Pitcher Brett Sears named Second-Team Academic All-American

Senior Brett Sears was named a second-team Academic All-American on Tuesday, adding to the All-American recognitions he received back in June.

A Nebraska pitcher became the first Husker baseball player to be named Academic All-American in eight years. Senior Brett Sears was named a second-team Academic All-American on Tuesday, adding to the All-American recognitions he received back in June.

Sears joined the Huskers after playing two seasons at Western Illinois and one year at Iowa Central Community College. He is the first Husker baseball player to be an Academic All-American since 2016. He is the first Nebraska player to be an All-American and Academic All-American in the same season since Aaron Marsden in 2003.

The Westphalia, Iowa, native is the 19th player in program history to be named an Academic All-American, increasing Nebraska’s total to 22 all-time. Sears finished the year with a 3.65 cumulative GPA while earning a degree in child, youth, and family studies.

The Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and first-team All-Big Ten honoree posted a 9-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 104 innings this season. Sears ranked among the national leaders throughout the season. The senior finished the year ranked fourth with a 0.88 WHIP, fifth in ERA (2.16), and 19th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.32).

The Big Ten Pitcher of the Year had a 9-1 record with a 2.16 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 104 innings. He also averaged a 0.88 WHIP and a 5.32 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Sears is the first Husker pitcher to record 100-plus strikeouts in a season since 2008. The 101 punchouts are the ninth-most in program history.

Sears’ honor is the highest by a Nebraska starting pitcher since Aaron Marsden in 2003. This is the fourth time the pitcher has been named an All-American, with the National Collegiate Baseball Writers, Perfect Game, and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings naming Sears an All-American.

Shortstop Billie Andrews named All-American

Shortstop Billie Andrews was named a NFCA Third-Team All-American earlier this week. 

A Nebraska softball player has been named an All-American. Shortstop Billie Andrews was named a NFCA Third-Team All-American earlier this week.

Andrews is the 10th two-time All-American in Nebraska history. This past season, she hit .383 with ten doubles, two triples, 18 home runs, and 45 RBIs. She led Nebraska in batting average, hits, extra-base hits, home runs, RBIs, runs, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.

The Gretna, Nebraska native was also a first-team All-American, a three-time all-region selection, and a four-time All-Big Ten member. Andrews was also Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2024 after being named the Husker Female Athlete of the Year in 2022.
