How far will Seahawks have to fly for game vs. Bucs in Munich?

However, at least the Bucs won’t have much of an advantage in this department.

The Seahawks are in for one hell of a road trip later on this year. This morning the NFL announced that Seattle will be traveling to Munich, Germany for a game against the Buccaneers on November 13.

Kickoff time will be 6:30 a.m. PT, which is difficult enough. The players will also have to contend with a very long flight time – over 12 hours according to Google. However, at least the Bucs won’t have much of an advantage in this department. According to beat writer Greg Auman, Seattle’s squad will only be in the air for about half an hour longer than Tampa due to being much further north.

So, that’s encouraging.

Then again, the Bucs have a much better team on paper than the Seahawks heading into this season. We probably won’t get odds for the game until the week of but we’d be surprised if Tampa isn’t favored by a touchdown.

Chiefs won’t play in Germany, Mexico or England in 2022

The NFL officially announced its international slate of games for 2022 and the #Chiefs won’t be going abroad this year.

The Kansas City Chiefs will not be one of the teams playing the NFL’s first-ever game in Munich, Germany in 2022.

Germany is set to play host to four International Series games over the next four seasons, with the first game coming in 2022. It’s one of five international NFL games set to be played next season, with one to be played in Mexico and three in the United Kingdom.

The Chiefs were speculated as potential opponents for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the inaugural match set to take place at FC Bayern’s Allianz Arena. Both teams were awarded NFL international marketing right for Germany along with the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots. Whenever possible, the NFL intends to schedule international games so teams that hold marketing rights to particular countries can play in those countries.

On Wednesday morning the NFL announced its full slate of international games and the Chiefs won’t be playing in any of them.

While the Chiefs won’t be heading abroad this year, CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt expressed optimism during the 2022 NFL draft that the team would play an international series game in the next 2-3 years.

“The league will be playing a number of international games,” Hunt began. “I’m hopeful that we’ll be one of them. If we’re not selected this year, I think we’ll be selected in the next two or three years. Obviously, we would be excited to play in Germany if the opportunity presents itself.”

The NFL’s full schedule release will come in May, but one Chiefs game has already been revealed. The Chiefs will have their home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2 of the regular season on Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime.

Seahawks have 3 road opponents hosting international games in 2022

There’s a chance that may finally change this year, though.

The NFL has sent a number of teams to play games outside of the United States in recent years as they attempt to grow their brand around the globe. As of yet, the Seahawks have not played in one of them. There’s a chance that may finally change this year, though.

The league just announced that five teams will be “hosting” international games during the 2022 season. Three of them are on Seattle’s schedule for away games this year: the Cardinals are playing in Mexico City, the Saints will host a game in London, and the Buccaneers will play in Munich.

The full schedule for the 2022 NFL season is set to be released in May.

There’s no way to know for sure, but it’s a heck of a flight-time from Seattle to Europe and jet fuel is expensive. Our guess is they’ll visit Arizona in Mexico City if it does happen.

Chiefs logical choice for NFL’s game played in Munich in 2022

The NFL officially announced a game will be played in Munich, Germany in 2022. The #Chiefs are a logical choice to play in that game:

The NFL formally announced on Wednesday that it would begin playing games in Germany, beginning in the 2022 NFL season. The first game is one of four games to be played in Germany between 2022-2025. It’ll be played in Munich, with FC Bayern hosting the first game in Germany in 2022 at Allianz Arena. It’s one of five international NFL games set to be played in 2022, with one to be played in Mexico and three in the United Kingdom.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a logical choice for the 2022 Munich game for a number of reasons. First, they’re one of four NFL teams awarded NFL international marketing right for Germany along with the Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The NFL has previously stated that it will attempt to schedule international games so teams that hold marketing rights can play in those countries. Tampa Bay is slated to host Kansas City sometime in 2022, so that game would be an obvious choice to be played in Munich, especially as a rematch of Super Bowl LV.

The Chiefs have an unspoken partnership with FC Bayern due to CEO and Chairman Clark Hunt. Hunt’s soccer team, FC Dallas, has shared a player development partnership with FC Bayern since 2018. That relationship has extended to the Chiefs, as the team was slated to host a match for the International Champions Cup in July of 2019 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The game between FC Bayern and AC Milan was eventually moved to Children’s Mercy Park as weather impacted the team’s ability to adequately prepare Arrowhead Stadium for the match. These clubs have collaborated leading up to that game, even putting star QB Patrick Mahomes in the spotlight with some of FC Bayern’s biggest stars.

Mahomes would be the third and final reason that the Chiefs would make a lot of sense for the 2022 game. He’s taken the league by storm since 2018 and has emerged as one of its most popular stars. He leads the NFL in merchandise sales among active players per the NFLPA’s most recent reporting. The league has every reason to get him in front of an international crowd as a way to help build up its audience.

Upon the announcement of the game in Munich, the Chiefs also showed their hand. They were quick to retweet FC Bayern’s US Twitter post down below:

It’s not a big surprise to see some Mahomes and Chiefs HC Andy Reid in that video.

Maybe Kansas City gets passed over for the game next season, but really it’s only a matter of time before the Chiefs end up playing a game in Germany.

NFL to play games in Munich

Munich, Germany, will play host to an NFL International Series game in 2022

The National Football League is expanding its international presence.

The league announced Wednesday it will begin playing games in Munich, Germany, beginning in 2022.

“We are very pleased to welcome Munich and Frankfurt to the NFL family and are excited to reward our fans in Germany for their passion by bringing them the spectacle of regular-season NFL football,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “We look forward to staging our first game in Germany at FC Bayern Munich’s fantastic stadium later this year and to exploring areas of broader collaboration with the Bundesliga.”

Per NFL.com:

The game in Munich is one of five international NFL games scheduled for 2022, along with one in Mexico and three in the United Kingdom — two will be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as well as a Jacksonville Jaguars home game at Wembley Stadium.

Germany will host four International Series games over the next four seasons, with the 2022 matchup and an additional one at FC Bayern Munich Stadium, the home of the Bundesliga champions. The two other games will be played at Frankfurt Stadium.

“We are very pleased to welcome the NFL International Series to Munich,” Lord Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter said. “It is a great honor for the state capital Munich to be the first German city to stage a regular-season NFL game.”
