Texas A&M needs to target newest portal addition, former NC State catcher Cannon Peebles

Another talented player has entered the transfer portal, as former NC State catcher Cannon Peebles needs to be the Aggies’ next portal target.

Another one! The college baseball transfer portal has continued to make waves this summer, and after former Clemson infielder Billy Amick announced his intention to enter the portal, fellow ACC star catcher Cannon Peebles has officially joined him.

Following a Tweet from D1 Baseball Managing Editor Kendall Rogers, Peebles, who was one of the top recruits out of the Virginia high school ranks, had by far one of the best seasons in the country as a true freshman, hitting .352, 12 home runs, and 50 RBI, including a .697 slugging percentage and a .456 on-base percentage in 39 games played.

From a team perspective, Peebles’ 50 RBI led the team, while his 12 home runs ranked second, again, all as a freshman. This season, the Wolfpacks’ run in the NCAA Tournament ended at the hands of Campbell in the Columbia, South Carolina Regional in an 11-2 loss, as Peebles’s short tenure with the program will surely be remembered for years.

So far this offseason, Austin Bost and Brett Minnich are the only players to depart so far, and head coach Jim Schlossnagle has continued to make significant additions, adding former Tarelton relief pitcher Zane Badmaev and former Michigan infielder and grad transfer Ted Burton, who will undoubtedly compete for starting and rotational spots in the lineup next season.

As many feel pitching depth should stay as the priority in the portal, pure hitters like Cannon Peebles don’t come along very often, and Texas A&M’s .270 team batting average last season is just not good enough if competing for a Championship is their primary goal in 2023.

Tigers drop game two 5-2 to Wolfpack, force Sunday rubber match for series

On Military Appreciation Day, Clemson came out with the bats rolling early, but were unable to get the job done in their 5-2 loss to No. 22 NC State, forcing a rubber match on Sunday. The Tigers came out quick in the first, tacking on a run and later tying the game 2-2 in the second, but outfielder Noah Soles ended up being the real difference maker for the Wolfpack, accounting for four of NC State’s five total RBIs in Saturday’s matchup.

Canaan Silver earns the win on the mound for NC State along with Chris Villaman earning the save. Clemson righthander Nick Hoffmann [3-3] tallies the loss.

Clemson was the first to strike in Saturday evening’s matchup. Following Cooper Ingle’s single to left field, Max Wagner sent an RBI double sailing down the right field line to put the Tigers up 1-0.

NC State quickly came up with their answer in the second, scoring their first two runs of the day with Noah Soles’ RBI single to first base along with Dominic Pilolli’s run scored on a Clemson throwing error.

The Tigers didn’t trail for long though, tacking on another run to tie it 2-2 in the second thanks to a solo shot to left field by Blake Wright, good for his fourth home run of the year. Wright led the Tigers at the plate on Saturday, going 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and an RBI.

Into the fourth, the Wolfpack brought in another run to give them the 3-2 lead following back-to-back doubles by Payton Green and Soles.

NC State struck yet again in the sixth with another two RBIs scored by a Soles single, extending the Wolfpack’s lead to 5-2 and ultimately sealing the win for NC State in game two.

Following today’s loss, the Tigers move to their third and final game of the series versus the Wolfpack on Sunday, April 3, at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.

Clemson baseball heads into the weekend presented with a three-game series against NC State and an opportunity to reach .500 in ACC play.

After defeating Winthrop 9-3 on Tuesday, Clemson is now at a pivotal point in the season where conference victories are crucial in moving up in the standings.

The Tigers sit on a 17-7 record through the team’s first 24 games but are 1-4 in the ACC. With three victories over the Wolfpack, Clemson would even up the win-loss column in conference play, which would be a huge turning point for the Tigers, who have the second-worst conference record in the ACC.

Eight in a row, this time with some dramatics

It wasn’t a game that the Irish were accustomed too, coming from behind has not been something this team has done much of this season. That was the case on Friday night however, as the Irish saw a late 4-0 deficit entering the seventh inning.

That’s when the bats came alive and the Irish scratched out three runs in the seventh and the tying run in the eighth to even the score at four and force extras. It was Carter Putz’s solo home run to start the scoring for Notre Dame and Jack Brannigan finished off the comeback.

The game would extend into the twelfth inning when the Irish bats once again came alive. Four runs in that inning once again highlighted by a long ball, this time by Zack Prajzner.

The story wasn’t just about the Irish bats, it was the bullpen. Starter Aidan Tyrell wasn’t his sharpest, giving up four runs over four innings. Then Alex Rao, Radek Birkholz, Ryan McLinskey and Brannigan took over. They combined for nine innings without allowing a run and striking out 11 batters.

Although the win improved the Irish to 10-1, this game could be looked at as the starting point to another run at the ACC regular season title. If the Irish were to repeat as regular season champs, it would be the first time in program history that feat was accomplished. They have won consecutive conference tournament championships, the last time being the stretch from 2002-2006 when they won the Big East Conference tournament title every year.

The Irish continue their three-games series against the the Wolfpack this afternoon as they try and keep their 8-game winning streak alive.

Don’t mess with success

The ACC season finally begins for the Irish this weekend, as Friday night they will be in Raleigh, North Carolina to face off against host North Carolina State for a three-game set.

As noted earlier this week, Link Jarrett’s pitchers have been absolutely phenomenal early this year, leading the nation in ERA. A lot of that is due to the starting rotation and the three starters remain the same against the Wolfpack. Jarrett won’t mess with success as he will send out Aidan Tyrell in game one, followed by John Michael Bertrand in the second contest and finishing with Austin Temple on getaway day.

The Irish enter the weekend series on a seven-game winning streak and a 9-1 overall record. NC State will be the first true challenge for the Irish this season, as they are ranked in the Top-25 also and carry a 9-4 record into the weekend series.

Could we see a former Clemson baseball standout playing for another ACC team next season?  Well that is a possibility TCI confirmed Wednesday morning.

Sam Hall had hoped to go in the MLB draft and is still looking at free agent possibilities but he confirmed to TCI that he has committed to play for NC State if he returns for one final season.

NC State is coming off a CWS appearance and were just one win away from making the Championship series before their season was ended due to COVID.

Hall graduated from Clemson after starting 24 games for the Tigers this season after injuries sustained in the preseason kept him off the field for the start of the year.

Hall had a career .242 batting average for Clemson with 50 RBIs and a .360 OBP.

He provided a boost for the team at the plate and in the field in the second half of the season.
