Oklahoma Sooners beat No. 1 Texas 8-4, win 4th straight national championship

The Oklahoma Sooners made history as the first team to win four consecutive national championships with their 8-4 win over the Texas Longhorns.

The Oklahoma Sooners made history in their 8-4 win over the Texas Longhorns. The Sooners won their fourth-straight national championship, and this senior class capped off the most successful run in softball history.

The Texas Longhorns got the scoring going in the top of the second on Kayden Henry’s RBI single. But [autotag]Kasidi Pickering[/autotag] answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to put the Sooners up one.

The Longhorns tied the game up in the third off of starter [autotag]Karlie Keeney[/autotag]. [autotag]Peytn Monticelli[/autotag] came in with the bases loaded and kept the game tied 2-2. Texas then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Sooners began to take control. Consecutive singles by [autotag]Kinzie Hansen[/autotag], [autotag]Kasidi Pickering[/autotag], and [autotag]Rylie Boone[/autotag] set the stage for [autotag]Cydney Sanders[/autotag]. Sanders proceeded to launch a double to the right-center gap to clear the bases and put Oklahoma up 5-3.

[autotag]Nicole May[/autotag] took over in the fifth and had a dominant outing with a 1-2-3 inning and got two outs in the sixth before [autotag]Kelly Maxwell[/autotag] came in with runners on second and third. Maxwell induced a ground ball by Mia Scott, and a Texas run scored to make it 5-4. But Scott got caught off the bag, and [autotag]Avery Hodge[/autotag] flipped the ball to Sanders to get the final out of the inning and leave a runner stranded on third.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Sooners ran away from the Longhorns. Boone earned a one-out single, Sanders walked, and Hodge was hit by a pitch to load the bases. [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag] added to the Sooners lead with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. With two outs in the inning, [autotag]Ella Parker[/autotag] continued her incredible postseason with a two-RBI single to put Oklahoma up 8-4.

In the top of the seventh, Maxwell went up against the heart of the Texas lineup. Maxwell got Viviana Martinez to fly out and struck out Big 12 Player of the Year Reese Atwood before getting Katie Stewart to ground out to [autotag]Alyssa Brito[/autotag], who made a perfect throw over to Sanders to get the final out and send the Sooners into the record books.

Maxwell earned her second save of the NCAA Tournament and earned Most Outstanding Player, going 5-0 with a 1.88 ERA to lead the Oklahoma Sooners to the national championship.

It’s the Sooners’ eighth national title and their seventh since 2013. With four straight national titles, Oklahoma is the only program to accomplish this feat. The Sooners move into a tie for second with the Arizona Wildcats for most national titles.

Seniors [autotag]Jayda Coleman[/autotag], [autotag]Tiare Jennings[/autotag], [autotag]Rylie Boone[/autotag], [autotag]Kinzie Hansen[/autotag], and [autotag]Nicole May[/autotag] will go down as the most decorated class in softball history, with four national championships in their career.

With eight national titles, [autotag]Patty Gasso[/autotag] is now tied for the most in the history of the sport.

It was an incredible run for the Oklahoma Sooners, who lost just one game during the postseason, dating back to their Big 12 tournament title run. In the two games against Texas the Sooners outscored their Red River Rivals 16-7 to win the national title.

Notre Dame’s National Champion Lacrosse Team Recognized by Congress

National recognition for the national champs!

Notre Dame put the cap on what might have been the most dominating season in the history of college lacrosse a little over a week ago after they defeated Maryland 15-5 to win the national championship and finish the year an incredible 16-1.

On Monday evening the team was mentioned and recognized by the United States House of Representatives.

Congressman Rudy Yakym, who represents Indiana’s Second District (which includes South Bend) in Congress, recapping the incredible season the Fighting Irish put together for all to hear.

Check out the short video below:

Let’s hope Yakym is doing something similar for more Notre Dame athletics squads in not a lot of time.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner to walk on as receiver

Welcome back, Tyler!

[autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] has to have had one of the most unique paths in all of college football lately. After two years of quarterbacking at Notre Dame, he transferred to Alabama for the 2023 season but didn’t win the starting job. He then transferred back to Notre Dame and won a national championship with the men’s lacrosse team. Now, he’s coming back to the Irish football team as a walk-on receiver.

Here’s the official announcement by the Irish:

Although Buchner is walking on, he’ll count towards the football program’s 85-scholarship limit if he appears in a game. That will be an interesting decision for the Irish since he has not caught any passes during his time in college football, of which he has two years of eligibility remaining. So it stands to reason he’ll be starting from scratch with the Irish.

Until we find out exactly how his second Irish tenure will go, here are some images from his first time with the program:

Best Photos of Notre Dame’s Lacrosse Championship Win Over Maryland

The party is on in South Bend!

Notre Dame had been a very successful men’s lacrosse program for years but was unable to reach the sport’s peak until last May when they won their first national championship.

Fast forward a year and the Fighting Irish are back on top after dominating their way to a second-straight national championship.  Notre Dame overcame a slow start in Monday’s championship against Maryland where they trailed 2-0 early on.

The Irish went on an incredible run however, outscoring the Terrapins 15-3 the rest of the way en-route to that second-straight national championship.

We’ve had reaction from much of the Notre Dame community following the win here at Fighting Irish Wire but would like to share the best photos from Sunday’s dominating win below.

Notre Dame’s Palmer Jackson ties for eighth at national championship

Congrats, Palmer!

[autotag]Palmer Jackson[/autotag] kept the Notre Dame golf season going as long as it possibly could. Though the Irish as a team did not make it to the end at the national championship in Carlsbad, California, Jackson qualified for the final day on a list of individuals whose teams also did not advance.

