NC State commit Paul McNeil Jr. breaks a North Carolina state scoring record that stood for over seven decades

Paul McNeil Jr. sets a North Carolina scoring record.

You can’t hope to control Paul McNeil Jr. You can only hope to contain him.

That’s the takeaway from McNeil’s performance on Tuesday night, as the North Carolina State commit poured in 71 points for Richmond County (Rockingham, North Carolina). In fact, McNeil by himself outscored the opposition in the win by Rockingham.

The scoring output set a state record, best a mark that had been in place for nearly three-quarters of a century. The previous mark was 67 points set by Bob Poole of Clayton High School (Clayton, North Carolina).

Not surprisingly, Richmond County beat Lee County (Sanford, North Carolina) 118-52. With the win, Richmond County has won four straight games and is now 11-5.

A four-star guard, McNeil is ranked the No. 62 player in the nation by 247Sports. In the class of 2024, he is the seventh-highest-ranked recruit in North Carolina. He was a highly after recruit, with offers that included Alabama, Georgetown, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Missouri, St. John’s and Virginia Tech among others.

NC State’s DJ Horne flipped the double birds to referees with their backs turned during rowdy comeback win over Wake Forest

DJ Horne, probably: “What’s better than one bird? Two.”

NC State guard DJ Horne released some pent-up aggression (and possibly frustration) after a hard-fought game against Wake Forest on Tuesday. There’s just one problem. He took it out on a ref by flipping them double birds.

There was a lot happening in the matchup with NC State and Wake Forest. During the first half, after a no-call on a play that should have been called for a foul, NC State head coach Kevin Keatts was ejected for unleashing verbal fury on a nearby ref.  Then, after a huge second half where NC State erased a ten-point deficit to take the lead, things got really chippy down the stretch. There were so many technicals and more ejections — wild stuff.

NC State’s DJ Horne, whose 21-point night helped secure the team’s win, managed to get to the line for free throws as time was winding down. That’s when he decided to send a ref some — uh — nice parting gifts when they had their back turned.

(Warning: NSFW gestures.)

After the game, Horne apologized for his actions. However, it seems that his head coach was still a bit fired up so the attention from the game might not be dying down anytime soon. WHEW.

(Warning: NSFW language.)

Update: Horne has been “reprimanded” by the ACC for his behavior with no additional details provided from the conference.

Tar Heels down Wolfpack, remain undefeated in ACC play behind strong defensive effort

For the third straight game, UNC’s defense won it a basketball game. The Tar Heels held N.C. State to under 30 percent shooting tonight.

In the first half of Wednesday night’s UNC-NC State rivalry game, there was no clear victory in Round One of the season series.

Midway through the second half, one team started to pull away – fast.

UNC starting power forward Harrison Ingram took over the boards, pulling down 19 rebounds and leading a suddenly hot defense – that limited N.C. State to a 26.9 field goal percentage – in a 67-54 Tar Heel victory.

With its win, Carolina (12-3, 4-0) moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC.

Though Carolina’s (12-3, 4-0 ACC) defense took over, both teams locked down on ball-handlers and shooters. UNC shooting guard R.J. Davis led all scorers with 16 points, while Tar Heels point guard Elliot Cadeau and N.C. State big man DJ Burns were the only two starters to shoot 50 percent.

Carolina limited the Wolfpack, a team that likes to shoot 3-pointers plenty, to a horrendous 2-of-20 mark from deep. On Saturday, UNC limited Clemson to 1-of-18 shooting from the outside.

D.J. Horne, N.C. State’s leading scorer, shot just 2-of-16 from the field and 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

In the scoring department, which didn’t have a ton of fireworks, Carolina made the difference with an 18-8 edge in fastbreak points. You could argue that was the difference in tonight’s game, particularly late when UNC kept stealing the ball and getting easy layup opportunities.

Carolina held an opponent to under 60 points for the third straight game. For a team that forms its identity on fast-paced offense, it’s the defense that has UNC atop the ACC early in the New Year.

Player of the Game

If it’s not Harrison Ingram, the game was never played.

Ingram’s known more as a scorer, but he was a beast on the boards tonight. Ingram pulled down 19 rebounds, nine more than the next closest player (D.J. Horne).

His rebounding effort led UNC’s best defensive effort of the season.

What’s next?

Carolina hosts Syracuse on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 12 p.m. noon. The Orange (10-4, 1-2), who are playing Boston College tonight, have won five of their past six games.

UNC Basketball at NC State: Game preview, info, prediction and more

UNC-N.C. State football games are always highly-anticipated. On Wednesday night, both men’s hoops teams hope to stay unbeaten in ACC play.

It all goes down in Raleigh tomorrow night.

UNC and N.C. State, both tied atop the ACC basketball standings with Wake Forest at 11-3 (3-0 in conference play), will clash at 8 p.m.

Carolina is ranked seventh and has played a daunting non-conference schedule, winning games against strong programs like Tennessee, Oklahoma and Clemson. The Wolfpack are definitely turning heads, sitting ahead of teams like Duke and Miami, but their greatest win might be UVA.

Given the fact N.C. State is actually playing well this year, don’t be surprised to see PNC Arena packed in red.

If UNC has anything to say about about the Wolfpack faithful, it’ll look to utilize its up-tempo style and take the crowd out of it. It’s not just R.J. Davis or Armando Bacot scoring this year, but the Tar Heels also carry Harrison Ingram, Cormac Ryan, plus a mix of talented transfers and freshmen. They’re playing their best basketball to start a season in several years, leading many to believe they’re a Final Four-caliber team.

