Spartans listed in bottom half of Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings

Michigan State football is listed in the bottom half of the league in Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings

Michigan State football is listed in the bottom half of the league in Athlon Sports’ Big Ten Preseason Power Rankings.

Steven Lassan of Athlon Sports has put together a batch of preseason power rankings for the new 18-team Big Ten and he’s not particularly high on the Spartans. But also isn’t burying Michigan State either.

Lassan has Michigan State at No. 13 in the league, which is one sport behind Minnesota and one spot ahead of UCLA. Here’s a bit of what Lassan had to say about the Spartans:

“New coach Jonathan Smith is one of the offseason’s top hires, but the Spartans bring back only nine starters off a team that went 4-8 last year. If Smith is to exceed expectations in ’24, Oregon State transfer quarterback Aidan Chiles has to deliver a breakout year, while an offensive line that returns only one starter needs to quickly fall into place.”

MSU Hoops listed near bottom of league in 247Sports’ ‘way-too-early’ power rankings

This past season was disappointing for the Spartans, and Isaac Trotter of 247Sports believes the same is in store for next year too

This past season was disappointing for the Spartans, and Isaac Trotter of 247Sports believes the same is in store for next year too.

Trotter put together a “way-too-early” batch of Big Ten basketball power rankings, and he is not particularly high on Michigan State in 2024-25. He has the Spartans listed at No. 11 in the 18-team Big Ten power rankings.

Here’s a bit of what he had to say about the Spartans:

Being bullish on Michigan State requires a little faith. With AJ Hoggard and Tyson Walker exiting, can Akins finally emerge as a go-to guard? Will Fears be fully recovered from getting, uh, shot?!? Is Xavier Booker out of Tom Izzo’s doghouse once and for all?

Michigan State has been considered by many as a fringe top 25 team nationally following the spring transfer portal window so it’s pretty shocking to see Trotter have the Spartans in the bottom half of their own league. It’s certainly a possibility for Michigan State but I personally was surprised to see the Spartans this low after a pair of portal additions this offseason.

It doesn’t get much worse than what Michigan State basketball did this week.

With a pair of losses this week, Michigan State’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament took a hit but how did it affect our power rankings position?

So how does the Spartans’ strong week impact their spot in our weekly Big Ten power rankings?

Michigan State basketball had a pretty darn good week.

The Spartans avoided an upset bid from Minnesota earlier in the week and finally picked up its first road win of the season on Sunday over Maryland to close out the week. Michigan State wasn’t at its best in either game but still found a way to win, which is really promising for the Spartans.
