Jaguars add RB, reunite with two OL via practice squad

The Jaguars made a quintet of practice squad transactions on Wednesday, signing running back Myles Gaskin and offensive linemen Jerome Carvin and Dieter Eiselen to the unit and releasing punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington.

Jacksonville had a practice squad opening created Tuesday when the Carolina Panthers signed running back and wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. away from the unit and onto their active roster. The Jaguars practice squad now stands at 17 players.

A seventh-round NFL draft pick by Miami in 2019, Gaskin played for the Dolphins through the 2022 season and has since bounced between practice squads and active rosters with the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams.

Gaskin has logged 364 rushing attempts for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns, and 102 receptions for 712 yards and six touchdowns, in 45 NFL games, including 16 starts.

Carvin and Eiselen each joined Jacksonville’s practice squad in November but were released in recent weeks as the Jaguars made injury-related additions to the unit. Neither was promoted to the team’s active roster for a game during their previous stints.

Eiselen has made 24 appearances in his five-season NFL career; Carvin has not yet appeared in a game.

Haack and Addington’s releases indicate Jacksonville is pleased with the progress of starting punter Logan Cooke (left knee) and long snapper Ross Matiscik (hamstring) in their recovery from lower-body injuries.

Jacksonville added Haack and Addington for insurance last week, but Cooke and Matiscik were able to play against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Vikings RB Aaron Jones leaves game against Jets with hip injury

The Jets defense stifled the Vikings on Sunday as they face off. The offense has relied heavily on Aaron Jones this year.

The Jets’ defense stifled the Vikings on Sunday as they faced off in London. The offense has relied heavily on the run game this year, specifically Aaron Jones.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, Jones left the first quarter of the game with a hip injury. After being evaluated and tested on the sideline, he will not be returning to the game.

Jones had been averaging 116 total yards of offense through the first four weeks of the season. He was an explosive part of their offense, but now that workload will fall on Myles Gaskin and Ty Chandler.

Chandler has been running well this year when given the chance, so his earning more reps in this game could tell us how things will go without Jones.

Thankfully for Jones and the Vikings, the team has a bye week in Week 6, so he will have ample time to recover if anything serious happens.

Vikings elevate RB Myles Gaskin and CB Bobby McCain to active roster

The Minnesota Vikings elevated running back Myles Gaskin and cornerback Bobby McCain from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Minnesota Vikings elevated running back Myles Gaskin and cornerback Bobby McCain from the practice squad to the active roster. Gaskin and McCain were active all preseason but were apart of initial roster cuts to get the team to the 53-man roster requirements.

Both players cleared waivers at the time and landed back with the Vikings when they signed to the practice squad.

Gaskin will begin his second season with the Vikings in 2024 after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 2019 NFL Draft. Gaskin has experience with special teams and is seen as a potential option for the team to utilize in the new kickoff style and will also serve as the team’s third-string running back.

McCain joined the Vikings during the preseason, as the team was looking to add depth to the secondary. He will also play some special teams roles and be part of the cornerback rotation in certain schemes and situations.

Report: Vikings expected to sign free agent RB Cam Akers pending physical

According to a report from Pioneer Press writer Charley Walters, the Minnesota Vikings intend to sign RB Cam Akers, pending a physical.

A familiar face could soon be joining — or rather, re-joining — the Minnesota Vikings backfield. According to a report from Pioneer Press writer Charley Walters, the Vikings are poised to bring back running back Cam Akers, provided he passes a physical.

Akers remained with the team for the 2023 season after a late-September trade with the Los Angeles Rams brought him to Minneapolis. Like most Vikings running backs in 2023, Akers struggled to gain yards.

In six games with the team, Akers ran the ball 38 times for just 138 yards and one touchdown before being lost for the season with a torn Achilles — just one week after starting quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered the same injury.

Adding Akers to the Vikings backfield could spell the end for at least one running back on the roster. Free agent acquisition Aaron Jones will be safe and, presumably, the team’s starting running back. Ty Chandler should also be secure as a change-of-pace back to spell Jones.

Beyond that, though, the situation at the position gets interesting. Currently, the Vikings have Kene Nwangwu, DeWayne McBride, and Myles Gaskin on the roster. Nwangwu’s roster spot is likely also safe due mainly to the special team’s contributions he brings to the team.

It’s hard to imagine the Vikings going into the season with six running backs on the roster, which likely spells the end of the road for either McBride or Gaskin — or perhaps both. One of them could wind up on the practice squad, but it’s unlikely both do.

McBride was drafted by the Vikings in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft and spent all of last season on the team’s practice squad. Gaskin was originally a seventh-round selection by the Miami Dolphins in the 2019 NFL Draft and spent his first four seasons in Miami — including one year as a starter — before joining the Vikings for a portion of last season.

Vikings sign RB Myles Gaskin to futures contract

A day after signing 10 players to futures contracts, the Vikings added one more in Gaskin

The Minnesota Vikings announced they signed one more player to a futures contract as they gave one to running back Myles Gaskin.

