A buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave UMass men’s basketball team the win and public bettors an even better cover

Which line did you bet on?

What makes college basketball one of the most entertaining sports to watch is just how often we’re gifted with some truly special moments to end games. Though it isn’t time for March Madness yet, we’ve already gotten some November madness early in the season.

Today’s fantastic finish belongs to the UMass Minutemen, who stole a win from the Murray State Racers during the semifinals of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.

Trailing 69-68 with seven seconds to play, Minutemen guard Noah Fernandes dribbled the length of the court and hoisted a step-back 3-pointer from the right wing to beat the buzzer and hand the Racers a crushing loss.

But the buzzer-beating shot from Fernandes did more than just win or lose a game for the two teams who took the court, it impacted those wagered on the game.

Murray State opened at +1.5, meaning if the shot had missed or even been ruled a 2-pointer rather than a three, the Racees would’ve covered. But they closed a point higher (+2.5) than they opened, so the two-point defeat they suffered on Friday meant those who bet on the latter line are still coming away with money.

Fortunately, the vast majority of the betting public was pulling for UMass. According to Action Network, 52 percent of all bets and 57 percent of the money wagered was on UMass (-1.5). Another 48 percent of moneyline bettors grabbed UMass (-125) with 88 percent of the money wagered on the Minutemen to win outright.

A horrible beat for those who took Murray State and an incredible hit for everyone who didn’t.

The Racers had a whole lot of fun with the first meeting against the Redhawks, scoring a season-high 106 points by hitting 56% from the field with 11 threes.

Southeast Missouri State will take a lot of threes, and it has the offensive ability to keep up, but it doesn’t have the D from three to hold on if Murray State goes off.

Why SE Missouri State Will Win

SEMO has been able to put points on the board lately.

The offense might be a tad hit or miss, but it put up 94 in the loss to Tennessee Tech, 92 in the win over Morehead State, and it’s been on from the field lately.

There’s enough attacking to get to the rim and generate a ton of free throws and plenty of points and second chances, and that’s what it has to do.

It can’t keep up with the Racers, but if it can manufacture the extra passes – good things happen when the team finishes with 13 assists or more – it’ll be in this.

What’s Going To Happen

Murray State might not be consistent, but it’s winning a whole lot.

It’s been great at keeping the ball moving, it’s making everything from the field and the line, and the defense is dominating just as much as the offense is.

Yeah, SE Missouri State is very, very dangerous at home, but it won’t have the defense to hold on late.

Why Belmont Will Win

The Bruins lost to Murray State 82-60 back in mid-January, lost to Morehead State a few days later, and they’ve been on fire ever since.

On a ten-game winning streak, they’re cranking up the offense with lots and lots and lots of passes for easy baskets.

Belmont leads the nation in assists, the offense is the best in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring, and not shockingly, it’s among the best in the nation in field goal percentage averaging close to 50% from the field.

Murray State was able to limit those passes and extra plays the first time around, and not shockingly it was one of the team’s worst shooting days of the season.

Keep the ball moving on the Racers – it is possible – and this will be a fight.

Why Murray State Will Win

Murray State has won 16 straight since losing at Auburn for a reason.

Belmont comes up with a ton of steals and takeaways, but Murray State doesn’t turn the ball over.

The Bruins don’t get a lot of offensive rebounds because they shoot so well, but they’re going to struggle on the defensive side. Overall they’re good on the glass, but Murray State out rebounds teams by close to eight per game.

The Racer defense is the best in the OVC, and the team still won the first time around even after allowing Belmont to hit 41% from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Belmont is playing well, and it should be able to shoot well enough to keep this close throughout. However, Murray State is just too good overall, especially at home.

UT Martin was able to keep things within ten points back in late January, but that was about it. The Racers aren’t just 14-0 in CFSB; they’re dominant.

It’ll take a while to get there, but the run will come late to pull away.

Austin Peay should’ve provided something of a challenge … nope. Murray State shot the lights out inside and out in the 91-56 win.

On the flip side, UT Martin has lost 11 of its last 13 games – including a 74-66 battle with Murray State – because it’s not shooting well enough. It’ll take the threes, and it’ll have its moments, but the defense hasn’t been close to strong enough to overcome the 29% shooting from three.

Why UT Martin Will Win

UT Martin can hit the boards a bit.

That’s mostly a function of missing a whole lot of shots, but the offensive rebounding is there, there’s a good inside presence and lots of blocked shots, and the D will force enough turnovers to get on the move.

The Skyhawks actually weren’t that bad in the first meeting. They couldn’t hit a thing from three and were lousy from the field, but they still managed to hang around because Murray State was even worse from three and was hit with way too many fouls.

UT Martin just doesn’t shoot well enough.

Murray State won’t do anything crazy because it won’t need to. It’s not going to open it up on the road until late, but it’ll be a whole lot better than 3-for-27 from three this time around.

Why Tennessee State Will Win

The Tigers have to try making this a defensive fight.

They’re not hitting anything from three, but they’re fantastic lately on the free throw line and have to keep attacking the basket.

It’s not quite right to forget about the three, but the Tigers aren’t great from the outside and they’re not going to get enough offensive rebounds to make a difference.

They’re usually okay at coming up with big plays on the glass, but they only came up with six in the first meeting and Murray State is normally amazing at dominating the defensive boards.

Why Murray State Will Win

Tennessee State just doesn’t shoot well enough.

It turns the ball over too much, it comes up with way too many fouls, and it’s not doing nearly enough from three to matter.

Yeah, it has to attack the basket because it’s probably only going to come up with 3-to-5 three-pointers.

Murray State is good enough from the outside, but it should be able to win the rebounding battle and come up with at least ten on the offensive side. It outrebounded the Tigers by 14 in the first meeting and held them to just 44 points.

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee State is 1-13 when it doesn’t hit at least 47% from the field. Only four teams were able to make 47% or more of their shots against the Racer D this year, and Tennessee State isn’t going to be one of them.

Murray State will get up fast, Tennessee State won’t have the outside shooting ability to keep up, and the 23rd-ranked team in the nation will keep moving on.

Murray State basketball finally posts final score from loss at Auburn

Peace has been restored.

Faith in the Racers has been restored.

Murray State lost to Auburn 71-58 back on December 22nd. The Racers posted the final score to Twitter only to be ratio’d with deep-friend memes by Tigers fans in the replies, as is tradition. MSU then proceeded to delete the tweet.

By all accounts, this was a severe mistake.

For the next several weeks, any time Murray State tweeted, Auburn fans flooded the replies with even more memes (“you just lost to the ghost of Murray State’s deleted final score tweet,” for example) telling the Racers to post the final score or else the memes would never stop.

In response, MSU started blocking Auburn fans. As would any person that was getting destroyed on Twitter. Then, in the midst of the war, a hero approached.

Tevin Brown, a guard on Murray State’s basketball team, ended the Twitter war by posting the final score.

Auburn fans were overjoyed in the comments. In fact, some fans were so glad that the final was posted, they took to the replies of Tennessee State’s basketball Twitter account, spamming deep-fried images of Tevin Brown after the Racers beat Tigers of TSU handily.

Now, a peace treaty from Murray State basketball’s own account has been offered.

The war between Auburn and Murray State Twitter has officially subsided. We may now move on to spamming Ole Miss on Saturday.
