4 bold predictions for Bears vs. Vikings

The Bears are going to throw the ball quite a bit with Nathan Peterman and score a safety in our bold predictions against the Vikings.

The regular season finale is upon us and the Chicago Bears will take the field one final time as they face the playoff-bound Minnesota Vikings at Soldier Field. This might feel more like a preseason game for Chicago, however. The Bears (3-13) are losers of nine straight and are simply playing for a draft pick at this point. They will be without a few key offensive starters, namely quarterback Justin Fields, who was ruled out with a hip injury. That means Nathan Peterman will make his first start as a Bear this weekend.

For the Vikings (12-4), it’s unclear how much playing time they will give their starters. They’ve already locked up a spot in the playoffs in the wild card round and would only be playing for seeding. Still, they could be looking for a convincing win after they were shellacked by the Green Bay Packers last week.

With so many unknowns, it’s the perfect opportunity to make some bold predictions.

Former Vol Nathan Peterman to start against Minnesota

Former Vol quarterback Nathan Peterman to start against Minnesota.

Former Tennessee quarterback Nathan Peterman will start for Chicago in its season finale against Minnesota Sunday.

Kickoff between the Bears (3-13) and Vikings (12-4) is slated for 1 p.m. EST at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. FOX will televise the NFC North matchup.

Peterman, who played for the Vols from 2013-14, will start in place of Justin Fields.

In two seasons at Tennessee under head coach Butch Jones, Peterman appeared in nine games. He completed 20-for-43 passing attempts, recording 94 passing yards and two interceptions.

He transferred to Pittsburgh from 2015-16. In 2015, he played for former Vols’ offensive coordinator and interim head coach Jim Chaney.

Peterman was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft by Buffalo.

He played for Buffalo from 2017-18 and with the Raiders (2018-21).

Bears QB Nathan Peterman to start, Justin Fields out Sunday vs. Vikings

The path to the number two seed got a little bit easier

The Minnesota Vikings pathway to getting the number two overall seed just got a little bit easier. When they face the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon, they won’t have to worry about dynamic quarterback Justin Fields as the Bears will be starting Nathan Peterman instead.

Fields reportedly has a hip injury and was ruled out on Wednesday morning by head coach Matt Eberflus. This lines up with the line shifting 2.5-points as the Vikings went from 1.5-point favorites to four-point favorites within 24 hours.

Of course, the Vikings still need to have the San Francisco 49ers to lose to the Arizona Cardinals to even have a chance to get the number two seed, but it’s not out of the question.

Bears to start Nathan Peterman at QB against Vikings

A sore hip has ended the season for Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears

A sore hip has ended Justin Fields’ season.

The Chicago Bears will turn to Nathan Peterman as their starting quarterback on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Peterman is 1-3 in four career starts. He has thrown 6 passes for the Bears this season, completing 3.

Overall, Peterman’s career stats are, um, frightening.

He has thrown 141 passes and completed 74. However, he has managed 3 touchdown passes against 13 interceptions.

Fields finished his season with 1,143 rushing yards and 2,242  passing yards. He accounted for 25 touchdowns.

Bears QB Justin Fields (hip) won’t play vs. Vikings in season finale

Justin Fields’ season is over after an MRI revealed a hip strain that will sideline him for the Bears’ season finale against the Vikings.

Bears quarterback Justin Fields’ 2022 season is done.

Coach Matt Eberflus revealed Wednesday that Fields came in with a sore hip on Monday morning, and an MRI showed he has a strained hip. Eberflus says Fields has been ruled out for Sunday’s season finale against the Vikings.

The doctor ruled Fields out, according to Eberflus. The coaches didn’t have a say.

Eberflus was quick to note that Fields’ injury isn’t considered long term, but he’s not able to go full speed. Per Eberflus, Fields said himself that “it’s still real sore.”

Following Sunday’s loss to the Lions, Eberflus said that Fields would start against the Vikings, if healthy. After all, Fields was just 64 yards shy of breaking Lamar Jackson’s single-season rushing record. But, ultimately, the most important thing is Fields’ long-term health heading into an important 2023 offseason.

With Fields sidelined, Nathan Peterman will start for Chicago when they host  a Minnesota team competing for the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Meanwhile, the Bears have a chance to lock down the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft with a loss and a Texans win.

Justin Fields exits game vs. Eagles, returns to lead Bears to TD

Justin Fields gave Bears fans a scare when he left the game with an injury only to return to lead his team to a touchdown drive.

Bears second-year quarterback Justin Fields briefly left the field against the Eagles in the fourth quarter after sustaining an apparent hamstring injury.

The nature of the injury was unknown, but Fields was seen limping from the field before being instructed by coaches to go down to stop play.

Fields put up a valiant effort in this tilt and had the Bears within four points of the 12-1 Eagles before exiting the game. He had completed 10 of 16 pass attempts he took, found the end zone once, and managed to keep from throwing an interception. His 95 rushing yards led Chicago in the ground game and seemed to threaten Philadelphia’s usually stout defense.

