Nebraska at Michigan State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Nebraska Cornhuskers at Michigan State Spartans odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (6-8, 0-3 Big Ten) visit the No. 10 Michigan State Spartans (12-2, 3-0) for a Big Ten battle in East Lansing, Mich., Wednesday. The contest at the Breslin Center is slated for a 7 p.m. ET tip. Below, we look at the Nebraska vs. Michigan State odds and lines and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Nebraska is coming off a Sunday overtime loss against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Cornhuskers shot 41.5% from the floor: in seven games since Dec. 1 they have failed to shoot 43% in a game six times. Nebraska lost all six of those games; they are 1-6 since Dec. 1.

The Spartans have lost just a pair of games this season, both neutral-site affairs — against Kansas and Baylor, the current No. 6 and No. 1 teams in the nation. The Baylor loss was Nov. 26; Michigan State has won seven straight games since. Over those seven in a row, MSU has shot 44.0% from 3-point range while holding opponents to a 40.1% mark on all field goals.

Nebraska at Michigan State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 86, Nebraska 70

Money line

STEER CLEAR of the pricey straight-up tags.

Against the spread

The Cornhuskers are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games against teams playing .600 ball at home. The favorite is 6-2 ATS in the last eight games in this series.

The Spartans figure to have a monster rebounding edge in what settles into a fast-paced game. And Nebraska struggles in defending the perimeter: that spells problems against an MSU five draining triples at a high clip of late.

The last time MSU faced a team outside the top-100, the Spartans struggled in putting away High Point Dec. 29. Look for a more complete game-control effort in this conference game.

TAKE MICHIGAN STATE -15.5 (-120).

Over/Under

The ‘Huskers allowed 88 points against Ohio State. They have allowed more than 70 in nine of their 14 games this season. Look for Michigan State to reel in 85-plus in this one.

TAKE THE OVER 150.5 (-107).

Nebraska at Michigan State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Nebraska Cornhuskers at Michigan State Spartans odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (2-2, 0-1 Big Ten) and No. 21 Michigan State Spartans (3-0, 1-0) kick-off at 7:00 p.m. ET this Saturday at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan. Below, we look at the Nebraska at Michigan State odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings according to the AFCA Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Michigan State has navigated the early part of its schedule with ease, going 3-0 with a marquee win at Miami (38-17) last week. RB Kenneth Walker III has been nearly unstoppable, rushing for 493 yards (8.6 yards per carry) with 5 TDs thus far. The Spartan defense hasn’t allowed more than 21 points in any of its first three games.

Nebraska has recovered from its embarrassing opening-week loss to Illinois, covering comfortably in each of its last three games. The Cornhuskers are coming off a near-upset as a 22.5-point underdog at No. 3 Oklahoma last week. Nebraska’s rushing defense ranks 81st in the nation (156.5 yards per game), which could be a problem against Michigan State’s balanced attack.

Nebraska at Michigan State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 31, Nebraska 23

Money line

The Spartans have the more impressive resume of these two teams, but at -205, you should target better odds against the spread and PASS on the money line.

Against the spread

While Nebraska has looked better of late, its only two wins this year are to Buffalo and FCS Fordham. Conversely, Michigan State has two Power 5 wins (Northwestern and Miami) and has covered the spread easily in both of those games.

Look for MICHIGAN STATE -4.5 (-108) to keep rolling here as Nebraska deals with a potential hangover effect after the near-win over Oklahoma last week.

Over/Under

Target the OVER 54.5 (-108) here as both offenses have been able to move the ball this year. Nebraska ranks 25th nationally in yards per game (481.3) and Michigan State is 14th (520.0), while both defenses are allowing 345+ yards per game so far.

Nebraska at Michigan State: Three things to know

  1. Both teams tote losing streaks into this game. Nebraska hasn’t won since Dec. 17; the Cornhuskers have lost five since. In a COVID-decimated schedule, the ‘Huskers have also had five games postponed. Nebraska hasn’t played since Jan. 10. Michigan State heads into Saturday’s home game having lost four in a row. MSU had three January postponements; the Spartans haven’t won since Jan. 5.
  2. These two teams met Jan. 2 in Lincoln, Neb. Nebraska played MSU tough, but the Spartans led the game for about nine minutes of play. And the ‘Huskers shot an uncharacteristic 49.1% to make the game as close as it was. UN has shot under 44% in 6 of 9 games since Dec. 1.
  3. Since its return to action after a 19-day COVID hiatus, Michigan State has lost three road games. MSU’s effective field-goal rate in away-neutral games is an anemic 42.4%. At home, the Spartans have logged a fine 55/1% figure.

Nebraska at Michigan State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan State 80, Nebraska 70

Money line (ML)

A LAYOFF IS SUGGESTED. These two have underlying analytics just too far gone with the impact of COVID postponements. There are decent signals on both; peg them as crossing and canceling.

Against the spread (ATS)

Nebraska is 4-7 ATS; Michigan State is 4-11. The favorite is 6-1 ATS in the last seven series meetings. If you want to swing that way, there is that. But 11-1/2 points in this situation is a lot. A PASS IS RECOMMENDED.

Over/Under (O/U)

The strength in this contest — but perhaps as a partial-unit play — is in the number. Both teams have shown some defensive liabilities; both can get to the line at a decent rate. MSU can get some quick put-back points; UN can counter with a strong turnover-transition game.

BACK THE OVER 145.5 (-110).