The Vikings signed Gaskin to the active early on in the season and elevated him from the practice squad multiple times this season to be the third running back on the roster. He spent time with the Los Angeles Rams in between his two stints with the Vikings.

Gaskin being brought back on a futures contract is a good thing for the Vikings running back room. While he doesn’t offer high upside at the position, he does have both a good baseline of play and is a veteran voice in the room for Ty Chandler and DeWayne McBride in their development.

Adding Gaskin to a futures contract makes it 11 total players the Vikings have signed to said contracts.

Vikings elevate 2 players from practice squad for Week 15 vs. Bengals

Jackson and Gaskin will likely see heavy roles on speciat teams on Saturday

Going into Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Minnesota Vikings are dealing with injuries on both sides of the ball, but the offense has been hindered more. They will be without starters running back Alexander Mattison and right tackle Brian O’Neill with wide receiver Jalen Nailor also missing the game.

On Friday afternoon, the Vikings elevated wide receiver Trishton Jackson and running back Myles Gaskin from the practice squad.

Jackson has played in six games for the Vikings this season with two catches for nine yards including a two-point conversion.

Gaskin has played in just two games this season: week two with the Vikings and week eight with the Los Angeles Rams. He hasn’t recorded a touch on the season.

The Vikings and Bengals will kick off at noon Central on Saturday.

Sean McVay non-committal on Zach Evans starting at RB for Rams in Week 7

Sean McVay won’t name a starting RB for the Rams yet in Week 7 despite Zach Evans being No. 3 on the depth chart.

The Los Angeles Rams will be without Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers for multiple weeks, so Sean McVay will have to figure out how the backfield shakes out until they can return. Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, McVay was non-committal on naming Zach Evans the starting running back for the Rams.

“I wouldn’t say that,” McVay said. “We’ve got the week to be able to evaluate and I would say all four of those guys are possibilities and we’re truly navigating through that. But I was pleased with what Zach did towards the latter part of the game.”

Both Williams and Rivers suffered injuries in the Week 6 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Evans would finish the game by receiving his first four rushing attempts in the NFL, turning them into 10 yards.

The rookie sixth-round pick was the only running back left on the active roster at the beginning of the week. But since then, the Rams have activated Royce Freeman from their practice squad, signed Darrell Henderson off of the street, and signed Myles Gaskin off of the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad.

Given that Evans and Freeman have been with the team the longest this season, they could share touches in Sunday’s game. There’s a chance Henderson or Gaskin are involved in the game plan, but it’s tough to expect much from them on short notice.

McVay is going to use this week of practice to determine how the backfield workload will be divvied up. While Evans seems like the obvious choice to see the majority of the touches, his ability to understand the offense and be trusted in pass protection is crucial.

With all of the moving parts, we may not know who will draw the start at running back for the Rams until Sunday’s showdown with the Steelers kicks off.

Rams sign RB Myles Gaskin off Vikings’ practice squad

In addition to Darrell Henderson Jr., the Rams have added Myles Gaskin, signing him off the Vikings’ practice squad

The Los Angeles Rams’ running back room was decimated on Sunday afternoon, losing both Kyren Williams and Ronnie Rivers to injury. Sean McVay and Les Snead didn’t waste much time bringing in reinforcements, doing so in two different ways.

In addition to signing Darrell Henderson Jr. to the practice squad, they’ve added Myles Gaskin. They signed Gaskin off the Vikings’ practice squad and to their active roster, according to Adam Schefter.

Gaskin was released by the Dolphins in August and quickly scooped up by the Vikings, where he’s bounced back and forth from the active roster and practice squad. He was active for one game but didn’t play any snaps on offense.

Gaskin is a former seventh-round pick of the Dolphins, entering the NFL in 2019. Since then, he’s rushed for 1,355 yards in his career, though only 26 of those have come in the last two years.

He adds depth to the running back room, which features Zach Evans, Royce Freeman, Henderson and Gaskin.

Vikings lose CB from practice squad to Bears

The Vikings practice squad took a hit on Wednesday

The Minnesota Vikings had the first player taken off their practice squad on Wednesday. According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, the Chicago Bears have signed cornerback Joejuan Williams off of the Vikings practice squad to their active roster.

The Bears have issues right now at cornerback with Kyler Gordon on injured reserve with a broken hand and both Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson are banged up.

Williams heads to Chicago to play in a defense that will ask him to play both press-man coverage and drop cover-2, both of which he is more than capable of doing. He played well for the Vikings during the preseason and was viewed as a solid asset on the practice squad.

The Vikings replaced him on the practice squad with Myles Gaskin.

Vikings add running back to practice squad

One day after being released, he joins the practice squad.

One day after releasing him from the practice squad, the Minnesota Vikings announced they have signed running back Myles Gaskin to the practice squad.

This is a move that was easy to see coming. The Vikings have made many procedural moves with Gaskin during his short time with the franchise.

Gaskin provides veteran depth in the backfield while Kene Nwangwu is still on injured reserve through at least this week against the Carolina Panthers.

During his career, Gaskin has 361 rushes for 1,355 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and seven touchdowns, along with 101 catches on 128 targets for 701 yards (6.9 yards per catch) and six touchdowns.
