Michigan State football continues to find new ways to lose this year.

The Spartans outplayed Rutgers for most of the game on Saturday, but costly mistakes in the fourth quarter led to a monster comeback in a Scarlet Knights 27-24 victory. Michigan State let an 18-point lead evaporate in a four-minute span in the fourth quarter to lose their fourth straight game.

Michigan State is now 2-4 on the season and 0-3 in Big Ten play. Reaching a bowl game is in doubt with a remaining schedule that includes three top 10 teams in Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State.

WATCH: Graham Couch, Chris Solari analyze Spartans collapse vs. Rutgers

Hear what Graham Couch and Chris Solari had to say about the Spartans’ heartbreaking collapse at Rutgers on Saturday

Michigan State football lost in a remarkably heartbreaking fashion on Saturday at Rutgers.

The Spartans dominated the Scarlet Knights for the first three quarters in building a 24-6 lead going into the final quarter. However, that lead slipped away in a four-minute span that included costly mistake after costly mistake as Rutgers stormed back for the 27-24 win.

The loss to Rutgers was just another blow in an already brutally tough season for the Spartans, who have now lost four straight games. Michigan State is 2-4 overall and would need a dramatic turn of events to reach the postseason.

So what does Graham Couch of the Lansing State Journal and Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press think of this game? Hear their breakdown by clicking on the tweet below:

MSU football fumbles win vs. Rutgers

Well, at least basketball season is nearly here…

This Michigan State football season continues to get worse and worse.

The Spartans found a new way to lose on Saturday, fumbling away an 18-point lead to fall at Rutgers, 27-24. Michigan State once again outplayed their opponent but made costly mistakes that left them on the short end of the scoreboard.

Michigan State led 17-6 at half and carried a 24-6 lead into the fourth quarter with the game clearly in hand. However, a blocked punt for a touchdown by Rutgers to open the fourth quarter turned the tide of the game. The Scarlet Knights would score two more touchdowns in a four-minute span to regain the lead with roughly eight minutes left in the game. Michigan State would fail to get anything going again on offense from that point as Rutgers ran the clock out for the win.

Katin Houser made his first career start at quarterback for the Spartans and looked impressive in rainy conditions. Houser finished the game completing 18 of 29 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 27 yards and a touchdown.

Michigan State falls to 2-4 on the season and 0-3 in Big Ten play. The Spartans have lost four straight games.

The Spartans return to the field next week in a home rivalry game against Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET next week.

LSJ columnist expects Katin Houser to start vs. Rutgers

It sounds like Michigan State will go with Katin Houser as the starting quarterback on Saturday

Graham Couch normally has a good read on the Michigan State football program and he believes the Spartans will be switching things up at quarterback.

Couch — who writes for the Lansing State Journal — published his determining factors and prediction for the Michigan State-Rutgers matchup on Thursday. As part of that article, he wrote that he expects freshman Katin Houser to take over as the starting quarterback and replace Noah Kim.

The switch from Kim to Houser is expected by many after Kim’s recent struggles. Head coach Harlon Barnett also was non-committal to Kim remaining as the starter earlier this week — which generally indicates a change is coming.

Should Houser get the start, it will be the first of his career. Houser has appeared in four games this year in relief of Kim.

Kickoff between the Spartans and Scarlet Knights is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET on Saturday. This game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
