NBA Power Rankings: The Celtics are still at the top following the NBA’s trade deadline

Boston didn’t make a big move but it also didn’t need to

The NBA Trade Deadline has come and gone, but not much has changed across the landscape of the league.

It was a relatively quiet trade deadline. There weren’t any stars available this go around. Most of the moves we saw were simply done to shift role players around and build depth around the cores across the league.

Still, despite not much changing with these moves, the NBA is still in a good place. The league is competitive in both conferences and the top of the West is setting up to be a race that we’ll remember for years to come.

Here’s a look at this week’s NBA Power Rankings.

P.J. Washington trade grades: Who won the deal between the Hornets and the Mavericks?

The Mavericks gave up a ton for P.J. Washington.

The Mavericks have been extremely active in trying to improve ahead of the NBA trade deadline.

Dallas already reportedly acquired Daniel Gafford from the Wizards to beef up the center depth behind Dereck Lively II. Now, it’s bringing in another frontcourt player to play next to them.

The Mavericks have reportedly acquired P.J. Tucker from the Hornets, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. It didn’t come at a light cost, either. There’s heavy draft capital included in this deal that surely makes this a tough pill for Dallas to swallow.

Let’s dive into the details of it all as we grade this trade.

Daniel Gafford trade grades: Who won the deal between the Wizards and Mavericks?

Luka Doncic has another pick-and-roll partner now

The front-court depth of the Mavericks has been a huge question all season long.

Obviously, Dereck Lively II has been incredible as a pick-and-roll partner with Luka Doncic so far this season. There hasn’t been much production behind him at center, though.

That changes now. The Wizards are trading Daniel Gafford to the Mavericks for Richaun Holmes and some undisclosed draft compensation, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Mavericks finally have their back up big man and he’s another springy pick-and-roll partner for Doncic and Kyrie Irving to play with. This should be fun in Dallas.

Let’s get into these trade grades.

1 NBA trade deadline 2024 deal that makes sense for every championship contender

Here’s one deal every NBA championship contender should make at the trade deadline.

Super Bowl week in the NBA means one crucial thing. The trade deadline, rife with interesting players galore, is just around the corner. Any contenders, bottom-feeders, or mediocre also-rans looking for a boost in players or future assets have until 3 p.m. Eastern time this Thursday to swing deals at their heart’s content.

(Clears throat): If LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers are indeed planning something, they have until then.

This deadline is particularly important to the NBA’s cream of the crop, the genuine championship contenders. With all due respect to squads like the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat — who could be reasonably classified as contenders by the end of the year — I have narrowed this crop down to four teams in each conference. (The Lakers need not apply.) These are the eight teams who could either swing for the fences or make minor but necessary depth additions in their respective title pursuits:

West

  • Denver Nuggets (defending champions)
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Oklahoma City Thunder

East

  • Boston Celtics
  • New York Knicks
  • Milwaukee Bucks
  • Philadelphia 76ers

As the specter of the NBA’s trade deadline looms, let’s break down one deal that makes sense for each of these heavyweights.
