A grumpy college baseball umpire wouldn’t let a player admire his clutch grand slam

C’mon!

It feels like we say this a lot, but we’ll repeat it: home runs are fun. They should be celebrated by the hitters who send them over the walls and by fans.

This umpire who was manning home plate for Dallas Baptist vs. Oregon State didn’t see it that way.

Dallas Baptist’s Andrew Benefield stepped up to the plate in the seventh inning with his team down 5-2 and hit what would end up being the game-winning grand slam, but as he stood there to admire it — as he should! What a dinger! Enjoy it, Andrew! — the home plate umpire told him to hurry along.

C’mon! Don’t stamp all over his big moment!

PK Park is selected as one of the 16 regional sites for the NCAA baseball tournament

Oregon’s great season was rewarded Sunday night as the NCAA announced that Eugene would be an NCAA regional site for the baseball tournament.

Well, there it is.

After some speculation, the NCAA made it official by announcing that PK Park would be one of the 16 host sites for the regionals round of the NCAA tournament. Oregon baseball hasn’t hosted a regional since the 2013 season.

Who the other three teams are that will join the Ducks in Eugene to play for a trip to the Super Regional won’t be known until Monday morning when the NCAA announces the seedings. Arizona and Stanford were also named as regional sites.

But just getting to the tournament, let alone hosting a regional is quite the accomplishment for Mark Wasikowski in his first full season as the Duck coach. When he arrived on the scene, the Oregon program was in disarray as the Ducks went 27-29 overall, but just 10-19 in Pac-12 play in George Horton’s final season.

The Ducks played just 15 games in 2020 before the pandemic hit, so who knows where that team would have ended up at. But in 2021, Wasikowski turned Oregon around and nearly won the Pac-12 title, going 20-10 in conference action, just one game behind Arizona, and 37-14 overall.

Everyone will find out who will be going where Monday at 9 a.m. on ESPN2 when they televise the NCAA baseball selection show. In order for the Ducks to be a possible Super Regional site, Oregon will have to be one of the Top 8 seeds in the tournament field.

Texas is one of three Big 12 Schools listed as a potential NCAA regional host

Texas, TCU and Texas Tech are among the 20 finalists to potentially host the 2021 NCAA regionals.

The NCAA baseball postseason is only a few weeks away and on the path to Omaha, home of the NCAA World Series, are the 16 regional cities to host the first leg.

The NCAA Division 1 Baseball Committee announced their final 20 candidates that have the potential to host the 2021 Regionals and eight of those cities will host the subsequent Super Regionals.

Among the final 20 candidates, three Big 12 programs were included: Texas, Texas Tech and TCU.

The field of teams will consist of 64 programs, similar to the college basketball NCAA Tournament. There will be 30 conference qualifying teams and 34 at-large bids.

As far as fans in attendance, the NCAA’s COVID-19 Medical Advisory Board has allowed stadiums to up to 50% capacity at respective stadiums. The 16 chosen schools to host the regionals will be announced on May 30 at 8:30 p.m. EDT.

Regionals will run from June 4 through June 7 and the Super Regionals will take place from June 11 through the 14.

Five Texas baseball players who rank among the NCAA’s top 50

Five Texas Longhorn baseball players who rank nationally among statistical categories.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team is 30-8 on the season and continues to ride a 13-game winning streak. They’re currently ranked No. 3 nationally and sit atop the Big 12 with slight leads over Texas Tech and TCU.

The Longhorns look more and more like a squad who will be competing in Omaha for the NCAA College World Series. Just as impressive has been the play of many of their players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few of these Texas stars could be playing in the minor and major leagues in the coming years.

At the beginning of the season, all eyes were on pitcher Ty Madden and his elite strikeout numbers. More recently, the focus has shifted to Ivan Melendez, who had garnered attention after six consecutive games with a home run. Melendez eventually fell just short of tying the NCAA record at eight games.

Texas currently has five players among the top 50 in their respective statistical group, with a few others who are narrowly on the outside looking in. With 17 games left in the regular season, many of these numbers are likely to fluctuate.

Here are the five Texas players who rank among the the top 50 statistically via NCAA.com.

Where’s the love? UGA Baseball still unranked in major polls

The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team is being slept on by quite a few pollsters

Despite compiling an impressive 10-3 record to start the season, the Georgia baseball team has not cracked the top 25 in the D1Baseball or Baseball America’s polls.

To give the pollsters credit, the Bulldogs have played a relatively light nonconference schedule. Georgia will face much improved competition in a few weeks during SEC play, but its best win is Georgia State or Georgia Southern.

Georgia lost its top two starting pitchers, Emerson Hancock and Cole Wilcox, to the MLB draft last year, but it is still ranked No. 22 in the nation in team ERA. This includes teams from the Big Ten and Mid-American Conference who have only played 2-3 games as well.

Are the Dawgs being slept on? It sure seems like it …

The Gators of Florida fell a few spots to No. 7 after dropping back-to-back games against Miami, while the Bulldogs still have not cracked the Top 25.

Georgia started off slow with a season-opening loss to Evansville, but was able to rebound to win three-straight and take the series.

Up next for the Dawgs is a date with Georgia State on Wednesday in Atlanta before hosting Gardner-Webb for four games in Athens next weekend.
