MSU Basketball included in CBS Sports’ 2024-25 preseason rankings

See where Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has the Spartans in his updated preseason rankings

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports has the Spartans as one of his top 26 teams in the country heading into next season.

Parrish released an updated batch of preseason rankings on Saturday, which included the Spartans. Michigan State came in as his final ranked team at No. 26.

Here’s a bit of what Parrish had to say about Michigan State:

his ranking is based on Tom Izzo’s Spartans returning five of the top eight scorers – specifically Jaden Akins, Tre Holloman, Xavier Booker, Jeremy Fears and Carson Cooper – from a team that secured a No. 9 seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

MSU Hoops left off On3’s updated ‘Way-Too-Early’ rankings for next season

Michigan State basketball is not included in On3’s updated “way-too-early” rankings for next year

James Fletcher III of On3 doesn’t believe Michigan State is a top 25 team entering the thick of the offseason.

The transfer portal has closed and most of the teams across college basketball have finalized their rosters for the 2024-25 season. There will be some additions still for a few, but for the most part the rosters are set.

So how does Michigan State stack up with the rest of the country? Well, Fletcher doesn’t have them in his new “Way-Too-Early” rankings for next season.

Only a few Big Ten teams made his list: UCLA at No. 16, Purdue at No. 18, Indiana at No. 21 and USC at No. 23.

MSU listed in top 10 of CBS Sports’ preseason 2023-24 college basketball rankings

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports is high on the Spartans for next year, but not as much as some other media outlets

Gary Parrish of CBS Sports is high on the Spartans for next year, but not as much as some other media outlets.

Parrish released an updated batch of preseason rankings for the 2023-24 season earlier this month, and to no surprise, Michigan State was near the top. However, he has Michigan State at No. 5 — which comes in three spots behind Purdue at No. 2. Parrish also has Kansas (No.1), Duke (No. 3) and Florida Atlantic (No. 4) ahead of the Spartans in his rankings.

Michigan State and Purdue were two of only three Big Ten teams to make Parrish’s rankings, with Illinois being the third team at No. 23.

The Spartans have been a regular highly ranked team in the preseason rankings I’ve seen in the past month. Most I’ve come across have Michigan State sitting at No. 3 behind only Kansas and Duke so for Parrish to have the Spartans a few spots lower is somewhat surprising.

Below is a breakdown of the complete top 25 rankings from Parrish:

MSU basketball lands inside top 5 of updated 247Sports’ preseason 2023-24 rankings

Michigan State basketball continues to be a highly ranked team in next year’s early preseason rankings

Michigan State basketball continues to be a highly ranked team in next year’s early preseason rankings.

Like many of his peers, Kevin Flaherty of 247Sports is high on Michigan State heading into the 2023-24 season. He released an updated batch of 2023-24 preseason rankings a few days ago, and he has the Spartans in his top five. Michigan State came in at No. 3 in 247Sports’ poll, behind only Kansas (No. 1) and Duke (No. 2).

Only two other teams from the Big Ten were found in Flaherty’s rankings: Purdue at No. 5 and Maryland at No. 25.

The Spartans, Jayhawks and Blue Devils appear to be the consensus top three in the nation heading into next year based on numerous polls I’ve recently came across. Purdue and Marquette are also common teams in the top five.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish has MSU outside top 10 in ‘never-too-early’ rankings for 2023-24

Gary Parrish of CBS isn’t as high on the Spartans compared to others in his field of work

Gary Parrish of CBS isn’t as high on the Spartans compared to others in his field of work.

Michigan State has been a common top 10 team in the way-too-early rankings released for the 2023-24 season this week. However, Parrish doesn’t have them that high. He has the Spartans just outside the top 10 at No. 11.

Of the Big Ten, Parrish has the Spartans as his second-highest team behind only Purdue at No. 2. No other Big Ten teams were in his rankings.

Spartans listed in top 5 of Jeff Goodman’s preseason 2023-24 college basketball rankings

Jeff Goodman of Stadium is extremely high on the Spartans entering next year

Jeff Goodman of Stadium is extremely high on the Spartans entering next season.

Michigan State will enter next season listed in the preseason top 25 polls, but where do the experts see the Spartans exactly landing? Goodman has the Spartans near the top at No. 3. He has Michigan State behind only No. 1 Marquette and No. 2 Duke.

Here’s what Goodman had to say about Michigan State:

“Tom Izzo and the Spartans could be loaded if Tyson Walker and Malik Hall opt to return for another year. Izzo brings back AJ Hoggard, Jaden Akins, Jaxon Kohler and Mady Sissoko, and a talented freshman class led by skilled forward Xavier Booker and point guard Jeremy Fears.”

Michigan State is one of only three Big Ten teams listed in Goodman’s preseason rankings. The other two are Purdue (No. 5) and Maryland (No. 21).

Stewart Mandel of The Athletic is high on Michigan State football entering the 2022 season.

Mandel released an updated batch of his early top 25 rankings on Friday, and it saw the Spartans landing in the top 10. He has Michigan State at No. 8 — one spot ahead of rival Michigan at No. 9.

Mandel previously had Michigan State at No. 10 in his first batch of rankings, but gave the Spartans a boost up after some recent transfer additions. Here’s a bit of what he had to say about Michigan State:

“A year after plucking star running back Kenneth Walker from Wake Forest, Mel Tucker landed Colorado’s Jarek Broussard, the Pac-12’s 2020 Offensive Player of the Year who ran for 301 yards in a game against Arizona.”
