Former LSU point guard transfers to Murray State to play football

Former Arkansas commit and LSU point guard Justice Hill is transferring to Murray State – to play football.

It’s not every day you see a player transfer back to a previous school.

It’s even more rare when they return to play a different sport. However, that is exactly what Justice ‘Juice’ Hill is doing. And if anyone is familiar with doing things a little differently – it’s the 6’0 point guard from Little Rock.

Hill committed to Arkansas way back as a freshman in high school and was locked in on the Hogs. He even graduated high school early to spend a semester on the bench for Mike Anderson – but when he was fired and replaced by Eric Musselman, Hill hit the portal and ultimately started his hoops journey at Salt Lake Community College.

After dominating the JuCo level, Hill spent two years at Murray State where he averaged 13.4 points and 5.1 assists as a junior in 2021-22, when the Racers went 31-2 under coach Matt McMahon.

Hill then followed McMahon to LSU, averaging 5.6 points and 2.7 assists before spending last year across the country at LMU – shooting a career high 36.3% from three and averaging 11.2 points per game.

So while the story has always been unconventional, it was still a surprise to see Hill’s latest endeavor: a return to Murray State to play football.

Hill was an elite wide receiver in high school, drawing interest from Auburn among others, and when he first hit the portal at Arkansas he was negotiating an opportunity to play football for the Hogs under Chad Morris.

The bug to give college football a chance evidently never went away for Hill, and now he’ll return to Murray to give the Racers a last minute addition ahead of their first game against No. 11 ranked Missouri on August 29.

Why Murray State Will Win

The Racers were able to get by a good UT Martin team 14-10 last week, and they did it even though they had a rough day at the offense.

QB Preston Rice is much, much better than 9-of-22, but he was able to connect on a few good deep plays – like an 83-yard score to DeQuan Dallas in the first quarter – and the D did the rest.

UT Martin has an offense, and it turned it over three times and was held to just 213 yards. SE Missouri State dominated its opener, but Murray State isn’t Eastern Illinois.

Why SE Missouri State Will Win

The Redbirds won 47-7 on the road after rolling up 474 yards of total offense forcing four takeaways. Andrew Bunch was fantastic, throwing for 302 yards and a touchdown in a clean performance, and Zion Custis and Geno Hess each ran for two scores to balance things out a wee bit.

The offensive line didn’t generate much of a push, but it didn’t matter – it was a blowout win that was over by halftime. Murray State might have a solid D, but it has to prove it can keep up if SEMO gets hot early.

What’s Going To Happen

SE Missouri State has more pop.

One of the stars of the OVC this year, it’ll be more spectacular and Murray State will be more solid. As long as the Redbirds don’t start turning it over in bunches, they won’t have any problems.

Why UT Martin Will Win

Will Murray State have a more dangerous passing game?

It was a few years ago, and it has playmakers now, but the 2019 team didn’t get much out of the offensive line, couldn’t get much out of the defensive front in the backfield, and the passing game struggled to make a push down the field.

The Skyhawks will be able to throw with John Bachus back at quarterback and a nice group of playmakers around him, but the key to the team is a defense that gets a good-looking linebacking corps and a solid secondary, but …

Why Murray State Will Win

The UT Martin defensive front will need a little bit to get going.

Murray State might need more of a downfield passing attack, but the offense can move down the field with QB Preston Rice back along with eight other offensive starters from the 2019 version.

The running game should be okay, but the receiving corps should be able to keep things moving – LaMartez Brooks and Malik Cunningham are strong – but as long as the Racers can grind things out, they should be able to keep control of the tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

The offenses should play relatively evenly but the UT Martin defensive front will generate a bit more pressure and the offense will be a tad bit stronger in a relatively even – and interesting – game as opposed to the 40-7 Skyhawk win two years ago.
