Nebraska Volleyball to participate in Big Ten media days

Nebraska Volleyball has announced their participants for Big Ten media day.

Nebraska Volleyball has announced their participants for Big Ten media day. Head coach John Cook and team captains Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez will be at the Big Ten Network Headquarters in Chicago on Tuesday for Big Ten Volleyball media days.

The Huskers will meet with the media from 2:40 PM to 3:00 PM, and it will be streamed on B1G+. Nebraska will host their first official practice on Tuesday, August 8, with the Red-White Scrimmage set for Saturday, August 19.

The Husker will also face Nebraska-Omaha at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, August 30, in what is being known as Volleyball Day in Nebraska. That day Wayne State will also play Nebraska-Kearney in the Lincoln-based event.

Husker volleyball player named preseason All-Big Ten

A Nebraska volleyball player was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.

A Nebraska volleyball player was named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Junior Lexi Rodriguez was one of three players unanimously selected to the team by the league’s 14 head coaches.

The Huskers were also picked to finish second in the conference. Wisconsin was selected to win the Big Ten this season.

Rodriguez is a two-time All-American and All-Big Ten selection. She was also a Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the AVA National Freshman of the Year in 2021.

In 2022, Nebraska finished with a record of 26-6 overall and 16-4 in the conference. They ended the season with a Regional loss to Oregon in five sets.

The Nebraska volleyball team added a commitment to its 2025 recruiting class earlier in the week.

The Nebraska volleyball team added a commitment to its 2025 recruiting class earlier in the week. Ryan Hunter of Mallard Creek High School out of Charlotte, North Carolina, made the announcement on Thursday.

PrepDig ranks Hunter as the No. 3 right-side hitter and the No. 35 overall in the 2025 class. She is the fourth commitment to the class of 2025, following setter Campbell Flynn, Keri Leimbach, and the No. 6 overall recruit Teraya Sigler.

Last season she led the team with 338 kills, 163 digs, 72 aces, 54 blocks, and 17 assists. Nebraska is coming off a successful recruiting offseason as the class of 2023 was ranked as the No. 1 class in the nation.

Husker NIL Collective receives $5 million gift for volleyball student-athletes

A Nebraska Name, Image, and Likeness Collective has received a $5 million gift to benefit Husker student-athletes.

A Nebraska Name, Image, and Likeness Collective has received a $5 million gift to benefit Husker student-athletes. The 1890 Initiative announced the partnership with the Nebraska Crossing outdoor lifestyle center and JUSTDATA.

It has been reported that the deal is specifically set to benefit Nebraska volleyball. Head volleyball coach John Cook called the gift a game-changer. 

“Thank you to the Nebraska Crossing team for this generous gift to the 1890 in support of Husker Volleyball. Your vision for NIL is a game changer for Husker Volleyball and will propel our program for years to come.”

The $5 million will spread out over the next ten years and will support NIL for Husker Volleyball student-athletes. The deal between the two sponsors and the NIL collective will be the first of many, as JUSTDATA states that they “look to remake college athletics by leveraging financial technologies.”

JUSTDATA has also publicly stated that they are currently negotiating with the top 25 collegiate athletics programs in the country.

Nebraska volleyball has a creative strategy for breaking the NCAA attendance record

The Cornhuskers are jumping on the outdoor sports trend with a record-setting attendance in mind.

The five-time national champion Nebraska volleyball team plans to add another accolade to its collection in the form of the sport’s NCAA attendance record this fall, and that plan involves jumping on the outdoor sports trend.

On Aug. 30, the Cornhuskers will be leaving the confines of their arena to play Nebraska-Omaha at the football team’s Memorial Stadium. The attendance record for an NCAA volleyball match is currently 18,755, which was set in 2021.

Memorial Stadium seats more than 85,000, so a sizable representation would easily set the record.

