuries during his time in Cincinnati. The workout with Arizona confirms that Ross is ready to go, making him another potential flier candidate if the Chargers are looking for a speedster. Ross also has kick return experience, which could prove useful considering DeAndre Carter’s ineffectiveness in that role and growing offensive snap count.

Dede Westbrook (free agent)

Westbrook worked out for a team as recently as the 25th in Miami, but the Dolphins ultimately decided to sign rookie Calvin Jackson from the tryout instead. The 28-year-old is familiar with Ryan Ficken, having served as Minnesota’s primary punt returner last season while Ficken was special teams coordinator. Many of the Chargers’ injuries have come on special teams this season: Joshua Kelley and Chris Rumph have been knocked out for multiple games and Drue Tranquill missed part of the Seahawks game with a minor injury on the punt team. That could create motivation to move Carter out of a full-time special teams role if he’s being asked to carry a bigger load on offense after the bye. Westbrook is a natural fit for those special team snaps and ran a 4.39 40 coming out of Oklahoma, making him a good candidate for the deep-threat role.

Marquez Callaway (Saints)

Brandon Staley and his staff preach continuity, a big reason why the Chargers haven’t made any moves that affect anything but the end of the roster since the season started. If that’s the case, perhaps Los Angeles targets a receiver familiar with Joe Lombardi’s system, like Callaway, who played his rookie season in New Orleans while Lombardi was QB coach. Callaway is cheap (a new team would owe him less than $500,000 for this season) and falling down the Saints’ depth chart with the emergence of rookies Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed. Flipping their WR5 or 6 for a late-round pick could be enticing for the Saints, especially with Callaway set to hit restricted free agency this offseason.

KJ Hamler (Broncos)

Hamler and teammate Jerry Jeudy have been the subject of trade rumors for a while now because of their declining usage in the Russell Wilson offense, which has only targeted Courtland Sutton and tight ends this season. I don’t think Jeudy is necessarily a realistic option for the Chargers; he’s more of an intermediate route runner, who is due a fifth-year option in 2024 that would inflate the Chargers’ WR bill to unprecedented heights. Hamler, however, could be an intriguing addition as a deep-threat piece still on a rookie contract. Denver is rumored to have at least listened to offers on Hamler, and I doubt it would cost more than a Day 3 pick unless the Broncos crank up the intradivisional tax.

Kendrick Bourne/Nelson Agholor (Patriots)

Both Bourne and Agholor seem expendable with the way Jakobi Meyers, DeVante Parker, and rookie Tyquan Thornton have been playing for New England. Both are relatively cheap for veterans: a new team would owe Agholor the remainder of his $9.8 million salary (roughly $5.4 million) and would owe Bourne the remainder of his $5 million salary (about $2.8 million). Both are deep threats: Agholor averages 12.7 yards per catch in his career, Bourne 13.4. If I had to pick one, I’d personally lean toward Bourne, the cheaper option with more reliable hands, but either Patriot receiver would add a new dimension to this Chargers offense.

Chase Claypool (Steelers)

This one is extremely unlikely, but so was trading for Khalil Mack until it happened. Claypool and the Steelers seem philosophically opposed: the offense isn’t vertical enough to utilize his skill set correctly and Pittsburgh has two other stud receivers in Diontae Johnson and George Pickens. Yet Ian Rapoport of NFL Network has reported that Pittsburgh is unlikely to move 2020 second-rounder unless they’re blown away by an offer; compensation similar to the Christian McCaffrey trade has been rumored by other sources to be the asking price. I doubt Los Angeles is that desperate, but Claypool would come with a year and a half of team control and 4.4 speed at 6’4”. That’s a rare player build, and he’d work wonders in Los Angeles.

Quickly on two other targets with trade rumors swirling: trading for DJ Moore is simply not feasible. L.A. would owe their wide receiver room $65.7 million in 2023 if they traded for Moore. That’s more than 29% of the projected 2023 salary cap. Yes, wide receivers coach Chris Beatty coached Moore at Maryland. But getting him in powder blue is a pipe dream.

Similarly, Elijah Moore looks like his wish to be traded will go unfulfilled, with multiple sources reporting that the Jets have zero plans to trade their 2021 second-round pick. Moore is frustrated with his usage, a squabble that’s become public enough that the Jets sat him last week. Even so, expect Moore to remain in New Jersey for the time being.

3 keys to victory for Patriots vs Bears in Week 7

Three keys to victory for the Patriots-Bears Monday Night Football game.

The New England Patriots (3-3) take on the Chicago Bears (2-4) at Gillette Stadium in a Monday Night showdown between two 2021 first-round quarterbacks in Mac Jones and Justin Fields.

The Patriots can also expect to see their old friend, N’Keal Harry, who is making his season debut this week after landing on IR earlier this year.

The Bears currently have a plethora of holes on their roster, specifically in their offensive line, that has led to their struggles in the first six games of the season.

Without further ado, let’s get into the keys to the game for this week’s Monday Night Football matchup.

4 Patriots players could be on trade block before the deadline

Any one of these four players could be moved before the trade deadline

It’s that time of the year where New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick loves to partake in a little wheeling and dealing for both the present and the future.

