Why NC State Will Win

The Wolfpack are surging just when they desperately need to.

They had to go on the road against Pitt and Wake Forest, they shot the lights out hitting well over half of their shots combined in the two victory, and now they have a shot to pull off something big to really show how much they’re surging.

They’re forcing a ton of mistakes, they’re doing good job at not screwing up, and again, they’re making everything. And on the flip side …

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia has lost two straight on the road and now it’s back at home where it still hasn’t dropped a game.

What was the problem against Florida State and Duke? The Cavaliers are making their shots, they haven’t been bad from there, but …

The defense has had big problems.

Uncharacteristically, they allowed FSU to shoot the lights out, and Duke couldn’t seem to miss on the inside and on the move. So what is any of this a positive? For this program, it’s fixable.

Virginia has to be stronger on the boards – especially on the defensive side – and they need to dominate on the offensive side against an NC State team that’s awful on the defensive boards.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State has the makeup to pull it off. To beat Virginia this year, you have to hit half of your shots from the field, and NC State can certainly do that.

You have to be able to limit your turnovers, and NC State can do that, too. However, NC State was fine shooting and only turned it over 11 times in the first game against the Cavaliers and lost by seven.

Virginia will stop the slide here and look the part again.

Why NC State Will Win

The defensive front is getting into the backfield. It might not be doing enough to keep teams from scoring at will, but the pressure is coming from all sides with the tackles for loss coming in bunches.

Virginia’s offense isn’t moving the chains – it’s struggling on third downs – and it’s struggling at not giving up the ball with five turnovers so far. NC State hasn’t lost a fumble and didn’t turn the ball over in the win over Pitt. The Pack have to be on the right side of the turnover battle, and Devin Leary has to keep playing well.

He took over the quarterback duties against Virginia Tech, and he came up big against Pitt with 336 yards and four scores. He’s going to have to keep pressing, because …

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia is dominating the time of possession battle. It’s not like that mattered against Clemson, but the team is able to control games by keeping the ball for almost 34 minutes so far.

However, the Cavalier offense has to take shots down the field.

Even though the NC State pass rush has been solid, the defense is getting hit for close to nine yards per throw, giving up four touchdowns passes with no picks, and having problems with Pitt last week allowing 411 yards.

Virginia might not be perfect, but it leads the ACC in fewest penalties, the offensive line is giving the backfield time to work, and QB Brennan Armstrong has been good enough, even if he’s not Bryce Perkins.

What’s Going To Happen

NC State isn’t going to play an uninteresting game.

Its offense has the pop to keep up the pace in shootouts, the defense can’t seem to stop anyone from scoring, and its three games so far have been a blast. This should be a good one, too.

Virginia is playing someone its own size. It was far better than Duke, far worse than Clemson, and at home, it’ll get into a back-and-forth fight with the defense coming up with two takeaways that NC State’s D won’t.

Virginia has been struggling recently but did snap a three-game losing skid by defeating Georgia Tech 63-58 in its last game. NC State has won its last two games, against Clemson and Miami, and has the same ACC record as Virginia at 4-3.

The defending National Champion Cavaliers are just missing too much production from last year’s squad to feel confident enough in a Virginia (-209) moneyline wager. They rank 351st in points per game, 348th in 3-point percentage and 316th in field-goal percentage. Given their recent history against the Wolfpack and in the ACC, I cannot justify an NC State (+170) bet, either.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The home team generally has the edge in these games—home teams are 5-1 against the spread in the last six NC State-Virginia meetings—but that was with a title-contending Cavaliers team. The 2019-20 Virginia Cavaliers aren’t that good. You’ve read their offensive plummet above and the following Virginia ATS trends are also alarming: Virginia is just 6-11 ATS on the season, including 3-7 ATS at home and 3-5 ATS at home against teams above .500.

Also, this game should remain close because the NC State senior backcourt of Markell Johnson and C.J. Bryce are itching to get their first win against Virginia before graduating.