Backup Nathan Peterman took over in Fields’ absence, but with the game on the line and a chance to lead a potential comeback, Fields returned to the field, ready to give the Bears their best shot at their fourth win of the season. And he delivered.

Fields led Chicago on a six-play, 60-yard scoring drive, where he found a wide open Byron Pringle for a 35-yard touchdown to bring the Bears to within one score.

Fields has showcased his playmaking ability and toughness in this game, providing a glimpse of what he has to offer to the city of Chicago for years to come.

Bears place Trevor Siemian on injured reserve, sign Nathan Peterman to active roster

The Bears officially placed QB Trevor Siemian on injured reserve and signed Nathan Peterman to the active roster.

The Chicago Bears placed quarterback Trevor Siemian on injured reserve on Saturday, ending his season as he undergoes surgery for an oblique injury. To fill Siemian’s spot, the team signed Nathan Peterman from the practice squad to the active roster.

Siemian suffered the oblique injury prior to last Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, but still wound up playing the entire game in place of Justin Fields as the Bears lost 31-10. Head coach Matt Eberflus announced the backup quarterback would be undergoing season-ending surgery during his Friday press conference. Siemian was signed this offseason to a two-year deal to backup Fields. He completed 14-of-25 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his lone start.

With Siemian out, Peterman will be the new backup to Fields, who is returning to the lineup this week to face the Green Bay Packers after missing one game with a left shoulder separation. Peterman was active last week, but didn’t play. The Bears also signed veteran quarterback Tim Boyle earlier in the week.

Bears QB Trevor Siemian to undergo season-ending surgery on oblique

Bears backup QB Trevor Siemian’s season is done.

There’s been plenty of quarterback news for the Bears on Friday. After news that Justin Fields is in line to start against the Packers, coach Matt Eberflus announced that backup Trevor Siemian’s season is over.

Siemian suffered an oblique injury during warmups in last week’s game against the Jets. He was set to start in place of an injured Fields. While it sounded like Nathan Peterman might get the starting nod at one point, Siemian gutted it out and got the start for Chicago.

Eberflus said Siemian will be placed on injured reserve and will undergo season-ending surgery on his oblique.

With Siemian done for the year, it’ll be Nathan Peterman serving as the backup QB to Fields. Earlier this week, the Bears signed Tim Boyle from the Lions’ practice squad earlier this week. He’ll be QB3 with Peterman backing up Fields.

Former Saints QB Trevor Siemian injured in warmups, Nathan Peterman could start for Bears

Former Saints QB Trevor Siemian injured in warmups, putting Nathan Peterman in line to start for the Bears with Justin Fields unavailable:

Trevor Siemian can’t catch a break. The former New Orleans Saints quarterback was tabbed to start for the Chicago Bears on Sunday with Justin Fields out of action due to a shoulder injury, but they may have to go in a different direction against the New York Jets. Siemian suffered an oblique muscle injury while warming up at MetLife Stadium which opened the door for third-string quarterback Nathan Peterman to step into the lineup. Running back David Montgomery was tabbed to be the emergency quarterback.

Siemian started 6 games for the Saints last season, logging more pass attempts (188) than both Jameis Winston (161) and Taysom Hill (134). He wasn’t exactly impressive outside of two clutch wins against division opponents, stepping in after Winston was injured against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to manage a 36-27 win and closing out the year in relief of Hill to beat the Atlanta Falcons 30-20. But Siemian showed he can play in this league and it won him this opportunity with Chicago.

So it’s a shame to see him lose this shot to bad luck with an injury. Peterman has thrown a dozen interceptions against just 3 touchdown passes across 10 games in the NFL (4 starts), whereas Siemian has scored 41 touchdown passes while throwing 27 interceptions during his 34-game career (29 snarts) with four different teams. So if all things were equal and both players were healthy, he would be the easy choice here. Bears media relations say it’s going to be a game-time decision as to whether Siemian or Peterman starts against the Jets, so stay tuned for an update.

The Bears came so close to starting Nathan Peterman at QB and NFL fans had so many jokes

Ugh. This came so close to happening.

The Chicago Bears today will be without their star quarterback, Justin Fields, who is out with a shoulder injury. That wasn’t much of a surprise heading into Sunday’s Week 12 action.

What is a surprise for the Bears is who will be their starting QB on the road against the New York Jets: Nathan Peterman.

Well, that’s what we thought until the offense took the field and Trevor Siemian was under center for Chicago.

So here’s what happened: NFL reporters reported 45 minutes before kickoff that Siemian, the Bears’ backup QB, had suffered an oblique injury and Peterman would start the game.

Then a few minutes before kickoff the Bears’ PR team said that it would be a game-time decision and that Siemian could still start.

Mike Garafolo had the initial news:

Here was the update minutes before the game:

And then it became official when the Bears’ offense took the field in the first quarter:

So. Close.

NFL fans had jokes about Peterman.