The result was impressive as Jackson finished tied for eighth with a 1-under-par 287. No Irish golfer has placed that high at the national championship. He finished the final round with a 2-under 70.

Irish coach [autotag]John Handrigan[/autotag] said the following:

“What a way for Palmer Jackson to put an exclamation point on his elite career at Notre Dame. He’s helped set a new bar for what excellence means within our program and I couldn’t be more proud. He did everything right today and gave himself a chance to win, which is all you can ask for in this game. His mindset this week was world-class and it showed in his play. He’s forever left his mark on this program and University.”

Best of luck to Jackson in his future endeavors.

Tyler Buchner’s insane 18 months between Notre Dame and Alabama

What a wild run for TB12!

When [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] chose Notre Dame as part of the football team’s 2021 recruiting class, the hope was he would help the Fighting Irish win a national championship.

He did, but not like some anticipated.

On Monday, Buchner capped an absolutely wild 18 months.

Buchner was Notre Dame’s starting quarterback in 2022, but he struggled against Ohio State and Marshall before getting injured and missing the rest of the regular season.  He returned for the Gator Bowl and took home game MVP honors after throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more in a comeback win over South Carolina.

After Sam Hartman transferred to Notre Dame for the 2023 season, Buchner entered the transfer portal following spring practice, ultimately ending up at Alabama. He started one game for the Crimson Tide last fall, struggled mightily and sat behind Jalen Milroe the rest of the year.

At the conclusion of the regular season, Buchner announced he would return to Notre Dame but not to play football. Instead, the former Fighting Irish starting quarterback joined the reigning national championship lacrosse team, a sport he starred at during high school in California.

On Monday, Buchner and the Fighting Irish capped the incredible season with a dominating, 15-5, win over Maryland in the national championship.  Buchner played in a reserve role this year as expected since he hadn’t played lacrosse competitively in five years.

Whatever the future has in store for Buchner, it’ll be hard to imagine him ever experiencing as crazy of an 18-month run as he just went through.

Notre Dame Routs Maryland to Secure Second Straight National Championship

BACK 2 BACK!

It was a bit of a concerning start for No. 1 Notre Dame on Monday when the NCAA men’s lacrosse national championship game finally got started but all’s well that ends well for the Fighting Irish.

Maryland started things off with a 2-0 lead almost 3:30 into the contest but Notre Dame quickly came back.

Will Angrick got Notre Dame on the board roughly a minute later and 51 seconds after that, Jake Taylor’s 40th goal of the season tied things 2-2.

Notre Dame and Maryland then traded goals as things sat a 3-3 with 6:06 left in the first quarter but it was an onslaught from the Fighting Irish from there.

Jalen Seymour, Eric Dobson, Devon McLane, Chris Kavanagh (three times in a row), and Reilly Gray scored seven goals in a row for Notre Dame to give the Irish a 10-3 advantage before Maryland would score just before halftime to cut the lead to six.

Jordan Faison started the scoring in the second half with a behind the back goal, his 22nd of the season which gave the Irish an 11-4 advantage.  Chris Kavanagh quickly added another pair of goals to bring the lead to nine.

Fisher Finley and Jake Taylor would add the final goals of the year to close the game a 15-5 victor.  Notre Dame goaltender Liam Entenmann stopped 16 of 21 Maryland shot attempts in the victory.

We’ll have more on this story as the celebration is on for the Irish.  In the meantime, check out some of the best photos from the blowout championship victory below!

Alabama remains a top-tier national championship contender despite changes

Alabama has a lot to overcome, but is still a team to beat en route to the College Football Playoff national championship.

The 2024 college football season will feature a handful of sizable changes, however, Alabama Crimson Tide football fans are mostly focused on their own team. Without Nick Saban at the helm, new head coach Kalen DeBoer will be forced to tackle some high expectations in his first season in Tuscaloosa.

With a new-look SEC and an expanded College Football Playoff field, Alabama fans are expecting DeBoer to run the table in the regular season, make the College Football Playoff and compete for a national championship.

There are plenty of fans, experts and analysts who doubt Alabama and believe that the absence of Saban will result in the Tide’s dynasty to come to a crashing halt.

Despite these qualms, Chip Patterson of CBS Sports argues that any issues Alabama faces are likely to be in the possible College Football Playoff matchups, not the regular season.

“I think the Crimson Tide have some questions to answer before committing to them at this price to win three or four games in the playoff,” writes Patterson. “Alabama will still have several advantages over most of its schedule, but its those potential playoff games where I wonder if the margins — which have been shrinking over the last four years — make it tough to see a Year 1 title run for DeBoer.”

The Alabama football 2024 regular season features a few challenging matchups at home and on the road, including home games against the Georgia Bulldogs and Missouri Tigers and road games against the Wisconsin Badgers and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Where is Alabama in USA TODAY’s latest college football re-rank?

You may be surprised to see where Alabama ranks in the latest ranking of every FBS college football team heading into the 2024 season.

The upcoming 2024 Alabama Crimson Tide football season is full of unknowns. A new head coach, a new-look SEC and a new College Football Playoff format. How will all of this affect the team as they look to carry on the winning tradition it had for nearly two decades under the new-retired head coach Nick Saban? We can only guess.

Analysts and experts have attempted to project how the Crimson Tide’s 2024 season will transpire. A difficult schedule that features challenging games at home and on the road could leave Alabama with either an impressive resumĂŠ or an ugly record after November.

The latest college football re-rank from USA TODAY, which ranks every FBS program, has the Tide at No. 7 in the nation.

Only three SEC teams rank ahead of Alabama: No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs, No. 3 Texas Longhorns and No. 6 LSU Tigers.

A few months stand between today and the start to the 2024 college football season, but Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football news as the offseason progresses.