Nebraska is turning it into a big event in hopes of driving up attendance. The university described it in a release as a celebration of the impact of volleyball on the state of Nebraska, and it will feature an exhibition matchup between in-state Division II programs and a performance from a “national recording artist” who is yet to be determined.

We’ve seen a recent push for indoor sports to experiment with playing outdoors — particularly in hockey with the NHL’s Stadium Series. It would be cool to see college volleyball expand on this trend, perhaps as other teams attempt to chase the record that the ‘Huskers are likely to break this fall.

Husker Head Volleyball Coach Wins 800th Games

A big night at the Devaney Center!

A milestone was reached last night for Nebraska volleyball. John Cook won his 800th Career game as a collegiate head volleyball coach. Cook defeated Michigan State in straight sets at the Devaney center on Friday evening to improve their team record to 9-1 on the young season. Cook has coached at Nebraska since 2000, and during that time, he has won four NCAA national championships, four Big Ten regular season championships, and nine Big 12 regular season championships. Cook has 639 wins as the head coach of the Cornhuskers. He spent seven seasons as the head coach of Wisconsin before arriving in Lincoln. He was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2017.

Creighton-Nebraska women’s volleyball match sets NCAA record for attendance

Everyone was in the building for Creighton-Nebraska women’s volleyball.

Women’s volleyball in the state of Nebraska is about as good as it gets.

Every year, the Cornhuskers, of Lincoln roll out one of the best teams in all of the NCAA, as evidenced by their five national championships (tied for third-most in the sport). Meanwhile in Omaha, Creighton has also become a mainstay in the Top 25 over the years. And when you put the two in-state rivals on the same court, you get some seriously high-level volleyball.

What you also get when the two teams link up is an amazing turnout. Wednesday’s match, in which the No. 2 Huskers outlasted the No. 17 Bluejays in five sets, nearly filled up the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

The attendance? An NCAA women’s volleyball record-setting regular-season crowd of 15,797.

The attendance of nearly 16,000 is on par with both schools’ men’s basketball programs.

Per NCAA, Creighton’s 16,611 average fans per men’s basketball home game in 2022 ranked sixth in the nation, while Nebraska’s 15,283 came in at tenth.

Nebraska volleyball is 19-0 all-time against Creighton in its yearly rivalry game.

Social Media reacts to Nebraska Volleyball’s win over Creighton

The Huskers improve to 6-0 with the victory.

The No. 2 ranked University of Nebraska Volleyball team defeated Creighton in five sets (25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 15-9) in front of 15,797 fans at the CHI Health Center on Wednesday night. That number is a new NCAA attendance record for a regular-season volleyball match surpassing the previous record of 14,022, which Nebraska and Creighton had previously set in 2018.

With the win, Nebraska improves to 6-0 on the season and will prepare for a Saturday afternoon matchup against Long Beach State at the Devaney Center with a 3:00 pm start time. The Huskers will not start conference play until September 23rd, when they host Michigan State in Lincoln. Nebraska is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation behind the Texas Longhorns.

Nebraska Volleyball opens 2022 season with a victory in Lincoln

The No. 1 team in the country took care of business on Friday afternoon.

The No. 1 volleyball in the country opened up the 2022 season style with a straight-set victory on Friday afternoon. The Huskers defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi at the Devaney by a score of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-9. This game was the first of three that Nebraska will play this weekend during the Ameritas Players Challenge on the University of Nebraska campus in Lincoln. The Cornhuskers will still play Tulsa (Friday afternoon) and Pepperdine (Saturday afternoon). With Friday’s early afternoon victory, Nebraska is no 41-7 all-time in season openers, including 19-4 under head coach John Cook. Every match this weekend in Lincoln is being streamed on B1G+, and Friday night’s game against Tulsa will air on Nebraska Public Media.

Now the Cornhuskers reload and reset with two games this afternoon at the Devaney Center. Nebraska starts the season No. 1, just edging out Texas for the top spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
