It was another frustrating week for the Spartans on the hardwood.

Michigan State looked poised for a big-time victory over Rutgers on Saturday but as we’ve seen a lot lately, they couldn’t finish the game strong enough to earn the win. It was yet another blown opportunity for the Spartans and they’ll again be in a must-win situation against Maryland on Tuesday.

Will Michigan State win consecutive games again this year? It’ll probably happen but it didn’t this week.

It was another up-and-down week for Michigan State, who picked up a much-needed win over Iowa on Thursday but followed it up with an embarrassing performance at Purdue in a blowout loss. The Spartans have dropped four of their last six games and haven’t won consecutive games in over three weeks.

While Michigan State fans are frustrated with the recent stretch of play, it could be a lot worse — just ask Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan who all find themselves near the bottom of the league. On the flip side, Northwestern, Indiana and Illinois have ascended in our weekly power rankings after strong play as of late.

The Spartans went 1-2 in their three games this week, which included a one-point loss to the league’s top team Purdue. The lone win over Rutgers was big for their NCAA Tournament resume but it still feels like Michigan State left something on the table as we move forward to another week of conference play.

It was a great week of basketball for Michigan State.

Michigan State was able to pick up a pair of wins, with a notable win over rival Michigan on Saturday. You could argue the competition wasn’t highly-quality but a 2-0 week in this league is impressive regardless of who you’re playing.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, there was madness with Purdue finally losing their first game, Iowa pulling off a miracle comeback and Illinois finally picking up their first conference win. So how do all of this week’s results shake up our power rankings?

It was another quiet week for many across the Big Ten, but not everyone was fortunate enough to pick up victories.

The Spartans were like most of the league, taking care of business against a lower-tier team, but Iowa couldn’t say the same thing. The Hawkeyes were upset by Eastern Illinois as more than 30-point favorites. Michigan also dropped another close game against a quality team. This time it was North Carolina.