Something has to give Wednesday night. Will Carolina steal a win in front of a raucous Wolfpack crowd, or will N.C. State show it’s a legitimate ACC contender?

Let’s look at a couple things to be watching for in Wednesday’s matchup:

North Carolina-NC State still have the pettiest rivalry in sports and we love to see it

North Carolina is the Petty State.

On Sunday, the North Carolina State men’s basketball team defeated their in-state rival North Carolina, 77-69. It followed the NC State women’s team also topping North Carolina, 77-66, last Thursday.

As you could imagine, the pettiness between these two schools brewed anew. There has been documented frustration between the programs after North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye threw shade at people who went to NC State. The rivalry has bubbled up from time to time since then, with the teams engaging in a battle of petty sunglasses during interviews for some reason.

Well, the recent NC State sweep of North Carolina has sparked a trolling t-shirt line. If you’re a member of the Wolfpack, you might want to get in on one of these.

If pettiness is currency, then this rivalry will never feel the effects of a pettiness recession.

While North Carolina clearly has the more storied history in basketball, NC State gets to claim bragging rights until the two programs inevitably meet again. Goodness knows this rivalry won’t calm down anytime soon.

Twitter reacts to NC State shirts mocking UNC

Twitter reacts to NC State mocking UNC with shirts after their weekend win.

The North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State have taken their rivalry to new heights this season: trash talk has come from both sides.

The back and forth initially started during the football season when Drake Maye stated: “People who go to State just cannot get into Carolina.” The harmless remark ruffled feathers, resulting in Maye apologizing for the comment.

The saltiness carried over to the basketball program. NC State guard Terquavion Smith rocked shades while making this comment.
.
“I feel like other colleges in NC feel like they are better than us because they wear blue, but I just want people to know that you can come here, too. … They do the same stuff we do; they just have different courses.”

Following UNC’s 80-69 win over NC State in January, the response was brief: Armando Bacot rocked shades in the postgame interview. Since then, both teams’ trajectories have looked different.

UNC has struggled, and those struggles continued with NC State evening the season series Sunday with a 77-69 win over North Carolina. However, despite being 1-1 on the season with UNC, that did not stop the Wolfpack from producing shirts mocking North Carolina.

North Carolina has claimed for the longest that NC State is not its rival, but after this year’s events, you wonder if that tune will change. Regardless the shirts put Twitter in a frenzy,

Let us look at Twitter’s reaction to the shirts:

Jon Scheyer’s stunned look at Duke’s big deficit became an immediate meme

Things could not have started worse for the Blue Devils in Raleigh.

When former Duke star and assistant coach Jon Scheyer took over the helm after the departure of the legendary Mike Krzyzewski, he knew it would be a challenging role. We’re not sure he thought it would be as challenging as the first half against nearby rival N.C. State, however.

The Blue Devils started an absolutely atrocious 0-for-13 from the floor, turned the ball over four times and missed two free throws as they fell behind 15-0 to the Wolfpack. After finally getting on the board with a Mark Williams dunk 7:40 into the game, N.C. State answered with a three to make it 18-2.

As cameras panned to Scheyer on the bench, he was straight up not having a good time.

It became an instant meme.

UNC football offensive keys to the game vs N.C. State

Taking a look at the offensive keys to the game for the UNC football program against NC State.

The UNC football program is back on the field this Friday looking to get back on the right side of the win/loss column.

Following a disappointing and shocking loss to Georgia Tech last week, mainly due to the offensive performance, this game becomes even more critical heading into an ACC Championship fight with Clemson.

Any and all momentum the Tar Heels had this year would be taken away if they limp into the ACC title game.

N.C. State comes into this matchup on a two-game losing streak and have been bounced from the top-25 as well.

The Tar Heels can’t get caught looking ahead because this Wolfpack team is ready for this matchup.

Here are the offensive keys to the game for UNC.

Clemson vs NC State Game Preview, ACC Conference Tournament

Why Clemson Will Win

Clemson is playing well.

It collapsed in February in a rough run of six straight losses, but it bounced back better with four straight wins to maybe salvage its season if it can come up with a good weekend.

What happened and how have things improved?

The defense has turned it up a few notches. It didn’t allow fewer than 69 points in any game over a few weeks, and then it didn’t give up more than that over the last two weeks.

The rebounding has been great and the defense from three has been as strong as it’s been all year, and the timing is great because …

Why NC State Will Win

NC State isn’t playing well, but here come the threes.

Wake Forest is the only team in the ACC that showed more from beyond the arc, and it’s a strength in numbers thing. The Wolfpack are okay from the outside, but it’s more about the sheer quantity of shots – they’ve made 61 in the last six games.

They’ll work outside, but Clemson doesn’t have too much an interior presence – there aren’t any blocks – and the D as a whole doesn’t put enough pressure on the guards and doesn’t force enough mistakes, but …

Clemson vs NC State: What’s Going To Happen

Can NC State find something positive over a miserable season with a win to get another game to play? It’ll be feisty.

The problem is the defense that’s getting rocked by everyone. The Pack have allowed teams to hit 50% of their shots or more in eight of the last ten games, and now it’s Clemson’s turn to have some fun.

The Tigers will have to battle through a tough first 30 minutes, but the last ten will start to swing their way as the Pack D breaks down over and over again.
