Michigan State hockey was unable to hold on late to complete the sweep of Penn State on Saturday.

The Spartans gave up a powerplay goal in the final minutes of the third period, which resulted in the game heading to overtime. After five scoreless minutes in overtime, Penn State would come out victorious in the shootout. The final score was officially 2-2 with both teams earning a tie but Penn State received the extra point in Big Ten standings from the shootout victory.

Michigan State beat Penn State on Friday night and will leave Happy Valley with four of the six conference points this weekend. Michigan State is now 18-2-2 overall and still hasn’t lost a game in regulation or overtime since early December.

Next up for the Spartans is a home-and-home series with rival Michigan next weekend. Michigan State will first head to Ann Arbor on Friday, before hosting the Wolverines on Saturday at Munn Ice Arena.

Michigan State overcame an early deficit in the series opener on Friday to beat the Nittany Lions, 6-4. The Spartans were led by Isaac Howard who scored four goals in the victory.

Michigan State is 18-2-1 with the win over Penn State on Friday. The Nittany Lions are 8-10-1 on the year following the loss.

Michigan State hockey heads out east this weekend for a challenging two-game road series at conference rival Penn State.

The Spartans are riding high right now, currently on a five-game winning streak. Michigan State is 17-2-1 overall and is again No. 1 in the country this week.

Penn State is near the bottom of the Big Ten entering this series, holding a 8-9-1 record on the year. The Nittany Lions, however, are coming off a victory over Notre Dame in its last outing.

This will be the first of four meetings between the Spartans and Nittany Lions this year. These two teams will faceoff again on Saturday, and then play a two-game series at Michigan State in February.