The Patriots aren’t a complete catastrophe at 3-3, and there might even be hope for the team to go on a bit of a run in their next four games. So things could be quiet on the trade front with the team willing to keep what they have in hopes of making it to the playoffs for a second straight year.

But opportunity could come knocking with the temptation to move a player for another player, future draft assets or maybe even both. Today, we’re going to take a look at who could be on the block before the November 1 deadline and the probability of them being traded.

Trade interest reportedly heating up for two Patriots receivers

Will the Patriots make a move before the November 1 trade deadline?

Fans might not like the New England Patriots’ receiver situation, but there are clearly teams around the league eager to get their hands on at least two players on the roster.

In a round-up of trade conversations, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted the Patriots had received multiple calls from teams inquiring about the availability of wideout Kendrick Bourne.

Despite racking up the second-most receiving yards for the team in 2021, Bourne has experienced a considerable slump so far this season. At one point, he wasn’t even getting on the field, and he has yet to find the end zone.

Through six games, he only has 11 receptions for 156 yards. And yet, according to Fowler, the Patriots have leaned towards keeping him on the roster.

Fowler wrote:

“Multiple teams have called the New England Patriots about wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, a talented run-after-catch guy with a reasonable $3.5 million salary. The Patriots have been inclined to keep him, but teams have a few weeks to change their minds.”

It shouldn’t be hard to pique the interest of coach Bill Belichick with the right offer. He just loves wheeling and dealing at this time of the season.

It isn’t just Bourne receiving trade interest, either.

According to Fowler, Nelson Agholor’s name is also coming up in trade conversations. The Patriots have been banged up at the receiver position, and with the team finally getting back to .500 win percentage, they might be better off keeping their roster intact for a possible playoff run.

However, Agholor, who is playing on an expiring deal, would be the most likely trade candidate considering Bourne is still under contract for the 2023 season. The fact that Bourne could return with a cap hit of less than $7 million should also be enticing for a Patriots team that could lose Jakobi Meyers in free agency.

The struggling wideout could still very much factor into the Patriots’ future plans.

3 standout stars for Patriots’ Week 6 win over Browns

Here are the three standout stars for the Patriots this week in their win over the Browns.

The New England Patriots took care of business in Cleveland with a 38-15 thrashing of the Browns. We’re not going to talk about how close the game was to flipping at the end because that doesn’t matter anymore.

Nope. Don’t even ask about it.

With this win, the Patriots improved to 3-3 and will take on the 2-4 Chicago Bears at Gillette Stadium on Monday Night Football. Mac Jones has a chance to return for that game, but for now, let’s take a look at the standout stars from Week 6.

The Morning After: Win in Cleveland sets Patriots up for run

The Patriots have positioned themselves to go on a run with Mac Jones close to returning

The New England Patriots improved to 3-3 with a 38-15 victory over the Cleveland Browns with rookie Bailey Zappe leading the way for the second straight week.

Zappe had the best game of his early career throwing 24-of-34 for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Many expect starter Mac Jones to return next week against the 2-4 Chicago Bears and second-year QB Justin Fields on Monday Night Football. With Jones possibly ready to return next week and Zappe showing command leading the Patriots to two straight wins, there could be room for speculation if the Patriots want to ride the hot hand, especially considering how Jones struggled early in the 2022 season.

However, I believe this is Jones’ team, and the reason for the early struggles was new play-callers and a new offensive line scheme that was going through some growing pains.

Jones should return just as this offense is clicking and will be ready to take this team on a run as the Patriots find themselves with some favorable matchups over the next month. Zappe was incredible and proved to be a great selection for what his role is; an emergency backup/spot starting quarterback for when the franchise QB is forced to miss time.

Patriots rule out two more key starters ahead of Browns game

Injuries continue to pile up for the Patriots

The New England Patriots got some bad news on both sides of the ball on Saturday. Cornerback Jonathan Jones and wideout Nelson Agholor have both been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Jones has been one of the team’s best defenders, and his absence could obviously cause issues in the defensive backfield.

The team has been fortunate to see the immediate impact that rookie corner Jack Jones is having on the field, and they’ll be hopeful that his presence, combined with Jalen Mills (questionable)—and maybe even some Marcus Jones—can help keep the unit afloat.

Perhaps Cleveland being such a run-heavy team will help the Patriots absorb some of the blow from losing Jones this week.

As for Agholor, his absence will likely mean more work for rookie receiver Tyquan Thornton, who returned last week from a collarbone injury.

Thornton only caught two passes for seven yards in his regular season debut against the Detroit Lions, but he managed to beat coverage pretty consistently.

We’ll see if the Patriots can get him going in a week where the Browns will be without two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward and professional game-wrecker Jadeveon Clowney.

Way too early look at where things stand with the Patriots’ impending 2023 free agents

Here’s a way too early look at where things stand with the Patriots’ impending 2023 free agents

Although the New England Patriots’ season is far from over, it’s always important to look ahead to the future, and the team currently has 20 free agents slated for 2023, with cornerback Myles Bryant being the only one restricted.

The Patriots went on a major spending spree in the 2021 offseason and are currently projected to have a little over $54 million to spend. However, there are some players on this list they’ll need to pay for.

Let’s take a look at their projected contracts and which players will most likely hit the open market in the spring.
